THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON CITY: SATURDAY. -+ August 25, 1860. Spirit of the Morning Press, The Constitution argues at length that the con- testin the present canvass is bétween the friends of the Constitution as represented by Mr. Breck- jnridge, and its enemies as represented by Mr. Lincoln. ‘The Intelligencer publishes and comments upon couple of political communications. ee - 7” The New York Republican nominees for electors at latgé are Wm. C. Bryant and James O. Putnam. 0" * Long John” Wentworth, Mayor of Chi- eago, has gone to Montreal to invite the Prince out to the Prairie State. New Music.—We have received from Metzerott & new song by R. Topliff, entitled “Nota Minute to spare;”’ also from the same, ‘The Old Brown Cot,” song and chorus; poetry by E. A. Darley; music by Edward Clark. Both are pretty. U7 It is said that so many buffaloes have been killed on the Western plains, for mere sport, that the stench from the carcasses Is, in some places, almost insupportable. What a commentary on the self-arrogated humanity and nobility of man! iF" Wehbave received from Mr. Ben. F. French, across the way, two donble medallion likenesses, one of Messrs. Breckinridge and Lane, on reverse sides, and the other of Messrs. Bell and Everett. They are all most excellent portraits, and should be possessed by the adberents of the parties res- pectively. We understand that French has a few more left of the same sort. [> It seems that another rumor had been started that Mr. Breckinridge had called acon sultation of his friends to decide the propriety of withdrawing from the presidential contest. Mr. James Coleman, of Memphis, wrote to Mr. Breck inridge concerning this canard, and received the follewing emphatic answer: Lexineton, Ky., Aug. 17, 1860. James Couzman: There {s not’ a word of truth in it. Joun C. Brecxinaines. I> A writer in the New York Post proposes that instead of feting or dining the Prince of Wales in that city, his countrymen and others ‘who chose should unite in erecting an elegant drinking fountain in some suitable place, and in- vite Lord Renfrew to lay the corner-stone. This, or some public memorial of the visit like it, which would be enduring, and associated with a great Pablic convenience, in which the masses of the people would have a special interest, it is thought would be in better taste, and much less likely to result ia mortification on the part of the citizens, and disgust on the part of their guests, than any- thing which has yet been proposed. Dr. Hamlin, a miss! ry of the Amer- ican Board, wes to leave Constantinople on the 14th ult. to revisit his native country. Dr. Ham- lin is a brother of the republican candidate for the vice presidency. Watxer’s Exrgpition Picayune has the following relative to Walker's late sapiett in capturing Truxillo:—“ Gen. Wil- liam Walker, of whose expedition to Nicaragua we have before had accounts, made his appearance before the town of Truxilio, Honduras, on the 5th instant, and took possession witbout serious oppo- sition. Only one gun was fired by the troops sta- tioned there. by which ‘two of Walker’s men were wounded Walker then entered the town The New Orleans and took possession. The greatest excitement lied. The — of this attack upon Trux- fic isunknown. We only know that the expedi- tion sailed from the island of Cozumel, on the ‘20th ult., as supposed, for Nicaragua direct. Sub- sequently to its departure we ha intelligence of the capture, by the British, off Honduras, of the schooner Clifton, one of his little transports, and of ber being taken futo the Belize. Whether now, after learning of this seizure. Walker subse- quently turned his course to that coast, to recap- tare the vessel. or whether he had originally in- tended, as first stated, to land at Truxillo and make Els way througts Honduras to Nicaragua DY land, we are left to conjecture. We only know this in addition, that at last accounts from the main land, the British fag was still flying on the forts at Truxtiio. pee ESS ee Aransas Evection.