THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON OITY: WEDNESDAY. -see-Jume 27, 1860, Spirit of the Morning Press. Y.; Rev. E. W. Tue WHErxapocts OF THE Lats PostMasTER. The New York Post says: ‘The morning papers contain a story of the identification of Postmaster Fowler at Pike’s Peak, where he has said te have passed by the name of Achille Drance. This story is wholly fabulous, as are all of the many others relating to the whereabouts of the late Postmaster, except thatone which represents bim as having gone to Cuba. Whatever reports may be circulated to the contrary, our readers may rest assured that Mr. Fowler isin Havana. We have seen a private letter from him to a friend in this city, dated “flavana, June 13tb;" and the Hayana correspondent of one of our German papers, some days since, mentioned having met him in the streets of that city Harpsn Conresses —The Rev. Jacob S_ Har? den, under seutence of death for the murder o! his wife. has made a confession acknowledging his guilt. The Rev. Mr. Day, of the ME Church, announced, at the Union Prayer Mecting at bis church at Belvidere, the fact of the confes- sion, and desired the prayers of the meeting in bebalf of the condemned and penitent cr minal This announcement caused a great sensation in the church. The Rev. Mr Kirk made a touching and feeling prayer in his behalf, after which the congregation united in singing the beautiful bymn commencing with the words, “Just as | am, without one plea ” Gov. Olden has respited the execution of Jacob S. Harden for one week and a day, bringing it to Friday, the 6th day of July. The Trenton American states that Harden is even now writing his confession, and that he has communicated certain portions of it to the jailor and one or twootbers. The administering of the = to bis wife commenced on her return to amsey’s, and was given to her while sitting on his knee even during the endearments of an appa- rently loving husband. He kindly tovited her to partake of an apple on which te had spread arsenic. She unsuspectingly ate it, remarking that it bgp to bave something gritty on it He replied that it was -pothing’ There are statements said to have been made by the prisoner, involving his criminalty with others who shared his affections, but we do not think it proper to Speak of them until Harden chooses to make them ublic himself. His purchase of the arsenic at aston, his us: ing that which was about the house, are all confirmed by Harden’s own words. What {3 most astonishing is the statement that in the Perpetration of these enormities Harden does not Seem to have the slightest compunctions. He did them without for once thinking that he was doing anything very dreadful. WASHINGTON NEWS AND GOSSIP. —_—e—— Ix Tux Srectal Sxssioy oF THE Sanats, yes- terday, the attendance of members was about as large as usual. The only business submitted was call for information by Mr. Hale in regard to some of the post offices of the United States, the delivery of letters by carriers, and the use of boxes. The usual committee was appointed to wait on the President of the the United States and inform him of the readiness of the Senate to receive communications, and the standing com- mittees were continued asalready organized. On Mr. Bright’s motion, the Hon. Benjamin Fitz- patrick was appointed to preside in the absence of the Vice President; and, on Mr. Mason's motion, an Executive session was held. The resolution offered by Mr. Hale was to the effect that the Postmaster General be directed to ascertain and report to the Senate at an early day next session the number and names of the post offices where letters were delivered by carriers for the year ending June 30th instant, the number of letters delivered, the number of persons employed as carriers and their respective compensations; also, the number and names of all post offices where box rent is collected; the aggregate amount of rent thus collected, and the rate per box charged at each of said offices respectively; also, whether any, and if so, what extra charge is made at any of the post offices for depositing in the same box letters for more than one person, and the maxi- mum rate thus collected for a single box. That it be also ascertained and reported whether the practice exists at any of the post offices of distrib- uting and delivering letters to box-holders prior, in point of time, to the distribution and delivery of letters to non-box-holders; and whether the practice exists of neglecting to deliver letters to the persons to whose care they are directed, and if it does, the cause of such practice. gi A Remarxas_e DemonstRation.—Among the most noteworthy features of the occurrences in Baltimore last week, was the intensity of the manifest repugnance of the Democracy of that city to Douglas, his followers, and their cause. It was seen plainly by all calm observers, ‘in “the Square,” every night throughout the week. With three magnificent bands of music, and a large body of outsiders from a distance playing the part of claquers all the time, the Douglas orators were utterly unable on any occasion to command a crowd half as large as thatwhich thronged ‘the Square’’ in front of the Gilmor House, from which the friends of the Democratic party’s cause spoke every evening. All who Were in ‘‘the Square’’ necessarily made the com- parison; for the marked difference in the two audiences was plain to all. That Baltimore’s Democracy, with great unanimity, regard Doug- las and Douglasism as traitorous, was indeed thus made evident to the most casual observer. By-the-by, Mr. Reverdy Johnson, in smelling around to pick out a popular political lodgment in his old days, has evidently made as signal a mistake as when, with more youthful ardor, he adopted Federalism to the same end. He is, emphatically, politically, a Monsieur Mal-apro- pos; being now as incapable of comprehending the philosophy of the instincts of the people, as when he sought to take advantage of them by being an active Whig leader — Tue Exscetive Session of THE SENATE Yesterpay.