In the other (at Miss English’s Seminary) out of 250 patients admitted since July 23, whea the hospital ‘was opened, only Qsbave died. There are now two Army hospitals in George- town and three in Washington—besides the one recently opened on E street and the —— for contagious diseases on Capitol Hill. Of the three mentioned, one ii the old Infirmary building eat the City Hall) and is in charge of the isters of Mercy, and usually contains about 200 patients; another is on C street, and is devoted to sick and wounded regulars; the third is at Co- lumbia College building, and with the hospital tents pitebed in the vicinity will accommodate comfortably nearly 5v0soldiers. Half that number are now thete. Of the fea cece hospitals we sre able to speak more Pe icularly, baving vis- ited them oue afternoon this week Of these the largest is in the Union Hotel building on Bridge street, opened on the 29th dayof May. [thas beds to aceommodate 230 patients, and ite of state- ments to the contrary, has never had more than within {ts walls. Tbe rooms are spaciees, and the fell number of patients might be com- fortably sccommodated, as the ceilings are high, the windows numerous and iarge, and the ai rangements for ventilation quite as good as in the buildings of the same ciass anywhere. The patients —_ to be cheerful and contented, and k in the highest terms of the kindness of it attendents, and gratefully acknowledge ™many favors frem the citizens of Georgetown We made the tour of the establishment yester- day, and if dis to be evet so fastidious and bypercritical could have found no fanlt with the ettendants for lack of order or cleanliness At the time of our t there were 153 patients in the house, and of these about 60 were wounded. The last death was that of Jas Garbett, of the ‘3th New York regiment, who died a day or two since, of pneumonia We talked with many of the wounded—there ‘was private Bugby, fellow, of one of the Connecticut regiments, who had bis shoulder tiered at Vienna by a Minle bullet, and has tain in the hospital ever since, seven long weeks, end borne bis sufferings with the S goosals pa- tience and fortitude. Forty pieces of bone have been extracted, and he is now, it is hoped, on the read to recovery. He Is laying o1 ‘water bed,” (gutta percha filled with water,) the only one in the house. One member of the New York 2d regiment we saw, James Mason, bad his bond dreadfully mangled by a fragment of shell at Bull Run. Capt. Smith and Lieut Sinclair, of the 79th Highlanders, take the matter quite easily, have a label! over their quarters juscribed Sinclair & Smith, Hotel de Manassas’ Lieut Sinclair had two bullets it through his leg, near the knee, at Stone Bi e, but Is doing well” Dr_Ganseler is in charge. We are under many obligations to the ladies of the Institute, and to Mr. A J. Chamberlain, ward master, for their kindness in pointing out many tbings of interest about the bi ishinen: We also visited the hospital at Miss English’s Academy, located a few hundred yards north of the “ Union,” orPelevated ground, in one of the most bealthy, quiet and pleasant neighborhoods in Georgetown contained, at the time of our visit, 145 patients, of whem ne eit, only, were soldiers wounded in the late le. It has beds for and can conveniently accommodate 150 patients. Dr. bh R. Smith is in charge. and we were shown through the wards by his accommodating assist- ent, Dr W.H. Forwood. Cleanliness and good order prevailed, and the patients all appear to be well cared for. The rooms are high and airy, and the corridors and windows and doors are so arranged as to afford thorough ventilation. No more suitable building could be found. The range for cooking is of the most approved con- struction, and has an arrangement for heating water, which can be forced ee pipes to the bed-rooms, of which there"is one in each story. Thus hot or cold watercan be used at will for bathing. Oa the east side of the building there are long porches, with doors openiag on theyn from each story. where convalescent patients can sit and read the news, or smoke their pipes, as we saw some doing in the cool of theevening. The yard in the rear is cool and shady, and yery pleas- ant for fever patients—of which there aré many here—to look out upon We are glad to chronicle these efforts st hu- man zing wer. Everyone may do something for the comfort of the sick and wounded, and no exertions should be spared to relieve their suffer- ings. ImpROVEMENTS aT THE Derot.—Improvements have been progressing round about the depot of ite until that vicinity presents a scene of activity and life exceedingly refreshing tn these times of general prestration. The high board fence erected some time since. enclosing a large space for freight, &c.. bes been removed so as to enlarge the yard, into which another branch of the rail- vend ed been extended. The large butiding erected for the convenience of arriving and de- perting troops is nearly completed. Baths, &c., are belny arranged tn it, which will prove an important item in the preservation of health and comfort. Adjoining the cane factory a small building bas been located for the sbelter of cock- ing utensils, &c_, of the troops quartered there on guard duty, and nothing omitted that can in any tespect add to the comfort of the volunteers The deep gully which basso long disfig Capito! street is also about to be filled, tiles ha been hoe ayo atthe depot for the construction of a drain, thereby remedying the evil resulting from shower. With ail the arrangements for expedition and the energy of the officers of this branch of the road, it is at times impossible to accommodate the immense amount of supplies pouring In, and should the present condition of affairs continue, it will become necessary to still farther increase the provisions for accommodation and dispatch. Tux Smact Pox—SuaLt IT Bk SPREADTHROUGH our city ?—Editor Star: I desire, through the columns of your paper, to call the attention of the authorities, military and civil, to what seems to me and other citizens as a very serious oversight, if not absolute outrage, in locating the sesit-pox hospital in the thickly-settled portion of our cit For a month or more past. soldiers afficted with this terrible disease have been quartered at a pri- vate house, used as a hospital, and located on F irst street east, between B and C sts. north—less than two ayesiee @istant from the Capitol itself! The neighborhood around is densely settled ; and the location of such a house in the very midst of a large population is, to say the least, a most Strange and inexcusable proceeding. The pump whence the water nsed there !s obtained stands near by, and is the only one to sspply = latge number of the citizens of theneighborhocd. How can it be otherwise than that the disease should spread in the vicinity? Every day, inmates of the hospital appear on the streets and visit the shops in the neighborhood, just in the condition to spread the disease’ Why was not the bospital located out of the city? We have a right to pro- test, and do protest, most vehemently yet respect- fully, against having onr own and our family’s lives thus wantouly and needlessly endangered. We ask that the authorities at once remove this pest house from our midst A CITIZEN oF THE NEIGHBORHOOD. The ambulance con- taining four sick soldiers was upset, but all had managed to get out at the rear of the wagon except one man, and his back was broken by the shock. The driver, Robert McClellan, a worthy young man, was thrown some distance and so seriously injured internally as that his recovery is doubtful. The injured men were taken to the nearest hospital The embulance is a wreck, but the horses escaped without injury. to ag = Inquest —Yesterday afternoon Coroner Wood- ward held an inquest In view of the body of the teamster Wolfe, who was shot yesterday near the railroad, in Swampoodle.