—We at length have relia- bie returns of the recent clection in Arkansas, by which it appears that Henry M. Rector, independ- ent rat, has been elected Governor by a ma- jority of probably three thousand votes over R. H. Jobnaon, the regular nominee of the Democratic For, Congress, the Hon. Thomas C. Hindman has been re-elected from the first district over Jesse M. Cypert, Whig; and F. W. Gantt, Independent jocrat bas been elected in the second district over Charles B. Mitchell, the regular Democratic nominee. The majorities for the successful can- didates for Congress are large in both the districts See reepersene dopiencnte Acca val Intelligence. The sloop Plymouth, commissioned by the Navy Department asa practice-ship. received on board one buadred and fifteen miashj and sailed from Annapolis on the Ith June, bound to Norfolk. After — at that place, she anchored in Hampton Roads, from whence we departed the afternoon of the 27th, beating our way to seaward. All hands eagerly availed themselves of the pilot's services, and he left the ship with a huge bag of letters,—many to sweet-hearts, and more, I think, to the “g folks at home ;’’ but after bis de- parture we had no offers, and this is the reason why I have delayed writing to thi: me. We were fairly out to sea the morning of the 28th, and all seemed delighted; but soon the naval tyros began to feel uneasy, and numberiess visits ‘were mede to the lee-ganyway, which isthe resort of all midstipmen troubled by the imperious de- of Neptune Nearly all were sick, but a continuance of good ‘weather restored them to life, and they imagined themselves, without doubt, forever free from such duns, but a few days proved that a ‘- man may be sea-sick more than once The i Fourth” came on a delightful day, but sun Was fated to leave us plunging rolling as a drunken man, under very little sail. We were compelled to reduce the suip’s canvas to a single storm-stay-sail, close-reefed matn-topeall, and? main-to; 1, but even with this sbe would run seven ang knots. A very heavy sea was re: and the water was rising most uncomfortably fast in the pump-well, while the ag absolutely refused to draw Severai Went to work at them with a will, and after two hours of well directed efforts, they came back to their duty in such a ap maanner that we were soon It was well calculated to make a man feel , and { bear from good authority that the Captain had determined to turn zbout on bis wake and seek the Chesapeake, couid nothing have been done with the wpps in half an beur more. [Editorial Correspondence of The Star } (No. 22.) August 22, 1860. ‘Tux New Sza Barnine Prace—Poir Looxovt Descaisep ix Detait—Its Baraine, Fiswine, anp OvsTERIne ADVANTAGES—Its Constant Devicious BRgszEs, AND ITs AGREEABLE Vis- ITORS FROM THE NEIGHBORING CouNTY—Wasa- INGTONIANS HAVING A Hick OLD Tm Tuxas, &e. . I came down here a day of two since upon the steamer Baltimore, (incomparably the fastest, most commodious, and best steamer plying in the waters of the Potomac,) in order to see and judge for myself concerning Point Lookout’s capabilities for becoming what those interested in it claim that it is destined not long hence to become—s leading sea-bathing point, if not the one most resorted to from all quarters of the coun- try. I confess that] have been very agreeably disappointed/in my expectations, which did not ren pari pass with the glowing accounts of the bathing and air here. The Potnt itself ig’a sand shoal, on much of which there has ually come to be sufficient soil te sustain a large grove of thickly studded trees, quite fifty feet high, with here and there single trees of as large proportions, growing out to the site of ite light-house, on the extreme end, immediately where the waters of the Potomac enter the Chesapeake Bay. From that point the peninsula, running beck, gradually widens, and upon the first quarter of a mile from the extreme point, all the watering-place Improvements have been built. These consist of a portion of the large hotel originally designed to be built here, sofficient (as far as already constructed) to accom- modate a hundred and more guests with comfort- able sleeping apartments, with halls, parlors, ball-room, and dining-room sufficient to accom- modate a company of seven or eight bundred visitors. Also, one hundred and six cottages, built by the company, (but now the Property of individuals,) wherein fall four hundred guests may find comfortable quarters. And, besides, two or three cottages built by individuals more expensively and elaborately than those mentioned above. The landing is at present made at a substantial wharf erected npon the Potomac side of the pen- insula, though ere the opening of the next season ® similar wharf will déubtless be erected upon the bay side, to enable the magnificent line og steamers plying daily between Baltimore and Norfolk, Va , to land passengers conveniently on all their trips up or down the bay. Immediately at the rear of the first half mile of the peninsu! point, the agricultural settlements of St. Mary’s county, Md , commence. The land there is very fertile, and is the property of wealthy proprietors, the juniors of whose families are much given to driving down to the Point nightly, in parties of from a dozen toa hundred, and takjng part in the festivities occurring among the guests there as regularly (except