GENERAL BURNSIDE. ‘The only communication received from General Burnside since bis recent great victory is # brief report to Gen. McClellan, (brought by Mr. Van Brant, Com. Goldsborough’s secretary ,) which !s, {in substance, we hear, similar to the despatches from the naval portion of the expedition that we print to-day ARRESTED. Col. J. C. McConnell, of the 34 Maryland regi- ment, has been ordered under arrest by Brigadier General Cooper, on charges of fraud in the forma- tion of his regiment, and is now confined to the Mmits of bis quarters, awaiting court martial. THE SECRETARY OF WAR Secretary Stanton, we are glad to see, is again at his post inthe Department, the country will sejoice to know. —————-_>+e-—_ _ - Ovr Too Soon. —Early yesterday morning the Intelligencer office was delivered of a joke,—a ‘wee, sickly thing undoubtedly, but its best. it is well enough understood in Washington by this time that on the arrival of ‘‘a little stran- get” of that sort at that office, each and every member of the Intelligencer corps feels Privileged to avail bimself of the honorable seclusion of Wirty days due to maternity, and incontinently goes to bed. It is therefore with the extremest apprebension that their friends find them up and out to-day and again attempting to be funny. As Mr. Toots says of Mrs. T. when in a similar interesting situation, they forget the medical man altogetuer. {> Our neighbors of the Intelligencer plume themselves quite undeservedly, we regret to say, upon furnishing the Star with “ news’’ matter. Asan authority of the past—as to what trans- pired in the carboniferous period, the order of procession into the ark, and kindred matters—we would sooner consult the Intelligencer than any other paper printed; but its “‘ news” columns, we venture to say, were never invaded by the need- Jest editorial scissors ‘Tur Vers Croz * Victory.”’—The news from Vera Cruz shows that the battle that was reported (via San Francisco) near Vera Cruz on the 26th of January, wasall moonshine. She reports the rout of the rebels as complete. Three thousand prisoners were captured. All thelr gunboats were burnt or captured except two, which escaped by the canal. ‘The Federal killed numbers forty-two; wounded, about l40. The rebel killed numbers about thirty, end their wounded less than 100. An advance from Hatteras took place on Wed- nesday morning. The expedition consisted of about sixty vessels. The fieet anchored off Stumpy Point on that night, and the next day proceeded to the entrance to Croatan Sound. After a reconnoissance the attack was commenced on Friday morning, the Underwriter leading thecolumn. The rebel fleet was attacked nnd dispersed In half an hour by a Portion of the navy, while theremainder attacked the land batteries. The fight continued until dark. During the night 10,000 men were landed, and on Saturday morning 7,000 were advanced. A masked battery of three guns was soon discov- ered by the skirmishers, and was attacked in front and on both danks. The 2ist, 25th, and 27th Massachusetts, and 9th and 5ist New York, and 10tt Connecticut were particularly engaged. ‘The 25th Massachusetts and 10th Connecticut suffered the most severely. The fignt lasted only two or three hours, when the battery was abandoned. Our troops pursued, and surrounding the rebel camps, took nearly the whole command prisoners. O. Jennings Wise was wounded, and was shot twice while endeav- oring to ereape in a boat. Col. Russell, of the 10th Connecticut, was killed at the head of his regiment. Lt. Col. Vigier De Montell, of the De Epineuil “ouaves, whose services were vol- untary, was also killed. No other officers were killed above the rank of Meutenant. Our total loss of killed and wounded Is less than two hun- dred, and the number of killed only {s less than fifty We took between 2,000 and 3.000 prisoners. They were about being sent to New York by the 8. R. Spaulding and other steamers. Among them are about twelve or fifteen Colonels, Lieut. Colonels and Majors On Sunday afternoon a fleet of fifteen gunboats started for Elizabeth City. The place was shelled and having been evacuated and partially burnt by the troops, was eccupied. All the Rebel fleet was sunk or burnt except two, the Roanoke and Beaufort, which escaped up the canal. The Sea Bird, which was the flag ship of Commodore Lynch, was run down and boarded, and the Commodore escaped to the shore by swimming The news from El zabeth City arrived at Ro- anoke Island on Monday evening, and the Stars and Stripes left on Tuesday morning. She struck on the bar et