THE E\ ENING STAR. AFFAIRS I\ GEORGETOWN Correspondence of The Star. Groxextown, D C.. Jan. 17, 1862. ‘There wes a meeting of our City Councils last evening, but there wes nots quorum present in the Board 6f Aldermen Several messages, in writing. were received from the Mayor—emong them one insenly, to the reso- lution passed by the boards on the 4th instant, Inquiring of him whether the contract with the Gea Company bas been complied with by them, and whether it would be expedient to extinguish the lightseach night at 12 o'clock. Jn regard to the first branch of the inquiry th yor replies ‘that “it may be seid that there bas been no just cause of complaint against the company, so far their com pilance with the contract is concerned. In reply to the second branch he states severa! alternative propositions for the action of the boards; and, !n conclusion, states the troubles in relation to gas have originated from the great error which was committed in the outset. The Corporation should at that time have taken the wheie business into its own bands. The only ‘way to remedy extortion wovld be for the corpo- ration and the citizens to withhold mrg ri eaphone from the company. For the present, they shou abe compelled to Tarnist the corporation with gas ‘Bt as low rates as may exist in any other town or @ity in the United States. He (the Mayor) also SBgges's some action by the boards, in view of the complaints made by citizens as to theit gas Dills, that some better regulation be made for as- certalning the quantity consumed by them ia each ease. One submitting a resolution for the considera tion of the board instructing the Mayor and the committee before Congress to urge upon them the wal appropriation for lighting Bridgeand High streets, on account of the peculiar necessity for light at this time, because of the passage of army ‘wagons through the streets at night, and for other reasons. One in reply to the resolution of inquiry passed by the board on the 3d instant, as to whether the ‘water bydrants shall be ebandoned on account cf the expense of keeping them in repair. The Mayor enters fully into the matter, and comes to the conclusion that it would not be good policy to abandon the hydrants, as they are worth many times more than the expense which attends their r iv All of these messages were sppropriately re- ferred The annual statement of the Clerk; the quarterly accounts of the Superintendent of the Poor House; zecount of John Williams, for cleaning the tehhouse; 2 communication from the Market + Master, recommending the propriety of placing » ‘water plug at the bead of the market bouse; a Ppeti:ion of George L. Sherwood, G. W_ Hilleary and W. H. Robertson, asking the Boards to settle a dispute between them and Justice Reaver in reference to licenses for hackstering; and Justice ~ se Reaver’s account for fees, were all read and appro- ly ted. The committee were, on motion, dis- cues tows further consideration of the petition of Amandus Baumbeck, praying for remission of a 2 imposed upon him for a nuisance In his yard. The resolution submitted by the Mayor, as above stated, instructing the committee before Congress in reference to the lights on Bridge and High streets, was passed: and also a resolution Instructing the Mayor and the committee before Congress to use their best exertions to serure the repeal or suspension of the law of Congress which prevents the @ of Corporation and bank notes of denominations less than five deliars A resolution authorizing the Clerk of the Cor- Poration to piv the interest on the water stock ou vf the general fund, the amount so paid to be re Placed to the credit of the general fund #0 soou a3 Mater texes are collected came up, when Mr. Tenney said the committee before Congress bad been tastructed to urge that body to so amend the charter es to endow the corporation with power to collect the water-tax. which power we did not iene He hoped the committee would to a matter of so much importance. The resolution was passed. He would raise a school fund bya tax on property, and allow ail white male citizens to vote withont ction or payment of any tex Mr. Bangs thought instructions of this kind to the committee were very inopportune at this time, as that committee bad as much or more business eon hand then they could Provably get through with this session, and the time of Congress abso was fully engrossed with important measures pending before that hody. The levying of a poli- tex gave s great impetus to the cnase of education im the town, which nothing el<e ever did Mr. Tenney did not think the dollar poll-tax any tothe interest in the pubilc schools, end his great onjection to it was that it was unequal tex.
