re AA td Mi al THE EVENING STAR. Pe ada ict aebinlamciliese. eats ene at Nover Barioox Ascexsw~.—A letter from Fortress Monroe says: a Prof. La Mountain made a novel ascension He took his baloon on board the steamer Fanny, and when she was sbout mid-way the Roads ascended about two thousand feet into the air, xopes attached to the balloon still being held en board. The steamer then started slowly down the river, i very near Sewell’s Point and then across towards Pig’s Point and Newport-News. The rrconnorssanes was complete. La Mountain could look dowa upon their work gt Sewell’s Point finely. He reports that behind the line of woods which skirts the Point, the Rebels are working sctively upon batteries, and mounting guns which will be made to bear upon the Kip-Reps, upon the shipping, and the Fortress. There are a number of encampmenis. When the Rebels saw him nearly above them, they concealed themselves as scon as possible in the works aniwatched him from behind them or the trees near by. (ther information obtained Ys not made public. The method of the ascen- sion was enticly ve and the reconnoissance decidely the most satisfactory one which has been made at this pos How tue Secesa Bi c Cousty.—Yesterday m ng some of the Se- cesh magistrates in Marion county attempted to hold court, and sueceeded like the famous Indianaian did in keeping a hotel. ‘Thezo same magistrates met about a month ago, but the Union men suggested some little preliminaries having reference to the Holy Bible and a romise to support the government estab ty the Wheeling Conventien. The magistrates refused to swear; and rather than haye any trouble about it they adjourned. Yesterday they met again, with reinforcements. The Union men were also on hand. Secesh said they intended to hold cwurt by the authority of State of Virginia. The Union men said the authority to which they alluded was played out; that Secesh must comply with the arrange- ments of the government of the State “as re- organized and restored,” or else they couldn’t hold court. The magistrates then left the bench and marched away to clow and discord- ant music, produced by the groans and hisses of the loyal populace. “fhe Union men of Ma- rion know their strength, which they did not when secession was up. Now secession is down. Bev State seal—sic semper tyrannis.—Wheel- tug Intelligencer, 6th.
