A very good-looking woman, who had just returned to the busy world after a somewhat i ¥ Beaton of retirement at Queensville, en- tered the place and demanded wherewith to taise her drooping spirits, but the bat-Reeper politely refused to comply; wheteupon she went out in great rage, and with ber fists attacked the front window in so energetic a manner that before the man could interpose there was not an unbroken pane left therein. Great was the bar-keeper’s in- dtgnation, but his wrath was mild compared with that of the goed-looking woman a few minutes subsequently, when Justice Cull adjudged her worthy of another ninety days? residence at her late rural home on the picturesque banks of the Anacostia. The water tapper, Mr. 4. L. Gettier, was the sufferer. The factsare, that the tapper seeing the Perseverance Fire Com- pany approaching called them to the four-way plug at F and Thirteenth streets. The boxes around those plugs are always more of less filled with gas or foul air. While the tappeét was lean- ing over the plug in the Act of opening it, a per- son foolishly a ched with a large lantern and put it In the box to give light to the tapper.
