THE EVENING STAR_ WATERING PLACE CORRESPONDENCE precy ¥en Wate Sutpuur Sprives. Greenbrier Co., Va., June 29, 1860. Editor Star: Do not for a moment suppose that your correspondent could pass thro Charlottesville without observing with inter- est Virginia's renowned University, or un- moved by stirring and powerful emotions and thoughts of its illustrious founder and bene- factor, whose honored dust reposes within the cerements of that consecrated tomb in the oes of bis own loved Monticello? No, ANever! My mind was busy all along over the millions of broad acres of the Old Domin- ion, from the Potomac to the Blue Ridge, with the long and crowded array of reminis- cences and incidents connected with the Colo- nisl and Revolutionary annals of the noble old Commonwealth. And as the vast—yet still to be lengthened—scroll of her distin- uished archives, emblazoned with heroic er was unrolled before me, and then went up in review from out the silent past that long procession of stirring events, and brilliant achievements, of acts, deeds, and sacrifices in the cause of patriotism and liberty—the mind pondered reverently upon the splendid record of initiatory steps towards separation from the motherland, taken and ur; by the patriotic colony in the House of Burgesses, and Hall of Independence. In the Provincial Assembly, her chivalric sons roused to determined action by the impetuous and fiery exordiums and harangues of Patrick Henry; and upon the floor of the Continental Congress, her young and rising statesman, chairman of the great committee, supported in his solemn proclama- tion of now world-accepted truths, by the chaste and finished rhetoric, and the polished, silvery eloquence of Richard Henry Lee. And methought that if my own New Hampshire may boast her Webster, Mason, W. bury, Atherton, Cass, and Pierce, Virginia too can point to her precious jewels—to George Wash- ington, Thomes Jeffersen, Henry, Lee, Pendle- ton, Wythe, Peyten, Randolph, Madison, Mon- roe, William Wirt, and Henry Clay. And my thoughts conjured up the handsome Young surveyor, with quadrant and memoran- dum in hand, he determined the ‘“‘metes and bounds” of, perhaps, some of the same acres and sections over which, in unconscious scorn of those hallowed thoughts, and with the speed of the wind, the iron horse—then undreamed even in most wandering and prophetic visions, was hurrying me swiftly forward. And as the flitting mile-stones passed uncounted to the rear, the correct and truthful youth of nine- teen, advanced a few years in life, is again seen—the God-preserved commander of the decimated squadrons on the blood-baptised field of Monongahela. Then, the mature and ripened General-in-Chief appears, as riding along in our classic Cambridge beneath those ancient elms, coeval with the Pilgrims land- ing, he was accosted in the gloom of thicken- ing twilight by ‘General from the right bank of the Potomac;”’ the response of Dan Morgan to the Chief's challenge, “What com- pany is that?’’ as at the end of his long foot march from home the veteran rifle ranger drew proudly into line his command of picked men from old Fredericksburg, in salute to his surprised and delighted commander. Once more I looked, and saw the trembling scales of liberty goup and down amid the shock and carnage of battle on Prineeton’s smoking plain, as the waves of defeat surged against his heated and exhausted battalion’s, and as reckless of his own life, and roused into towering, terrific wrath at culpable ne- lect and cowardice, and possible treachery, £ spurs his frantic charger up almost to the very mouths of Britain’s advancing cannon. And yet, once again, my teeming thoughts revert to the old Legislative Hall at Annap- olis, where that pure, unselfish, perfect man, patriot, warrior, hero, statesman, resigns his command, and tenders back his commission to the Confederated Congress, whence he re- ceived it, and this too, when supreme power and rule seemed proffered and urged upon him by the millions of his grateful and con- fiding countrymen. But he gives up his trust, and in recent language of Lord Brougham concerning the great man, ‘that their rights may be conserved, and that his example might never be appealed to by vulgar Piao ELLIAMED. Hyexia Hote, Oup Pornt Comront, Jane 28, 1860. ‘The hot weather of the last few days has driven several hundreds from the scorching heat of tne city to this favorite summer resort. At every arrival the visitors are pouring in. Bat there is ample room for hundreds more. Since the close of last season, a large addition bas been made to the buildings, which, with the improvements made