XVII. + INQ : WASHINGTON. D. C.. SATURDAY. MARCH 9. 1861. Visit of General Beauregard te the Charles- ton Fertifications—Fert Sumter. On Monday last Brigadier-General Beaure- rd, the newly appointed commander of the tate forces in Charleston harbor, visited, in company with Governor Pickens and his Aids, Fort Johnson, Cumming’s Point and the Morris Island battery. The Courier, in noticing the visit, says: “Gen. Beauregard was very much struck with the amount of work that had been the general p: and strength of the fortificatior They did not visit Fort Moultrie, but Gen. Beaure; expressed per- fect confidence that Fort Sumter could be re- duced, and that it was a question only of time.” formidable character of the undertaking may be well gathered from the following grephic rouping of the ‘‘obstacles’”’ to success y the fe eorrespondent of the New Orleans Delta, who writes on the 26th ultimo: ry few, | apprehend, realize to their full extent the almost insurmountable difficulties which lie in the way of the reduction of its massive granite walls. In trath, with an ade- quate garrison, itcan hardly be doubted that the fort would be altogether impregnable to any force that the State of South Carolina would be able to bring against it. Even with the eighty-six men who now constitute the garrison to covers them, I doubt whether there are many volunteer armies in the world that would not quail when brought face to face with the terrible fact that those towering parapets have to be carried by assault at the point of the bayonet. For the benefit of those who have never seen the position which the Fort occupies in the harbor of Charleston, I will — ulate briefly some of the cireum- stances which combine to give it so formidable @ character. Its walls, which built of stone, brick, and concrete, rise abruptly from the waters of the harbor, to the height of sixt, feet. The faces of the walls are pierced with two tiers of heavy easemate guns, while a third tier, ez barbette, may be seen with their black muzzles peering jealously from the top of the parapet. The first great difficulty that stares us in the face is that to take these walls—unappro: able by land—we have no navy. Storming parties then would have to approach the walls either in steamboats or row boats for a dis- tance of full three quarters of a mile under the fire of shells, red het solid shot and y But, suppesing this ordeal passed, and that the assailants have reached in safety the foot of the walls. Amid the unpleasant concomi- tants of showers of hand grenades and volleys of musketry they must elevate their Jadders, which, being more than seventy feet long, must necessarily be very heavy and very un- wieldy. Now comes another and very serious trouble. Where are they to plant their scaling ladders? Tho water adjacent to the walls is ‘too deep, and, to prevent all chance of the lad- ders being hooked on to the edge of the para- pet, Major Anderson has cunningly had his - en at work sloping off the edge of the ma- ‘gonry, and removing every ledge of ornamen- Aal brickwork which might expedite the pro- e@ess of fixing the ladders. Thus you see the only chance is to have the boats or rafts, upon the swipes 2 ies approach, of suf- a solidity to sustain the foot le men ascend. How is likely that such a solid structure could be brought uninjured under the wails, after having passed the discharges of the eight-inch @inmhinds in the casemates, I leave you to jad tf ‘These are only a portion of the discouraging : facta which render the aseault of Fort Sumter @ rather a — z= _ detailed them *Y merely to explain why it has been necessary that the preparations should have been cor- respondingiy elaborate. The annals of war- fare present few instances where so formida- ble post has fallen before means of attack so entirely inadequate. And yet I bel! that ¢ the impetuous valor of the Palmetto regiments , will atone for every deficiency, and that the ¢« Federal fiag will not float much longer over ye the bulwark of our harbor. im eanwhile I may mention the great point ich the State has gained. Notwithstanding ” blustering of the abolition papers at tho reg North, which pretend to believe the contrary, now utterly impossible to reinforce Major Anderson's garrison without a fight, in which Uncle Sam would be pretty certain to get worsted. The ships or boats which bring re- forcements will have to run the gauntlet of line of batteries which are certain to sink the largest ship. If an attempt should je to send the reinforcements by land, weshall have a pitched battle, and the of men defending their homes and ies will be tested inst the grim and charge of Scott’s disciplined birelings. — —<co Z Coriovs Fucitive Suave Case—Mar $ OvrwitteD.