ete ce O84 esa merge Pass ~- " wd ra Betitet goon THE EVENING STAR Tue Areicaw Stave Traps —The disunion leaders of the Gulf States are just now nervously anxious to create, im Virginea, the impression that they are not disposed to reopen the African slave trade. Ta that end only were the anti-African slave trade resolutions recently passed by the Georgia aad Alabama conventions. The craven: tion of Louisiana that bad not “received the cue’ however, not very long since tabled, by a vote of more than two to one, a resolution instruct- ing that State's delegates to the Montgomery convention to vote therein for a pledge that the proposed Soutbern Confederacy will not reopen de. Wife tad: when it was discovered that it ‘would not do to have that vote known in Virginia until efter the latter's election a week or two ago, @resolution was passed deciaring that it had been voted down because the convention was indisposed to embarrass the action of their delegates to Mont- gomery with any instructions. So far as the masses in the Gulf States really ‘sympathize with the disunion moversent, they do 80 only upon the principle upon which the masses of the non slaveholding States nearly all favored the enactment of the Homestead bill—though not one in ten thousand of them will ever avail them- selves of the privileges of the law. The masses in the Gulf States “‘ go in’ for “ negroes for the negroless” almost as enthusiastically as those at the ‘North for “land for the Isndless.’ In the Golf States the idea of cheap negroes is as popular, quite, as that of cheap land is at the North. If disunion becomes a fixed fact, and the people of the Gulf States obtain an opportunity—as they surely would in that event—to vote upon the policy of reopening the African slave trade, they will, in a twinkle, repudiate any pledges thelr leaders lately gave for effect upon the Virginia election of a Convention, with as much non- chslance as Mississipp! and Florida manifested in times past when repudiating the obligations of their State bonds. We repeat: the prospect of “‘negroes for the negroless’’ has alone induced the messes in the Gulf States to listen to disunion teachings up to this time. {7 Orange or lemon juice left u aknife or other piece of iron, will ina few days, produce a sta neo nearly resembiing that caused by bleod asto deceive the most careful observer; and not many years ‘2 Paris, a man was nearly con- victed of mu: owing to knife being found in his possession with what was prouounced by sey- etal witnesses to be blood, but afterward discov- ered to be lime juice. Advices from Charleston State thatthe obstructions piaced in the shi cbanrel of that port have been entirely remo’ by the action od teen; and not a vestige of the Sunken vessels remains.
