Engle, Chief of the Chiriqui Commission. The hydrograpical party, under Lieut. Jeffers, had completed the surveys at the Chiriqui Lagoon, and proceeded to Aspinwall in the Brooklyn, arriving there September 12. On the 15th they left the Brooklyn and crossed the Isthmus, to be conveyed in a Government vessel tp the harbor of Golfite. The Brooklyn then re- turned to the Lagoon. Before the departure of the Brooklyn for Aspin- wall, information had been received of the safe arrival of Lieut. Morton and his party at Caldera August 31, having crossed the mountains in five days. Two of tbe corps bad been sent to Dolega for supplies, and would meet Lieut. Morton at the Boquette, from which point the survey would commence toward each ocean. They were in fine health and spirits. He traveled ID A shocking attempt to murder a woman ‘was made in New York on Monday by her lover and aspirant to her hand, one Henry N. Pierre- pont, a sheemaker. The victim was Hannah Jones, keeper of a boarding-house, Morris street. She was engaged to Pierrepont, and on Sunday nightcircumstances with reference tothe woman’s conduct excited his jealousy, and on Monday he called at her house and demanded an explanation. Her reply did not satisfy him, so he drew his knife and gave hera severe wound in the arm.
