[From All the ¥: ound ) Think only of the common hackneyed ex- pressions which pass so lightly between the lips when speaking of a great le. We talkvex- ultingly, and with a certain fire, of ‘a mag- nificent c! ety ape rs BP das few will think of the hideous particulars these two airy words stand for. The “splendid ebarge”’ is a headlong rush of men on strong horses, to their fullest » Tidin; ther, being the enemy's line way.’’ It does not fill in th #0 effectively, we must thi: rat of an ordi- nary individual run down in the public street by s horseman moving at an easy pace. The result is, usually, fracture and violent contu- sion. We may st then the tones of the ture by setting this Dieuen at full gallop, and joining to him a company ef other flying horsemen. How will it then be with the un- happy pedestrian? So when the “splendid chargs”’ haa d its work, and passed by, there will be found a sight very mach like the seene of a frightful railway accident. There will be the full complement of backs broken in two; of arms tw vm 9 of men impaled upon their own bayonets; of legs smashed up like bits of firewood; of heads sliced open like ap- les; of other heads crunched into soft jelly by mses hoofs of horses; of faces tram’ led out of all likeness to anything human. This is what skulks behind “ a splendid charg This is what follows, as a matter of course, when “our fellows rode at them in style,"’ and “cut them up famously.” in, how often does the commander, wri- ting home in his official dispatchee, dwell par- ticularly on the gallant conduct of Capt. Smith, who. finding the enemy were “annoying our right a little, got bis gun into ition, and ef- fectually held them in check.”’ Both expres- sions are fair drawing-room phrases, to be mentioned cheerfully by ladies’ lips. It is, as it were, a few flies buzzing about ‘‘our right wing,”” teasing and fretting ‘our’ men. And ] yet, properly translated, it signifies this : that stray men of thatright wing are now and then lea ing with a convulsive start into the air, as ipie bullet flies with ‘p sting through their hearts; that stray men, suddenly struck, are rolling on the ground; that a man, here and th is dropping down quite suddenly with a shriek, his firelock tumbling from his band. In short, that there is a series of vio- lent death scenes being cnacted up and down the long line. : Then come thi yenet wounds, jagged, perplexing and painful. Now has it been thrust violently through the chest and lungs and out at the back, and is as violently with- drawn with a peculiar twist, wheace comes suppuration, painful gasping for breath, and all manner of horrid accompaniments. Now it has impaled the intestines, producing complication. Now it has pierced the ‘o P’ comes in, too, for its share ofinjury. A builet skims through the body, smashes the lower vertebra of the column, makes itsescape on the other side. The bones come away in little pieces. The new Minie ball has, we are told, the usefal property of shivering the bone into numberless paar and fragments. The con- ical point acts as a , and thé scattering of the splinters adds much to the inflamma- tion. the catalogue runs on. The real h of war are played out to the utmost on the hospital pallet when the the- atrical business is all over. Arrexrr to Brow cr 4 Train wits 4 Keo or Powper.—A correspondent of the Missouri Democrat writes from Rolla, Aug. 28: An at- tempt was made this afternoon to blow up the train due here at 4.50. The train had reached 8 point eight miles from here and two miles be- yond Dilton, when a loud explosion was heard, which was sup) by the passengers to be im of the pebbles thrown against it. The engineer, Benjamin Smith, was thrown off his seat by the concussion, and had his wrist injured slightly by an iron screw driven upwards from the floor of the engine. The powder was contained in a commsn nail keg, buried between the rails, and it is sap) that a fuse extended from it tothe track escape of the passengers is consid- ered providential, as there is no question that the dastardly scoundrels who perpetrated the act intended to effect 2 wholesale laughter of allon board. The train moved back to the soene of the explosion, when it was ascertained from a woman that eight men were seen by her on thespota half hour or so previous. The rebels could be heard talking, by some of the in the bushes, and after the train tel a was was seen to come out trom his biding place and take a survey of his nefarious work. The blackened stones brought along by the passengers are nearly two feet long. Aug. 27.—A company of cavalry unde: Capt. MoFali was sent down to reconnoiter last night. They found several rails ripped from the track in a deep cut near Jamestown station. Three suspicious-looking characters were seen on the track in the borhood, and were fired at. Nothing further was heard from them than the exclamation from of the party, borne on the midzight air, “I’m shot!” Avrains at Manassas.—Se De Kay, the war correspoudent of the Louisville Courier (secesh) writes from Manassas August 23d: in possession Bas our desrly bought ition; our forces occu, at present, pg oper wren lines than = the 2ist oi July. Doesticks, who claims to be an Ellsworth Zouave, thus narrates the experience of his regiment after receiving their uniforms from the Military Board : The uniforms sent trom New York were the trashiest things possible; they wouldn’t stand any pressure—they wouldn’t stand any pres- sure. A gentle wind would blow a man’s coat fhalre di i would tear out into long seconds he would look lik ith th I set for “ni fellow, but sail in and fight on your own hook.’’ No man has had a whole suit of clothes for two months. gone on guard dressed only in overcoat and mus- ket, and we’ve done scout duty in the easy and elegant attire of a revolver and one pair of shoes to threemen. When we’ve wanted to dress extra fine for Sunday service, we'd pele ish our musket and tie a red on etch leg. The chaplain, for decency’s sake—when he reaches—stands in an empty perk barrel to bide his legs. Tealled onthe Colonel yesterday, dressed only in a bayonet; and that ponsiderate officer admired my airy costume much, buf said I’d better kill a few seceshers, and when I bagged one of my own size I might help myself to his breeches. When our whole company lately applied to him for clothes, he said he hadn’t got any for us, but he served out fifteen rounds of ball cartridges to each, and gave us leave of absence for two days, and told us to bury all the seceshers we killed, so as not to lumveér u the country. Most of the fellows got suits of clothes, and Bob Brown was so uncom- monly particular that he didn’t suit himself till be killed five fellows. With -my usual luck, 1 couldn’t find a fellow my size—they were ali too short or too le When at last I did find fellow five feet nine, and had aim on him, he raised his head and disclosed the un- welcome fact that it was one of our own geants. Just my luck—he had on a lovely suit of gray which would have fitted me to a hair, and if I'd been half a second quicker on the trigger I could have had it, but I couldn’t de- cently shoot after I’d seen hisface. However, I gota full suit of blue cloth, and Bob Brown is on the lookout to help me to better my con- dition. He wants to find a fellow five feet nine, rather slim in the waist, and with a new and well fitting suit; army blue preferred. ——~2+e-_______ A Tavs or a Suirt.—One of the traitors or spies arrested in Harrisburg, Pa., a few days ago, on his way from ginia to New York, wus & man named W. J. Kelly. He and his two comrades were all thoroughly searched, and evidence was found on each to prove that they were properly arrested. Mr. Kelly’s turn was the last one, and was much the most interesting. He had taken off all his clothes but hirt, but nothing contraband or trea- had been found on him. He stood thus before the Mayor and an examining offi- cer, and, under the circumstances, the position was & very embarrassing one, for, to say noth- ing of ordinary modesty, which may even exist among the rebels, the owner of that shi that it was lined with treason. T that garment would reveal his treason, and probably make his life forfeit. The moment of suspense, during which Mr. Selly betore his curious captors must have be: rather agonizing one. when the officer remarked s01 it off. trembled and turned pale, and his bare knees shook and knocked together. He could not endure the shock to his modesty; he called for water; he was on the point of fainting. But the officers were inexorable. The shirt came off, and the treason as well as the person of Mr. Kelly was laid bare. The shirt was a marvel of ingenious needle-work, having various well-concealed kets, in which were found numerous letters rom the South; some from men in the rebel army to their friends in Baltimore; others to men in New York, and a number for Europe. In addition to this, there were various bills of es at Richmond, for pork and other articles, and la kages of money, principally in s in the Confederate States All of these articles, days the reporter, were done up in neat packages, and looked as if they had been subjected to the pressure of an hydraulic press. The ingenuity that contrived this new mode of carrying letters was commendable; but it was baffied by the perseverance and patience of the officers at Harrisburg. Mr. Kelly was provided with another shirt and ac- commodations with his comrades in the county rison. The money was placed for safe keep- ng in one of the banks, and the letters and other documents were delivered to the Attor- ney General. There ought to be valuable rev- elations in these documents concerning spies and traiters in New York, as well as in other places. Kelly’s shirt is a valuable acquisition to the Government. e Newspaper Caaxors 1x New York.—The Tribune of Saturday reports another newspa- per change in that city. It ss “It is understood that The New York World and Courier and Enquirer was sold out a few days ago, machinery, stock, good will and all, to Mr. John K. Ford, one of the rincipal stockholders. Out of this sum Mr. Ford is to pay all the debts incurred by the establish- ment since the Ist of July last, and the $17,000 mo. on the press, held by Mr. Hoe. As The World paid $100,000 (in stock) for The Courier and Enquirer a few weeks since, Mr. F. has evidently obtained a bargain. 6 ex- penses of The World are said to be $1,500 per week in excess of receipts. The experi- ment of publishin, laily religious newspaper has cost the proprietors $200,000 in cash, and their journ: © very slight reputation for piety which it established at the start.’’ U7" One day last week a e number ing men assembled at the G: pres oon, ‘Syracuse, to witness the skill of « Mies who hails from Texas or New Orleans, where it is said his flag was taken Hoyt, and brought to New York by Mise Hoe or! concealed under the skirt of her dress.” Mtes Hoyt offers to roll with any gentleman. in, io now ying at kia hone, itretsan. sylvania, ow ‘owanda.
