OUT AGAIN We are gratified in being able to say that this forenoon Major General McClellan was out and about again, in bis carriage. RELEASED ON PAROLE. Lawrence Sangston, a member of the late Maryland Legislature, bas been released from Fort Warren on parole for a period of thirty days, and arrived In Baltimore on Saturday morning A similar privilege has been extended to another member, Dr. J. Hanson Thomas, but it is not known whether the parole was accepted. AN ENGAGEMENT YESTERDAY Last evening dispatches were received at head- quarters here, stating that in thecourse of the fore- noon the secesh Genera! Jackson, with a force be- leved to number between six and seven thousand, commenced shelling the town of Hancock, Md., from a point on the opposite side of the Potomac. He banged away throughout the day, doing no damage whatever, either to the town or General Lander’s force, that holds the Maryland bank of the river at that point. Col Lander’s artillery returned Jackson's fire, and a continual cannon- eding was kept up between them until nightfall. Gen Lander bad not last night ascertained and reported bere whether his guns had damaged the enemy. We have reason to believe that in the course of yesterday afternoon and the night reinforcements reached General Lander sufficient to make bis immediate cominand at that point quite a match for any number of troops that Jackson can possibly bring Lv‘o the teld Vp to noon to-day, nothing farther than we state above had reached Washington concerning the affair; leaving the inference that in the course of the night Jackson bad withdrawn back from the river THE LAST SENSATION STORY The Northern papers are agog witb a sensation story saying that 9 femaie member of the fam!ly of a distinguished offictal in this city has been detected in trensonable correspondence with reb- els, conveying to them important official infor- mation obtained from her father, &c Now, we have to say that neither the military nor civil authorities bere know anything what- ever of this effair, and that mo distinguished offcer has been arrested in any such connection, as is being alleged sround the city to-day. The story is evidently 2 sensation rcorback from be- ginning to end. P. 3 —So rife is this aveurd lie over the city, 8s thet we may not improperly mention that the officer alluded to is Brigadier General Lorenzo Thomas, Adjutant General U.S.A, who, insted of being in arrest, &c., is to-day as busy as ever in the discharge of bis duties. The roorback looks very like the creation of some one of General Fre- mont’s w flati, all of whom hold that not to bean admirer of their idol, 1s proof positive of seces- sion proclivities. That Gen. Thomas should be made the subject of such a ‘‘whopper,”’ goes far to illustrate the fact that the two all-pervading diseases of the popular mind, just now, are lying and credulity. SCLDIER’S CLOTHES. A correspondent complains bitterly because, as be alleges, one of the mounted military patrols of the city took recently from a colored man an army overcoat, which, within the writer's knowl- ledge, had been honestly purchased by the wear- er. He addsthat the Government last winter con- demned and sold such clothing here, and that much of it remains in the bands of dealers in such goods In explanation, we have tosay that the nul- sance of robbing careless soldiers of their clothes and buying them o” them when at times inebri- ated, is such as to require prompt abatement The corresponding nuisance of citizens wearing military clothes leads to annoying confasion and other evils which should be stopped. ‘To that end none are permitted to wear the inilitary dress except those In all things under military rules and regu- jations. When parties dressed as soldiers claim exemption from obedience to orders because they ere not soldiers, they are therefore made at once to doff the soldier’s habiliments; and when it is possible that their military habiliments may have been stolen or improperly obtained from soldiers, the claimant to them is made to establish his right to the property ere they sre returned to him Our correspondent is wholly in error in his in- Sinuation that this rule is applied to colored Persons in soldier’s ciothes only. It is 8pplied to all not of the military service who wear them; to Persons in officer's uniforms, as well as those in Privates clothes. If ovr correspondent will take the trouble to represent (with proper proof) to the military au- thorities the facts of this particular case, as he writes them to us, his worthy colored employee ‘will doubtless get back his coat instantly; with an order to lay it aside until the necessity for refusing to permit any other than soldiers to ‘wear such clothes here, ceases to exist. COL D'UTASSY AND THE GARIBALDI GUARD. Editor Star: A friend facetiously observed a few evenings since thst, unless Gen. Blenker’s division was provided with winter quarters, the qutrringe of the soldiers would be intense, (in ) pes of this, the seeming neglect on the