Hatteras on Tuesdry night but started again in the morning and arrived here at about noon to-day. The Stars and Stripes brings a bearer of des- patches from General Burnside and Commodore Goldsborough. All take a cargo of ammunition, and will return immediately Gov. Wise was at Nagg’s Head, and succeeded in escaping to Norfolk The rebels made no fight after being driven fi their intrenchments, which was done by Hawk- kins’ Zouaves and the 2ist Massachusetts. Young Wise resisted the storming part.es until] he was wounded, when he was carried off, and his com. mand retreated with the others to the upper end of the island, where they laid down their arms. Elizabeth City was about half burnt by the rebel soldiers. The people sent off a deputation to Com. Goldsborough asking him to send a force to assist in extinguishing the flames. Edenton was taken possession of on Wednes- day by Com. Golsborough, no opposition being offered. Norfolk and Richmond papers attribute the !oss of Roanoke Island to the blundering inefliciency of their navy. They persist in asserting that nearly one thousand federals were killed. They charge some Roanoke Island farmer with having deserted and piloted the Yankees to the only point where they could effect a landing, the island be- ing flanked on all sides by an extensive marsh. Dispatches from Memphis to Norfolk admit that the Federal flag was cheered on the Tennessee river by the people, and adtert that the Federals neither seized or destroyed any private property, not even cotton. Gov. Letcher has issued an order for the forma- tion of home guards for Norfolk, Petersburg, and Richmond. Messrs. Ames and Fish r-turn to Baltimore, the rebels refusing to receive them. Four hundred released Federal prisoners will reach Old Point Friday or Saturday. | Yote.—By the bearer of dispatches from Co:n- modore Goldsborough, we learn that the rebels failed to get O. Jennings Wise off, and he was made a prisoner, and died of his wounds ere the Stars and Stripes sailed —Ep. Star } OFFICIAL DISPATCHES. U.S. Fiac Steamer PaitapEtputa, Of Roanoke Isiand, Feb. 9, 1862 Hon. Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy: Sra: Roanoke Island is ours. Its military au- thorities struck to us yesterday. Their means of defence were truly formidable, and they were used with a determination worthy of a better cause. They consisted of the elaborately con- structed works, mounting, together, twenty-two heavy guns, three of them being 100-pounder rifles; four other batteries mounting together twenty guns, a large portion of them being also of large calibre, and some of them rifled; eight steamers, mounting two guns each, and each having arified gun with the diameter of u 32- pounder; a prolonged obstruction of sunken vet- sels and piles to thwart our advance; and, alto- gether, a body of men numbering scarcely less than five thousand, of whom three thousand are now prisoners. The fighting commenced ou the morning of the 7th inst. at about 11 o’clock, and was continued until dark. The following morning it was re- newed at an early hour, and it lasted until well in the afternoon, when bya bold charge of our arms, the rebel flag was made to succumb, and our own was hoisted everywhere on the island in its place. . No attack could have been more completel; successful, and it wae carried out precisely in ac- cordance with the arrangements made before the exped'tion left Hatteras Iniet. A detailed account of the operations of the naval branch of the expedition will be forward- ed to the Department hereafter. I beg to submit, herewith, acopy of the gen- eral order issued to-day to be read on the quarter- deck of each vessel belonging to that branch of the expedition. L. M. Gideon Welles, Secrstary of the Navy: Sin: Just as I closed my dispatch to you of yesterday, I received reliable information that the rebel steamers which escaped from here had gone to Elizabeth City, and therefore I immedi- ately ordered Com’r Rowan to take thirteen of our steamers under his command and go in pursuit of them; and also, if practicable, to execute an- other important service, viz: the destruction, up the North river, of a link of the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal. He dashed off with a whole heart at his work, and the way he has already ac- complished the first part of it, his own prelimi- nary report (a copy of which I have the honor herewith to enclose) will inform you. I have decided to send the Stars and Stripes off to Hampton Roads to-morrow morning to bring my ammunition from there without delay.
