Several of the convicts, one of the keepers, and the captain of a sloop at the dock, on which they took refuge, were stabbed—the latter fatally and the former dangerously. —— Tax Veemont Exsection.—The returns from nearly one-balf of the State show a large majority for Fairbank, republican, fer Governor. Benedict, mate of the ship Fidelia, has been arrested in New York upon a charge of murder, and David Ferguson, the sec- ond mate of the same ship, as an accomplice, for assquiting with a handspike and afterwards chasing overboard one of the crew, who was drowned, on the late voyage to that port. UF Mejor Culberton, who has just come ftom the Rocky Mountains, says that the head waters of the Missouri and Columbia rivers are so near together that he at one time drank from the Mis- souri.on the east side of the Rocky Mountains, ‘end & half an hour afterwards from the Columbia on the Pacific. There were five slaves and two free negroes; but they were way- laid on the read, and on Sunday lodyed in An- napolis jail. There were a number of other slaves who were to have gone off if this first attemp; had been successful.
