Correspondence of The Star. Waite Scipave Spaixes, } Greenbrier county, Va., Sept. 15, 1860 Dear Star: 1 think I’ve met somewhere some TMnes commencing ‘‘Oft in the stilly night,” and in which the writer goes on to remark that he feels like one who treads alone some banquet-hall deserted, whose lights are fied, whose garlands dead, and ali but him gone home to bed. ‘Them’s my feelings precisely, as | stroll through the deserted grounds at the White Sulphur, and gaze upon its cream colored hotel and straw-col- ored cottages, lately over-ran by some two thou- sand pleasure-seekers, now tenantless, or much the same. Less than an hundred people are prob- ably here at this date, and the egol nights and foggy mornings are sending the remainder away by euch stage. It is, however, bigh carnival time at the Sweet Sulphur, sixteen miles from here, where the crowd always goes to wind up the Season, the water there being held as the correct thing to tone off the other waters and oil up the renovated clockwork of the system to run pre- elsely 365 days and the fractional hours and min- nites. At the Red Sulphur Springs (Monroe county) on my way here, I found myself in the midst of a company of consumptives. This Spring (Red Sulphur) ts considered to have some wonderful property making it efficacious in lung diseases, and the consequence is one of the most ghostly gather- imaginable. Hollow cheeks, pinched nostrils, iia lps, and those clear, bright eyes peculiar to the consumptive victim meet one at turning, and the backing and barking 1s terrible to bear. All night lo: was kept awake by the hollow, racking cough of my neighbors in adjoining thin-partitiened rooms. The fare is = at the Red, the valley beautiful, (not unlike Baden- Baden,) and Cowles is the most thoughtful and kindly of bosts, but the company is too spectral by halt, and I was off on Monday morning. It aad to see such hopeless cases clutching so at i‘fe, gulping down the water by the half dozen rias.“28, (one poor fellow told me he was averag- ng 35 “lasses to the 24 hours,) and weighing themselves daily with feverish Interest to ascer- are on the mend. en Suihor, midway between the Red and the White, is ‘eld in affectionate remem- brance by all who loye 00d eattng, and = cul- sine, rather than the virtue of its waters, I dare say, makes its popularity. ‘ paused here lo: enough to sample the two springs and teres = 0 Erskine’s dinners, and then came on 4 this pi -" ng through the rich limestone "0rtion o: Kronroe county. The land in this fine “ounty, seems to be largely in the hands of a few we. ‘thy men After leaving Union, the pretty county seat of Monroe, our reed ‘was skirted for a long distance by the fertile acres of Oliver Burns, Esq., one of the plantation millionaires of Virginia, and who is also the proprietor of the fashionable Sweet Springs. fn his pastures we saw some of the Sine stock that attracted so much attention at the Richmond fair Oats, hay, and corn do well in Monroe this sea- wheat but poorly, suffering from rust, and from being winter-k ans a a =e turesque eminences, « ”? were in sight for along timeon this road. We passed many of the caverns, sink-boles, and sinking- creeks, peculiar to limestone districts; and beau- tiful park-like groves of ite oak, with loxuri- rages of blue-grass, claimed attention in jon of Monroe county ‘ Entering Greenbrier county at Second Creek, our course was through an ini ing country all the way to the sun: where the famed ‘W bite Salphur =priny rises in the midstof warm- tinted verdure clad mountains Let me tell you asecret —the White Sulpbur water isn’t white, the Salt Sulphur isn’t salt, the Red Sulphur isn’t “ ged; and, though | baven’t been there, | doubt “2 verily the cerulean hue of the Blue Sulphur, or Ye the saccharine qualities of the Sweet Sulphur. Bat they are all sufficiently nasty. Tbe Red Sul- phar, the most palatable, tastes simply like a last years’ ben's-egg; the Salt Sulphur like a bad egg seasoned with Bia batter; the White Sulphur Ike the bad egg and butter flavored with rancid castor o:l. Itsavors moreover of roased | sant peroba. The White Sulphur water tastesas Tem- perance alley (our city) smells. For the month of August the re- ceipts are perhaps $4,000 per day, but in July and September the receipts will not more than meet The Red Sulpbur Springs are up for though apparently the season has veen ® most prosperous one there No doubt the completion tou and Obio Railroad to this point (White Salphur) will have an important beari: on the prosperity of the Springs in a paying point of view, not only as immensely increasing the number of visitors, but as reducing the expenses of the Springs establishments. I[t strikes me as bad policy this road has been commenced a patel bers and a patch there over a long extent of yreand, whereas the same labor and money con- ecentrated upon a continuous portion of the lower end of the route would have alread: such ta runping order, and it could be earning a0 while the next division should be in prog- ress of construction, and so on. 1 a visit, to-day, to the bottling establish- of the White Sulphur, where the water is put up and sent away for the benefit of those who annot come bere to drink it A quantity of corks were in soak {na metallic basin. ones rimsing empty bottles pre; tory ag them qrith the oning water, whieh was falling in two clear streams from faucets; while others were em- joyed corking the filled bottles and bearing them &a adjoining room, where they were wrapped dn bayand packed in boxes, two dozen tothe box, to be ssid at $4 the box. Besides these, eight bodies have been recovered at Racine and sent to Milwaukie—six were men, one boy six or eight of age, and one woman—two of which were identified as James Kice and D. Weeks, of Milwaukie. A large number of the bodies sent to Milwaukie from as unknown, were identified there. Two bodies were also brought into Milwaukie on Wednesday—one, the body of Mrs. Thomas Bohan, found by the Grand Havew steamer; the other was brought in by the schooner Bonesteel, and is the body of a woman about thi:ty-five years of age. Three bodies have been found at Kenosha Mistaken Ipentivication. A number of mistakes have occurred in the identification of bodies from the wreck of the Lady mea, oo some of whicb have been attended with no little trouble to the friends of the lost. A strange one occurred on Sunday last, over a bod: supposed to be that of young Comerford, of Mi!- waukie. Upon the arrival of the body at the cemetery from the tug, it was claim: by the friends of Comerford, and sworn to as his body. Buta few minutes bad elapsed, however, before ano‘ her » friends of Mr. Pearce, claimed it, believing it to be bis body; and later st{li another party, as positive that it was the body of a man named McAuliffe After a careful examination of the body and com ison with descriptions, the Pearce and McAuliffe parties withdrew their elaims, and the body was delivered to the friends of Comerford and taken to Milwaukie that night Arrived at that place, the body was placed in a metallic case, and preparations made for the fu- ueral. Every arrangement was effected—the mil- itary, of which Comerford was a member, were out, and the corpse would soon bave been interred, when yet another Logg Sect any upon the ground, and proving almost beyond a doubt that it was the body of a man named O'Brien, triumphant! bore it away. The elothing and articles foun upon the body talliéd very nearly with descrip- tions furnished of Comerford, Pearce and McAu- liffe, with the —- that it was fiualiy ascer- tained that both Pearce and McAuliffe bad on shoes, while on the body were found boots. Com- erford was supposed to have on boots, as he had worn a pair from the house, and white socks, while on the body were found two odd socks The friends of O’Brien, however, to prove their claim to the bse at So the pair of boots Com- erford had worn away from bome, and which he had left at a bootmaker’s, wearin; away a pair of shoes purchased at the place, and also two odd socks mating the ones found on the body. Mx. Lumspxn anv Famity.
