Viz: On the accession of the present Administration Mf. Douglas assumed the right to dittate to Pres- ident Buchanan, not only his appointments, but his policy, and was atonce given to understand that the Chief Magistrate of the United States did any reversionary interest in it that Mr. D. con- ceived to be his own, of right. Wherenpon that gentleman at once commenced, and has ever since waged, an uncompromising war upon, first, the President personally; next, upon his Adm!nistra- tion; and, subsequently, on the Democratic party and its policy; which he has steadily kept up until this hour In this war he has enlisted the der-monger in the land, and every constitutional ‘sympathizer with such cHaracters, of whom none are nore conspicuous than the honorable Reverdy Fa EES aforesaid; such politicians forming the head and weenie ete re ange a v a” Lega front of the Douglas organization in every State 1 on um! in the Union. Among them, they have spent, it may be, a. cool half milllion from first to last in their efforts to accomplish their putpose of obtain- ing free quarters upon the U.S. Treasury by means of brenking down the present Administration and elevating Douglas to the chair of Buchanan. Douglas bimself has contributed every doliar he was worth in the world and every penny for which-he could “ raw his face’? among his friends and admirers, to thatend. He is not only now worth perhaps a hundred thousand less than nothing, though commencing his war on Buchan- an and the Democratic party, a little millionaite; but he has induced handreds of his followers, long befgre bankrupt in character, to bankrupt themselves pecuniarily in their etforts to sustain him. Together, they have kepthere a little army of contributors to the distant press, and have sub- otned every professional telegrapher in the land to be reached by bribery. They bave also bouzht upa host of worthless venal newspapers in all quarters of the Union, more or less of which have, each, cost him and them from one to twenty-five thousand dollars. Though a gentleman who would himself surely spurn a bribe if offered to him, such is Mr Jobneon’s notorious kink, as that he cannot beip sympathizing with any parties or party engaged in efforts to make the biggest Pos- sible baul from the Treasury of the United States A recollection of the various published papers from his pen in advocacy of or apology for various Operations upon the Treasury against which the public mind revolted, though he could not see their anoastroaity, will, without further words from us, Serve to enable all to comprehend that he takes to ‘Dougiasismm simply because he “‘naterally’? can't help it. Those who know him well, however, are aware that he is a high-toned gentleman, ineapable of entertaining in his own breast the desizns notori- ously actuating those into whose political com- pany he has some how or other fallen. Yet that he should have fallen into such company at last, will strike not a few as being but the natural result of his chronic federal idiosyncracy, that one should rightfully sympathise with all pro- posing to deplete the Treasury of the United States.
