U7 The work of taking the census of Phile delphia will not be completed for several weeks. the operation being a tedious one, in consequence of the great number and variety of questions asked. None of the wards have yet been com- Pleted, but It is thought by those having charge of the returns that the population of that elty will exceed 650,000. The census-takers report a nuin- ber of persons that have passed their 100th year, the oldest one being 117 years of age, and still in tolerable health. In nearly every ward People of 100, 105, 106, 110, ete., have been reported. A re- markable circumstance attending the taking of the present census is the fact that scarcely an American bas been found that cannot read or write. —_—____. Nevertheless, the price of wheat continues to rule very low; the result of a determination on the part of the heavy operators to compel the farmers to take low prices if possible. It will be remembered that from the moment the last Wheat crop began to be sent to market until it was nearly all gotten out of the farmers’ hands the price ruled low, and then, for nearly three months before the recent harvest, it was up to from $1.50 to 1.75 at least, for good white wheat. From a fortnight before the recent harvest to the present time the price has again been low. The cOnse- quence is that no farmer is senting his new crop to market who can poisibly avoid doing so. As far as we have been able to learn, not five hun- red bushels in all have been sent tothe Alex- Andria market this season, though two hundred thousand bushels could have reached there quite as easily as the five hundred, if the price offered was encouraging. The fact explained above em: braces proof that the fermers usunily shipping to Alexandria are prosperous generally. Else, they would be compelietl to sell their wheat for what- ever they can get for it, as nine farmers out of ten in the great and over bepuffed Northwest neces- Sarily do, year by year. We believe that those who hold back whent this year—that is, while the dealers show Bo little disposition to operate in the stapte—will profit most. The crop is short, fhe world over; and unless American wheat gluts the home market for the time being, the price in our Atlantic cities must come up, through offers to fill foreign orders. The farmers’ danger in this region of the Union lies in the necessities of the agriculturists of the Northwest, and only in those necessities. The price of flour—the retail price—by the by, is by no means as comparatively low as that of wheat—by no means; which means that the dealers themselves anticipate that the staple must soon rise in price. The millers are complaining that the wheat does not come for- ward. They can command the delivery of as much as they may require immediately, by making even a few purchases of the new crop at Prices in proportion to what they ask for flour made of new wheat. aes Se Tue Hives.—The committee headquarters in this city of the four political parties are just now Swarming with industrious bees. From fifty to hundreds of exceedingly interested gentlemen are laboring with great assiduity either in each of them, or elsewhere in Washington, in connection with their (the committee's) operations. This work for dear life, as it were, of course looks for ultimate reward in the way of office, or something of the sort. There is no telling the aggregate amount of trash they are all flooding the country with in the shape of electioneering publications, the cust of which, and its transportation, of course, comes out of ‘‘ the dear people,” in whose behalf such labors are essayed nominally. Our experience has satisfied us that quite three-fourths of the elec Noneering documents spread broadcast over the land tbus, once in four years, do far more harm than good to the community. Nevertheless, so long as the revenues of the Government continue tobe regarded by the mass of the people as so much plunder, to be distributed quadrenially to those who strive hardest to clutch a share of it, so long will the evil of the wholesale dissemination of L—g aspersions on all the parties, and of pro- fessions never designed to be carried out, continue to increase, canv. ss after canvass. GENERAL Apatuy seems to have command c¢ the forces of all the different parties engaged in the existing Presidential contest. In the whole course of our experience in such matters,we never before saw so little interest taken ina national election. On the Republican side, none save the office-seekers and professional plunder-mongers appear to care the toss of a copper for the result; while on the Democratic side the existing split bas evidently paralyzed the enthusiasm which in every previous national contest up to this time bas marked the efforts of that party. The Union Party, so aptly named the “old gentleman’s party,’ exh! bit in thecanvass the moderation and caution amounting to almost non-action for their cause, which one naturally expects from persons far past the meridian of life. On the whole, the canvass is far more tame and uninteresting than ever before in the work of making a President of the United States. a ee Our City.—Few strangers are now here, and nearly all of our resident population who annually seek cooler places than Washington at this season are off; some to the mountains, and others to the sea shore. Nevertheless, Washington city is now buster and brisker than we ever before knew it at thisseason. We judge of the fact by the de- mands new being made upon the Star’s adver- tising columns and its city circulation—both being far greater than ever before except during the Congressional seasons.
