Blondin and Farini at Niagara. The Buffalo Express of the 30th ultimo re- counts the feats of the rival rope-walkers over the Niagara river, as follows: aes: ‘The announcement that these notorious indi- viduals would each carry ® man upon their te- spective backs over their respective cables, drew a crowd to the Falls yesterday. At leas! one thonsaud persons went from this city. Biondin’s performance was witnessed by, we should say, four thousand peo, tationed within his enclosures on the rican and Canadian sides, and upon the bridge. Precisely at four o’clock the Frenchman made his appearance, and ran out upon his rope. Having proceeded perhaps two hundred feet, he commenced a series of gymnastic ex- ercises that we venture to say mo other man in the world would dare attempt. First he lay fall length upon the rope; then he turned a number of back somersaults, then he hung by both feet; then by one foot; then by one leg crooked at the knee-joint ; then he stood upon his head. These feats were performed with amazing rapidity—a rapidity that was fearful to witness, or would have been, bat for the per- fect self-possession that was apparent in every motion. Having reached thecentre of his rope, Blon- din laid aside: his balance-pole, placed his stomach upon the cable and went through the motions of swimming, after which he descended the swing, which is a permanent fixture at that int. This swing hangs about thirty feet be- ow thecable. Here he act himself whirling, making eighteen revolutions in about as many seconds, and performing various other sur prising feats, concluding and climaxing the whole by hanging to the swing with his head downwards. He then ascended to the cable, picked up his pole, and trotted to the Canada side. The time occupied in the whole journey was a little over fifteen minutes. a Afte: elay of about half an hour, which was mainly oceupied in adjusting the guys, Monsieur Blondin made his appearance on the Canada end of the cable, bearing his agent, Mr. Harry Colcord, — his back. Cousider- ing the fuct that Mr. Coleord weighs one bun- dred and forty-five pounds, and that Blondin himself weighs but one hundred and twenty- five, it ay imagined that he had a pretty good load to carry. It was pest wonderful to witness the ease with which Blondin achieved this most difficult and dangerous undertaking. Colcord left his perch—we cannot think of a better word—but twice during the entire walk, and then merely stood upon the rope for half a minute or so, for the purpose of “ straightening out.” In exactly fourteen minutes trom the time they left the Canada shore they were re- ceived upon the American side with the hearty plaudits of the assembled thousands. Farini started with his man—a Canadian by the name of McMullen—at five o'clock. He entered upon his task with evident fear and trembling, and proceeded with itin « bungling and awkward manner. Having gone about fifty feet, he compelled his animate load to de- scend from his position, stretch out its respec- tive legs, place its hands upon his shoulders, and trudge along after him. It was carry and unload, unload and carry, for three-quarters of an hour that he occupied in his “ perform ance’’—which is acknowledged by all to have been an exceedingly sorry one. It was wit- nessed by less than fifteen hundred persons. Parini may have pluck, but he lacks tuct and experience. He may aspire to be called the rival of Biondin, but at present he must con- sent to be known merely as his imitator. f A Mauvora Arr Sarp.—An suronaut at Rome, in New York, is just finishing a balloon which will eclipse even Prof. Lowe's “City of New York,” in which that gentleman intends crossing the Atlantic. The Rome Sentinel gives the following facts and figures about this monster balloon : “Phere are about 8.700 yards of cloth in the balloon ; over this is the netting, weighing 900 Ibs. The balloon when inflated is 205 feet high —or some 20 feet higher than the steeple of the Presbyterian church in this village. Its dia- meter is 11s feet, and to fill it requires 1,731,000 eubic feet of gas. Thecost of balloon gas in some localities is $2, and others less; ordina- rily about $2 perm. At that rate it would cost over $3,000 to fill it. The car and basket is 394 feet in circumference and 13 in diameter, aud is made of rattan and is to be carpeted with Brussels carpet, und seats are to be on the inside similar to those of an omnibus. Over 22 miles of sewing has been done on this balloon; its lifung power is over 69,000 Iba. “{t is three times us large as the ~-City of New York,” i which Professor Lowe advertised he w: tempt to cross the Atlantic last fall—that bal- loon held 700,000 cubic feet of gas? the‘Atlan- tie,’ which La Mouutain crossed Lakes Erie and Ontaria in, held some 60.000 feet of gas; and when he and Mr. Haddock made their famous ascension from Watertown, it would contain some 25,000. It will thur be seen that Mr Coe has made and prepared his balloon vu the largest scale, and is making ample pre- parations for a splendid exhibition and ascen- sion. He now intends to go to St. Souis, or some city west, to make exhibitions, and endeavor to find that easterly current, in which he is such a firm believer, and which has had so many seekers. The cost of the balloon will be several thousand dellars, and is really worth a sight.” In April last he commenced the work on a balloon, which is to be finished in the course of a week or 80. The use of the Arsenal building was procured, and init the work has been progressing for the past four months—there being for two months some eighteen to twenty hands, and at other times a less number of hands at work in mak- ing, varnishing and otherwise preparing the mammoth erial ship. Tuz Latest Sensation at Sanatoga—A Handsome Young Nephew Proves to be a Gentleman's Mistress.—A correspondent at Saratoga writes the following jip:—A gen- tleman of wealth and respectability from Sew York city—a married man—came to Sarat with a young man whom he introduced to friends as “Charley, his nephew."’ Charley wasan amazing good-looking young fellow, about eighteen years old, with black eyes and rosy cheeks, and adash of frolic about him that won him troops of friends. The ladies were all in love with the little fellow, while te men were ready to die of envy. He dancea elegantly, and talked love with all the ardor of a passionate soul. When in the society af men he was more than ever entertaining. He spoke of pit comers cat ieee with the utmost sang-froid. He had loves at Sarato, and at Newport; on the peaks of the White Mountains, aud away down among the planta- tions of the South. In fact, crinoline had vse caeer gare a Charley was « spendt . He was p of te wenet, and wine in abundance was brought at hiscommand. He insisted u ing for it all, and could tip goblets with hh bat of then. But one day Charley drank more than his usual allowance. He beeame unusually communicative; he said things, vot the least strange of which was that he was a woman! Charley was correct; he, she, or it was a woman, and the mistress of the wealthy New York gentleman, who fur- nished the “‘speiter’’ with which Charley was enjoying Saratoga life. The discovery of “my nephew's’ sex necessitated a flight te other uarters, and it is more than likely that the da man and Charley are enjoyi at some other watering-place. Sta WASHINGTON. D.