on Sundays) as night draws her curtains around the hotel and cottages. These Marylanders, besides being * well-to-do set of people, add greatly to the pleasures of society at the Point; as they are a frank, refined, and chiv- alrous community, as much devoted as any Others, the world over, to the pleasures of the table, the dance, and social intercourse generally. I find the bathing and the air of Point Lookout incomparably better than those of any similar Place resorted to on the Atlantic coast, that I have 80 far visited. ‘That is to say, the visitor can at all times choose between surf bathing on one side of the extreme point.and comparatively smooth-water bathing on the other side, not more than a hun- dred yards off; for, blow as the wind may, or set as the tide may, there is always a surf on one side and smooth water on the other. At Cape May, at Atlantic City, Rockaway, Fire [sland and Long Branch, the surf is so great and the sand of the beach so fine as to annoy the bather greatly by sand-filling ears, eyes, and hair not unfrequently which does not occur at Point Lookout, as its beach sand is much coarser and heavier. Nor is there the slightest und w at Point Lookout, where the children of Weitors are many of them permitted to bathe with impunity, without the assistance and care of those older than themselves. So we shall never hear of bathers at Point Look- out being swept off into the ocean by the under- tow, which occurs annually at one or the other place I named above; last (a few weeks ago) at Atlantic City, when two gentlemen were thus burried without a moment’s warning, into watery graves. The beach everywhere at Point Lookout is equal to any inthe world, extending much further out into the Bay than elsewhere, and thus adding greatly to the safety with which one may bathe here. lam told by visitors who have been here since early in July last, that they have not experienced a single warm day or night, nor have they felt the bite of a musquito or gnat; no land breeze having brought such annoying visitors to the Point. At Cape May last year, 1 was for a time well-nigh devoured by them, and at the same time well-nigh blinded and choked by the dust of the parched soi! immed‘ately back of the vil- lage made up of the hotels and watering-place shops and other adjuncts. Point Lookout must forever be free from such annoyances, insomuch as blow from what quarter the wind may, the breeze must cross broad expanse of water be- fore reaching the Point. I find other very considerable advantages pos- sessed by Point Lookout over any of the similar Places I name above. Thus, there are a multitude of safe fishing grounds and oysterinz coves.in its immediate vicinity, not surpaszed in the world ; nor can crabs, hard and soft, be more easily caught and in greater abundance anywhere on the continent. I may also mention that the shoot- ing here is the best | know of slong the Atlantic coast. Curlews, gray backed and sand snipe being just now in such abundance tbat one of the guesis addicted to gun and dog, often brings home fifty birds after a forenoon’s shooting. In all, some twelve hundred guests havealready visited this place this Season, by stenmer, snd as many from the immediate back country—three hundred having been here at one time, not long since; so the existence of Point Lookout as a watering place bas been fairly inaugurated; and as all who have been here g0 away with opinions with reference to its remarkable advantages such as | express above, there will doubtless be a tre- mendous rush upon it uext summer. Both ladies and genticmen bathe at all hours of the day, relishing the invigorating sport most keenly; probably because of the remarkably bracing influence of the air by which they are surrounded, always 80 cool as that the guest fond of fishing may set for hours at mid-day, without umbrella, under the sun’s glare, without experi- encing the usual discomfort‘on such occasions. At present there are not :nore than fifty visitors bere, almost all of them from Washington and its vicinity—a sociable and supremely happy set of people, indeed, who think of nought else but bathing, boating, dancing, fishing, reading, shooting, and chatting. Care sits on no brow at Point Lookout. I am the only discontented per- son bere—and | am discontented only because lam compelled to leave by to-night’s boat for Washb- ington, by the demauds of the interuinable busi- ness of the daily newspaper. By the by, oa Tharsday next a grand tovena- ment comes off here. Some twenty knights (riders) from the back country have already entered for the pilce. They area fine-looking set of young inen a8 now seen, practising, a hundred yards from where I am writiug.