the year before, add largely to the accommodations. Some altera- tions have been made also in the older portion of the buildings, which add most materially to the comforts of visitors. Among the improvements which | area strike the eye are the generous planting out of trees in all parts of the Hotel unds, and a neat inclosure of all the grounds appurtenant to the Hotel, including those recently ted to the proprietors by the Government. The Hotel has never been known in finer order. The management of the Hotel is in charge, this season, of Mr. Caleb Willard, a brother of the Messrs. Willard, of Washington city, who is now @ partuer in the concern, and to whom the senior partner, Mr. Segar. has, on account of the junior partner’s proficiency in all that relates to the business of the landlord, willingly transferred the general superintendence of the establishment. f Mr. Willard, the new incumbent, is a gentle- man eihevee address, gentle nature, obliging spirit, a ows exactly “how to keep a hotel.” I find (as a visitor) no departure from the high standard adopted for the last four years in the management of the Hotel, and, from personal observation, I may safely assure those who would revel in the delightful recreations of the seaboard, that the Hygeia was never more attracting. Rir-Raps. As Aprectine Scene.—Not many years since (says Frazer’s Magazine) certain miners, working far unde: came upon the body & poor fellow who had perished in a suffo- cating pit forty years before. Some chemical agent to which the body had been subjected— 1 agent —— in the laboratory of nature— had effectually arrested the progress of decay. They brought it up to the surface, and for awhile, till it crumbled away through exposure to the atmosphere, it lay there, the image of a fine sturdy young man. No convulsion had passed over the face in death; the features were tranquil; the hair was black as ji No one recognized the face; a ion had since the day on which the miner went we uj Sean shaft for the last time. But a totter- ing old ——_ tay tages hurried from her me at hearing news, came up, and she mow — face poms al sere years s! never quite it. e miner was to have been est husbend the day after that on which he died. Fim! were r people, of course, who were looking on; ai! eral education and fine feeling are not deemed essential to the man whose work it is to get up coals or even tin; but there were no dry eyes there when the grey-headed old pilgrim cast herself upon the youthful corps, poured out to his desf ear many words of endear- ment, unused for forty years. It was a touch- ing contrast—the one #0 old the other so young. ey had both been young these long P eed before; but time bad gone on with the living and stood still with the dead. ~— Eben ver, XVI. The British Getting Pious all at Once.— Proclamation by Queen Victeria. A late number of the London Gazette con- tains the following Royal Proclamation “for the encouragement of piety and virtue, and for the preventing and punishing of vice, pro- faneness, and immorality,” issued on the 9th ultimo by the Queen of gland : = BY THE QUEEN. Victoria R.—We, most seriously and reli iously considering that it is our indispensable duty to be careful above all other things to Preserve and advance the honor and service of Almighty God, and to discourage and sup- press all viee, profanity, debauchery, and im- morslity, which are so highly displeasing to God and s0 great a reprosch to our religion and Government; to the intent, therefore, that religion, piety, and good manners may flourish and increase under our Administration and Government, we have thought fit, by the ad- vice of our Privy Council, to issue this our Royal Proclamation, and do hereby declare our Royal purpose and resolution to discoun- tenance and punish all manner of vice, pro- faneness, and immorality in all persons of whatsoever degree or 'Y within this our realm; and we do expect and require that all a of honor, orin place of authority will give good example by their own virtue pay mad and to their utmost contribute to the discountenancing persons of dissolute and immoral lives; and we do hereby strictly en- join and prohibit ‘all our loving subjects, of what degree or quality soever, es playing on the Lord’s day at dice, cards, or any other game whatsoever, and we do hereby require and command them, and every of them, de- cently and reverently to attend the worship of God on every Lord’s day. Our further plea- sure is, and we do hereby strictly charge and command all our judges, mayors, sheriffs, jus- tices of the peace, and all other our officers and ministers, ecclesiastical