—On Monday evening citi- gens in the vicinity of Third and South streets alarmed by hearing loud noises in tle t the rear of their dwellings. They ered two men sealing fences and other- emselves in a very erratic manner. A gentleman of that been thus awakened from to visions of burglary od mur der, seized « musket and drew sight upon the intruder The latter called out that they were not thieves, but United States marshals on the track of certain English housebreakers. The eteer thereupon descended to the yard, as made acquainted with the foil Wholesale Killing in Fierida. The following is an account of the tragedy Sumter county, Fla., on the Andrews, of the M. E. Church, killed two men and wounded two others. He was of seduc: ig girl 14 or 15 years of age, a relative, living at his house at the time. He was furt! ae of severely whi; the young girl, and ac- Keonledeed pet to the citizens. For these misdeeds a summons was issued for him to sp- at the Court House, at Sumterville, be- pa © people, on Saturday, the 16th inst. Having heard of this, and of the parties who were to serve the summons, Messrs. McLen- don and Lang, roceeded to the house of the former and took dinner with the family. After dinner, they went to the workshop. An- drews asked jon for the loan of his horse, to go to Adamsville, which was ted. He had in his possession one double-barreled , one yager rifle, two repeaters, and two Revie xatee While the horse was being conversation arose about him (An- mmoned before the Regulators. Whereupon Lang said, ‘Yes, Sir; and here ist for you.’’ During this conver- satton, McLendon was mending a pair of shoes. Immediately after Lang’s answer, An- drews leveled his gun at McLendon, shot him in the side, and killed him instantly. Turning round guickly, he leveled his gun to shoot Lang with the other barrel. Lang knocked up the gun, and received the load in the palm of his right hand. Lang then picked up An- drews’ yager to shoot him (Andrews,) but could not cock it on account of his shattered hand. He threw down the gun, and ran. As he ran, Andrews shot him through the left wrist with arepeater. A Mr. Hyatt, in the shop at the time, picked up the yager, ran off about thirty yards, and leveled it at Andrews, but th ter was too quick. and shot Hyatt with hii peater, grazing him on the shoulder. Hyatt shot, but missed. Hereupon, Andrews took after g, and pursued him 200 yards. Not being able to overtake him, he returned to the shop, reloaded his guns, and proceeded over to Mr. Condray’s, about one mile distant. At Condray’s gate, Andrews met Dr. McHenry, whom he told he was tired and very thirsty. and eda drink of water Stepping in- side the yard, and seeing Mr. Condray talking to a negro boy, observed, “I have com- menced my work, and right here I intend to finish it.’’ Whereupon he leveled his gun and shot Condray through the bowels, who only lived about four hours. The Rev. Mr. Parker being present, seized the wretch from behind, and held him fast until McHenry came to his assistance. As the Dr. caught hold of Andrews the latter presented his gun atthe Doctor’s breast, who warded it off, and the load went into the ground. He was then tied and confined until next morning, under strict guard. The news having been circulated in the neighbor- hood, a large number of citizens assembled at Condray’s house. After due deliberation, he was adjudged to be worthy of being hanged, and about 12 o’clock m . he was hanged ac- i 'y or seventy citizens of the ing his death warrant. There jenting voice on the ground. The last words of this hardened wretch were, ‘I am only sorry that I did not kill three er four more.’’’ Is THE AvtTuMN of 1847, a venerable old tleman, bald, with thin silvery locks falling smoothly round his head, sat in a box of the old Park Theater, accompanied by two youn; ladies. The first act was over, and barely hai the drop curtain touched the stage, when a gen- tleman arose in a box alittle way off from where the venerable man sat, and in a loud voice shouted: “ Ladies and gentlemen, I an- nounce to you the presence of Non. John Quin- cy Adams, ex-President of the United States.” Instantaneously the audience arose, and three hearty cheers greeted the patriot, statesman, and sage. At the instant, too, the orchestra ceased their usual theater airs, and gave in glorious style, “Hail Columbia,’’ “Yankee Doodle.” and the “Star Spangled Banner,”’ in rapid succession. The audience remained standing until the last note had died away. These demonstrations were received with that serene modesty which ever dwells with true reatness—by a low, graceful bow, and without the utterance of a responsive word. The ex- President sat out the whole play. The next session of Congreas witnessed the close of his memorabledife. New Use ror Paotograrus.—A Western correspondent speaks of having seen ‘‘season ses’ and ‘ commutation tickets’? on the Bhicago and Milwaukee railroad, bearing the pho jh of the person to whom they are is- sued. Thisis a capital idea. These photographs are now furnished, about the size of a postage stamp, at the rate of frem thirty to one bun- dred for a dollar, already gummed; and when the applicant wants a pass, or commutation ticket, a incloses his pho ph, which being placed upon the card when issued, enables the conduetor to see at a glance whet the ticket is being presented by the original, or, as is too often the case, by some one who has borrowed it.