part of the Goverament is bat = sovurence that the rumored advance of the division is founded on truth. Brigade ond regimental drills, sham bat- thes, long marches in full military equipment, po oe oa t rigid discipline, are ail significant It Is understood that Colonel D’Utassy has been nominated a Brigadier General of this division. New Yorkers earnestly desire this confirmation Col. D'Utassy is entitled to the position by date of commission, by long military service, and the — displayed by his presenteommand. To a casi bserver the Colonel would seem of a mer. curial temperament, of ligbt and dashing man- ner; but under this exterior lies a stout rt, calm bead, and an iron will, which makes obe. dient to bis word, or look, eleven distinct nation. alities. Theat General Blenker appreciates these Qualities we are assured; for on a late occasion, after 2 brigade drill and sham battle, as the brig- the headquarters the General ordered to summon Colonel D’U! tobis Presence, and complimented him highly on the Perfection of his men. ‘When the Garibaldi Guard first joined the divi- sion, an unfortunate contre’em materially affect. ed the public mind in its disfavor—a conspiracy among the which resulted in the resigna- parce, to the regiment Tras ein byt » as aa a favor of the ‘that be would restore seven in sub. ve them a. ‘with ten recruits, and himself took piace im the ranks. Destruction of the Therter and ether Valua- bie Buildings From the Richmond W hig of Friday we make up the follewing account of the great conflagra- tion in that city on the morning of the 2d inst., destroying the Theater, Marshall Hotel, ard other property: The fire broke out in the Theater about 4 o’clock a.m , and before the bells were rung the finmes burst out through the windows, envelop- ing the whole boliting The manager of the theater, Professor J Hewitt and Mr. E Ogden, a member of the dramatic coupany. oc- ecuplied a room in the front part of the building, and were sroused from their slumber by the ex- plosien of muskets in the property room, and the efforts of Lieut. Cone, of the night watch, to break open the front gallery door. They selzed their clothes and ran into the street to escape suf- focation. After dressing hastily, they returned to the apartment to save some of their valuable effects, and while in this effort, which ‘was only partially successful, Prof. Hewitt burnt his right hand badly, and had bis hair and mous- tache singed. A box containing several hundred dollars, and sundry account books, papers, etc , were saved; but, with this exception, the contents of the room were necessarily abandoned to the devouring fire. The loss sustained by Prof. Hewitt cannot be calculated by dollars andcents. Ozatorios, piays, rones, etc., of his composition, the production of a lifetime, together with the library and manu- scripts of the establishment, which cannot be replaced, were all destroyed. Behind the proce- nium were the costly wardrobes, furniture, sce- nery and general appointments, valued at thou- sands: of dollars, and in various parts of the bu'lding was the less valuable but rare collection of portraits of professional celebrities and repre- sentations of dramatic scenes. Mucb of this property formerly belonged to Messrs. Kunkel & Co., but had passed into the possession of Mrs. E. Mavill, theowner of the building Themembers of the orchestra lost all their instruments, inclu- ding a base viol, three violins, two French horns, valued, collectively, at$300. Prof. Loebman, the leader, lost a large collection of music, the accu- mulation of years, estimated to be worth #400 All of the company and attaches suffered more or less by the dissster; but Miss Jeannie Taylor sus- tained the most serious loss, her wardrobe, jew- elry, &c., being valued at $1,200 Phe theater belonged to Mrs. Elizabeth Magill, having been purchased by her, at public auction, on the 10th of May, 1455. The building was in- sured to the amount of $25,000, In the following offices: Richmond Fire Association, $6,000; Albe- marle, $5,000; Jefferson, $5,000; Lynchburg Hose, $5,000; and Merchants’, $4,000. “The contents of the building, which, with the exceptions men- tioned, were all destroyed, were uninsured. The loss is estimated at the round sum of $25,000. but this probably embraces the extrinsic value of some of the property. The Marshall Hotel caught from the theater, and was badly burned, besides seriously injured by the floods of water poured in. A military button fectu.y was crushed by the falling walls of the theater, and other bulldings in the vicinity were either destroyed of damaged to a great ex- tent, the whote amounting to several thousand dollars The Whig says: _ “The fire was undoubtedly the work of a mali- clous incendiary. Various speculations are afloat, but there is no clue, we believe, to the perpetrator. We have heard {t stated that the fire was predicted a week ago. The proprietress lias already, we learn, resolved to rebuild the theater on an im- proved plan.” NOTICE.