and civil, and all our subjects whom it may concern, to be very vigilant and strict in the discovery and effec- tual prosecution and punishment of all persons who shall be guilty of dissolute, immoral, or disorderly practices; and that they take care also effectually to suppress all public gaming- houses and places, and lewd and other disor- derly houses; and also to suppress and prevent all gaming whatsoever, in public or private on the Lord’s day; and likewise that they take effectual care to prevent all persons kee ing taverns, or other public houses whatsover, froin selling wine, beer, or other liquors, or receiving or permitting guests to be or remain in such their houses in the time of Divine service on the Lord’s day. And for the more effectual proceeding herein, we do hereby direct and command all our judges of assize and justices of the peace to give strict charges at their re- spective assizes and sessions for the due pros- ecution and punishment of all persons that shall presume to offend in any of the kinds aforesaid, and also of all persons that, con- trary to their duty, shall be remiss or negli- genj in putting the said laws in execution; and that they do at their respective assizes and uarter sessions of the peace cause this our oyal Proclamation to be publicly read in open court immediately before the charge is iven. Given at our Court at Buckingham ‘alace this 9th day of June, 1860. — ee A Census-Taking Anecdote. In endeavoring to take the census for the Government, the marshals occasionally meet with such difficulties as well nigh to deprive them of their own senses. The fliowing took place in Canal street, New. Orleans: ‘‘Who is the head of this family?”’ “That depends on circumstances. If before 11 o'clock it’s me husband! if after 11, it’s meself.’” “How 30?” “Because afther 11 he’s as drunk as a piper, and unable to take care of himself, let alone the family.”” “What is his age?” “Coming nixt Mechalmas he will lack aday of being as old as Finnegan. You know Finne- an?’? : “No, I don’t know Finnegan; and if I did, it would not help the matter. Is your husband an alien?”’ : “Och, thin, he’s ailin’ intirely. He has the rheumatics worse than owld Donnelly, who was tied double wid ’em.*’ “How many male members have you in the family? “Niver a one.”” ‘What, no boys at all?” “Boysisit? Ah! murther, go home. We have boys enough to whip four loaves of bread for breakfast.’’ “When were you married ?”’ “The day Pat Doyle left Tippirary for Amer- icy. Ah well I mind it. A sunshiper day niver gilded the sky of owld Ireland.” “What was the condition of your husband before marriage ?*’ “Divil a man more miserable. He said if I did not give him a promise within two weeks he'd blow his brains out with a crowbar.” “What was he at the time of your marriage, a widower or bachelor ?”’ “A which? A widower, did you say? Ah, now go way wid yer nonsense. “Is’t the likes of me that would take =P a second hand hus- band? A poor divil all legs and consumption, like asick turkey A widower? May I niver be blissed if I’d rather not live an owld maid, a bring up a family on buttermilk and pra- ties.’ Here the dialogue ended, the Marshal com- ing to the conclusion that he could “make more”’ next door. Whether he did we will know at some fiture time. Inrerestixe to Housexeerers.—As eral rule it is most economical to buy articles. True, the boldest and forwardest may find a cool place on board the boat, where they won’t broil; or a shady spot in the grove when they reach it; and a nibble of a cake, or a sandwich and a draught of lemonade; but for the /ittle shy things who would cook to a cinder before they would com- plain of the heat, who would starve before they would say that they were hungry and faint, and had been overlooked in the distribution of “goodies,’’ who have no talent for grabbing, and would be trampled to death before they would even squeak—what of such? There may be male and female excursionists who don’t go on such trips to pair off for flirta- tions in umbrageous groves, and let the chil- dren take care of themselves; there may be adult pic-nic-ians, who see that the children are properly fed before they satisfy their own hunger, and who; in the absence of their a rents, feel responsible for their not tumbling into the river, or being sunstruck; let us fer- vently hope—in anticipation of all the forth- coming festivals of this season—that there are; but our own private opinion and independent belief is that “the dear children’’ on these oc- casions come out the little end of the horn, and that horn—nos the ‘horn of plenty.’ Fanny Fern. re MRS.
