GroncErown, August 3, 1861 The Provost Guard, which Is acting with such efficiency in clearing Washington of disorderly soldiers, Is doing bad service for our citizens, as the stragglers finding the other side of Rock creek too warm for them, come over bere and are able to get an unlimited supply of bad whisky and roam the streets at will, causing great annoy- ance to our people and endangering their lives and property. Last night lollies wee grossly in- sulyd at their own homes, on Bridge and Con- gress streets, by rowdies In uniforms, who walked bee private dwellings as if they belenged to em. Company H of the 26th Pennsylvania Regi- ment, is performing patrol duty here, and is ef~ ficient in that service; but before one can send to their quarters on W ater street from up town, the wretches complained of are generally off to otber seenes of action. Why is teint the authority of the Provost Guard does not extend to this city? Limited to Wasbinzton, it fails to accomplish all the objects of the orgenization, as and straygiers are driven here to rendezvous and not fo the camps where they belong. A private in one of the Massachusetts Regt. ments fell out of 2 window at the headgqvarte: of company H, Pennsylvania Regiment (former! y Sweeny ’s warebouse.) on Water street, last night, and was seriously injured. He was immediately removed to the Military Hospital Rev. W. C. Stitt has returned, and »8 will be seen by notice in another column, preach to-mor- row evening at Market street Chapel.