—The business of the session, we understand, was exclusively contined to the con- sideration of treaties, and resulted in the ratifi- cation of the Extradition treaty with Switzerland, and those of commerce and friendship with Bolivia, Venezuela, Honduras, and Nicaragua In that with Honduras is a transient privilege, to which, however, but little importance is attached. The Nicaraguan treaty was amended so that the American military force cannot be used, without the previous assent of the United State Congress, for the protection of the transit and other pur- poses. There was no marked contest as to any of these treaties, which were ratified by nearly a unanimous vote The President nominated to the Senate Judge Wm. F. Russell as Navy Agent at New York, in place of George N. Saunders, removed. a , EXxaMINation oF Mipsuipmen —The board of Naval examiners, Captain Buchanan at the head, of the remaining portion of the class of Midship- men who graduated in 1557, have made their re- portto the Navy Department. Anxiety concerning the fate of the appropria- tions for the Washington Aqueduct and jocal works, and interest in the result of the Ba more Convention, or rather Conventions, kept our citizens on the gui vive for a week or more, and furnished them exciting subjects for disc’ * but are now settling down into their state of quietude. Itis that the President will rest satisfied with the vindication of himself and rebuke of Congress contained in his protest, and not- visit his indignation upon the poarie of the District for an act which was not theirs, by withholding or nullifying the aj priation for the water works. This would ict great injury upon us; and if such a serious calamity is thr; ened, the citizens of our two cities ought—by public meetings or memorials—do their best to avert it. The canal wears a lifeless aspect at present, and is neither useful nor ornamental, navigation having been interrupted for some yg reak near dam No.4. Weare indebted fo Mr. Soper, the collector here, (a polite and accommodating entleman, whose appointment we noticed in Exvorabie terms some weeks since,) for his kind- ness in showing us a letter from Mr. Stake, su- perintendent at the point where the break oc- curred, dated the 19th inst , in which it is stated that ‘boats will be detained about one week from this date in consequence of a break at Marsh Run Trunk, three miles below dam no.4.” We confidently expect that boats will commence to arrive on Monday next, !f not earlier, and it will be quite brisk here again, as it is stated that 160 boats at ieast are detained at the break. The stock of coal cc lents pas is tigre Secreestag, the shipments being nearly up to the average, bu no pos are entertained of its being exhausted e more arrives. n regard to the break mentioned above, it is currently reported here that it was caused by the ignorance or neglect of one of the newly instalied capers of the present board, who left the yates raised at the dam for the purpose of ‘feeding’? the level, and went off home to a. Theriver rising in the night, overflowed the level and caused the breach. If this is so, it affords another illustration of the evil effect of these constant changes of officers on the canal and other public works because of their political opinions, with- out regard to fitness. If it is not so, it will afford us more pleasure to record the contradiction than it does to report the rumor Have any of your readers ever witnessed the operation of bottling effervescent drinks ou a large scale? Those who have not, can have no concep- tion of the dexterity attained by the operators in that business. We happened inat Arny & Shinn’s establishment a few days since, and were aston- ished at the rapidity with which the bottles were filled with mineral water and corked. Botu these operations are performed at once, it were, by a most ingenious machine, otberwise the gas would escape This machine, with the attend- ance of a skillfal operator, will fill 600 bottles in an hour, one ata time, being six seconds only for each. Three boys are in attendance, who, as the bottles are ready, seize them with a peculiar pair of nippers made to clasp them round the neck (the bottles, not the boys) and at the same time keep the cork in its place. The expertness of these boys is the most surprising part of the pro- cess, aseach cork bas to be tied down with two teces of twine, crossed on top, requiring two Ristinct wraps and ties, the cord being cut each time, end care taken that thecork keeps its place during these operations; and yet the time occu- pied with each bottle is only Is seconds on an average. They also have some experts in this es- tabl shment who will bottle off ale and porter—s10 bottles in an hour, or 14 per minute. We were informed that the proprietors intend soon to in- troduce to the public a delightful summer drink, which they call ‘‘sparkling Catawba soda water,”’ and which is likely to supplant the ordinary ” “« Do not forget the pic-nic of the Dumbarton-st. M.E. Sabbath School, at Analostan [sland to- morrow. To those who attended the crowded concerts of this school last wi nter, it will be suf- ficient to say that they will have an opportunity of hearing the music repeated in the open air; to those who did not, we have to say that the noted Singing of these children is well worth the price charged for a ticket, even if there was no other attraction.
