Tae New York Avenve Crurce —One of the most aoticeable improvements which has been effected in our city during the nt season is the new Presbyterian Church, lhe juncture of New York avenue with H street, between Four- teenth and Fifteenth streets. Thedesign, by Mr. Edward Havilland, of this city. is Roman Corin- thian, and is admirably sui to the site. The basement story centains a commodious room de- signed as the pastor's ropes a well arranged apartment for the use of the ladies’ sewing society, and a large and elegantly fitted up audience room, capable of sating a numerous congrega- tlon. T rooms are capitaliy arranged with reference to light and ventilation. The principal audience room is eighty feet in length, by sixty feet in width, and contains accommodations for seating between seven and eigbt hundred persons « The are set on a curve line, so as to face the thereby making yal Digivie one for seeing ai The ceiling rises toa bight of thirty feet, and is constructed in panel wo:k, and the room is lighted on a plan similar to that adopted for lighting the new houses of Congress, only much more economical. The sunk panels each contain acircular pane of ground lass, and immediately above each pane is 3 gas- ght with a powerful silver plated reflector over it, which forces the light through the glass into the reom. lare of gas burners is thus avoided, umination {s sufficient and pleasan The congregation are indebted for this simplifi- cation of the pian of lighting to Mr. Mel. , one of the building committee, while the excellence of the work is attributable to the mechanical in- telligence of Messrs Myers & McGhan, to whom the yas-fitting and plumbing was intrusted. The frescoing of the wi cefling, and recess at the rear of the room is under the skillful manage- ment of Messrs. Scbutter & Michzelson, who are exec the work in admirable style. The entrance tothe main body of the church is by duplicate flights of broad granite side steps under a portico supported by four beautiful columns of tron of the corinthian order. These columns, we are to be able to state. were manufactured in Washington, at the foundry of Messrs. Ellis & Bro., and are considered to be the finest specimens of the iron founders art in the city, not excepting the best iron work on any of our public buildings; and what is more worthy of notice, were furnished at considerable less expense than could have been done elsewhere.
