WASHINGTON NEWS AND GOSSIP. oe Porvtan SumMzn Resonts.—The Warrenton White Sulphur Springs and Point Look-out evi- dently bid fair to be resorted to by large numbers of our fellow-citizens this summer. The former is now the sole property of Mr. Hudgins, of Vir- ginia, a gentleman of wealth, remarkable enter- prise, and great fame for his knowledge of how to live well and agreeably. He keeps the Springs this season himself, and will doubtless strain every nerve to restore to the establishment its fame as one of the finest watering places in the whole Union, whick, all know, it enjoyed twenty years ago. The buildings, now as then, continue to be the best for such a purpose in the United States, THE EVENING STAR. 7 That valuable and popular family journal, the Weaxty Sraz, full as usual of Metropolitan news and gossip, and choice literary reading, is ow on our counter ready for delivery to the pub- Me. New Publications. ** Letters of Alexander Von Humboldt to Varn bagan Van Ense, from 1887 to 1558 ; with extracts from Varnhagan’s diaries and letters of Varnhagan and others to Humboldt. Translated by Freder- ick Kapp. New York: Published by Rudd & Carlton, 130 Grand st. 1860"—a welcome addi- tion to our library, indeed. In point of positive utility as a contributor of valuable knowledge to the world’s stock of it, Humboldt was really the greatest man of the nineteenth century—society having been most indebted to him for its progress of the last half century in the acquisition of prac- tical information concerning the physical sci- ences. He was not only by long odds the most earned man of the nineteenth century, and per- haps its most useful man, but the friend and inti- mate of men in every walk in life who contribu- ted to man’s advancement, intellectually or so- cially. Despising the friendship not even of the most humble laborer in the cause of learning or Progress, he was equally the friend, companion and adviser of many of the crowned heads of Europe who appreciated the responsibilities of the several trusts of power devolved upon them by circumstances. He was thus equally as well posted in what may be termed the society of the times, as in the contents of the volumes lining his best private library itn Europe The private thoughts and views of such a man, upon matters occupying his mind from day to day, therefore, must necessarily possess absorbing interest to the Public. These letters, translated by Kapp, are his correspondence with his most intimate friend for nearly balf acentury; the man fa“ hioned, men. tally, perhaps most after his own order. It bas been objected to this book, that it strips Humboldt’s memory of the charin that he was not frail—human—like other men, with which a grateful public on both sides of the Atlantic had almost come to regard his character. That is to say, that he was without the passions, prejudices, and weaknesses, more or less of which have ‘warped in a greater or less degree the sentiments and character of every man yet born of woman ‘That it proves him to have been an atheist in his Private sentiments concerning religion, and sen- ‘tentiously bitter, if not vituperatively sarcastic in his confidential expressions concerning more or’ less persons, to not a few of whom, the world well know, he was greatly indebted for Patronage, favors and acts of personal liberality and kind. ness that contributed greatly to secure for him the remarkable series of ‘opportunities’ that enabled ‘ihim to be so useful to his race, and thus to become 80 deservedly renowned. We cannot accept the opinion of those who reason thus; notappreciating any substantial reason why the world should not at length learn that Humboidt, besides being the greatest man of the century, was also its most astute—successful—courtier; and further, that thongh a persistent and very effective inculcator of the better philosophy of Curistianity for the sake of its best-of-all-influences on the Individual human mind and society at large, he himself Fejected its immutable truths. However much ‘we May mourn over the fact, we cannot Perceive why a knowledge of it had best have been kept ee the kee truth in this connection iy goes another proof that Perfection of character is now, as always, denied to any mere ‘haps. Our young fellow-citizen, Mr. Logan O. Smith, under whose auspices Point Look-out has recently been opened, is really one of the best hotel keep- ers in the Union—never failing to give entire satis- faction to his guests. There are said to be already some hundreds there, from Maryland and Vir- ginia principally, luxuriating upon the good things for the inner man afforded by the generous Chesapeake and Potomac, than which no other bay and river In the world afford so great a variety of delicacies apropos for the season. The air and bathing there are unsurpassed by those of any sea- side summer resort. Our reports from Point Look-out tell us that its guests are having a glo- rious time on’t. pe eee Tux Gexexat Lanp Orrice.—We apprehend that the concerns of this important branch of the Government’s business at this point were never in so satisfactory a condition as at present. That is to say, the details of the duties of every clerical desk in it have been brought up to date, and its every account with its agents at distant points are now invariably squared monthly; by which means the state of its finances are to be ascertained ata glance, and all of its many official correspondents are compelled to keep no larger balances in their hands than the law allows; a very desirable in- surance against such defaleations on their part as have not unfrequently occurred in the history of the conduct of the bureau's business in former years So much for placing at its head itspresent commissioner, Mr. Joseph S. Wilson, who, man and boy, bas spent a lifetime in its service, which he entered as, perhaps, its lowest messenger, to become, step by step. at scarce middle age, the head and front of its affairs. —— TRaNnsveR oF GoveRNxENT BuReats —On Monday next, those employed in the Pension Bureau are to remove from their old quarters In the fourth story of Winder’s building to the north wing of the Patent Office, which has just been completed, and comfortably titted up for the Bureau. There are abvut seventy clerks con- nected with this department of the Government, and they will occupy twenty rooms—ten on the first and ten on the second floor. The rooms of the Commissioner and Chief Clerk, which are opposite each other, have been tastefully and elegantly arranged. The Census Bureau will likewise occupy rooms in this end of the building. ‘The officers of the Light-house Board have also been transferred from the third story of Winder’s building to suitable apartments in the Treasury Extension. ee eee Tus New Frenxcu Minister —On the fourth instant Mr. Henry Mercer was introduced to the President by the acting Secretary of State, and delivered his credentials as envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary of bis Majesty the Emperor of the French to this Government. The date of his presentation could not fail to cali up interesting associations, which, we are not sur- prised to learn, were happily alluded to by the President in the remarks which he made on the occasion. a Tre Paciic Mains —It is stated that the Gov- ernment is considering measures whereby the California mails may be. transported by naval steamers. As the weight of Pacific mail matter is aton anda half for each day of the year, the idea of its transportation across the continent by land seems impossible. It is said that the Panama Railroad Company and the Pacific Mail Steam- ship Company will co-operate with the Govern- ment steamers between New York and Panama. ——— Arrointment oF Cuize Justice ror Utan.— Jobn F. If our school system isa good one, show some interest jn it; if it isa bad one improve it, or abolish it. At the conclusion of the examination, Mt. He then introduced to them the Rev. Mr. Roby, who closed the exer- cises and dismissed the school with benediction. We bad almost forgotten to state that that good and persevéring friend of education (Mr. yde) was present On Wednesday night last, at a late hour, Police Officers Drill and Rebinson discovered smoke issuing from the small frame house on Potomac st , directly opposite the cotton factory. The cause of the fire was not ascertained, but it was probably a case of spontaneous combustion. There was a harmonious meeting of the Demo- cratle Association last evening, which was rather slimly attended. After the transaction of the ordi- ere business, there was an adjournment for two weeks.
