Warte Sucracr Sprixes, ) Greenbrier Co., Va., June 22, 1860. Dear Star -—The conclusion of No. 1 jeft me high on the top wave of an inspiration about mountain scenery, and among the glo- rious peaks of the Blue Ridge. Indulge me now in a digression to remark— here in the centre of this great State—this venerable and honored mother of Presidents and statesmen; of Washington, ot Jefferson, Madison, Henry. and Lee—that unlike most Northern writers who journey into this splen- did bat slandered not deem it incumbent on me to relieve my mind of any special elaborate opinions and disquisitions upon the question of slavery. jough born and reared in a New England State, I have never, since I began to read his- tory or polities, been particularly exercised, nor made myself unhappy in this regard. But T have endeavored to look at the subject from # philosophical, rational stand-point; and I have discovered, what all who are not struck with judicial blindness may see, that some manifest, unmistakable system of slavery, bondage, vassalage, or peonage, pervades all ancient Biblical history. eye down over the buried centuries, have cerned similar systems and institutions in all ages, from the gray dawn of the Creation to the present era. And my mind has long since anchored — the irresistible, immovable conclusion slavery—of subservience of one portion of the human race to another—form a part of the creat woof of God’s economy. And that when- ever this great system shall be changed or pass away, it will be by His agency and deeree, od not at the dictum, or as a result of the efforts uch political reeusants and lofty.tumb’e s as the Republican Viee Presidential nominee. The transit of the Blue Ridge is by three aceessive tunnels, the last a stupendous work, even-eighths of a mile throuzh solid rock, and emerging gladly from the drear passage. we descend the western slopes, and obtain views of the great Allegany tier of mountains, between which and the noble range from whose wiamantine embrace we have just escaped, lies spread out before our admiring gaze the Valley of Virginia The course is now through thousands, tens, hundreds of thousands acres of excellent land interspersed, though less frequently than the eastern sides, with farm-houses and villages. The route from the fine town of Staunton, eixty miles onward to Jackson river, among spurs of the Alleganies, whose heavil timbered sides have yet to find profitable de- velopment in the use of the immense masses ef wood for futare lvcomotives, and in new markets for lumber when the iron track finds its farthest terminus at the Ohio river. From Jackson gjver forward the road is partly graded, but State enterprise is pro- verbially slow, and it is predicted that twelve may elapse ere the ery of the brazen 1 resound through these secluded nd awaken his shrill echocs among vallies, these beautiful mountains. The route is now along the wild and rough banks of the James river, whose rocky bed is boiling and foaming with the mad rush of its turbid mountain waters. For the majestic storm clouds which shadowed our pathway scross the Blue Ridge. now scattering their treasures of rain and hail far away over the great plains hundreds of feet below, and anon wheeling in their course, Sweeping up mountain sides, and dashing their cry: drops, the Hed evanescent and fleeting as the morning mist, in pattering showers upon our moving reofs and windows—did not pass over the pres- ent line of travel without disbursing liberally from their surcharged reservoirs. Halting at the “Dry Creek House’’—we opine that the name is suggestive of the ab- sence, during the summer solstice of those tumultuous mountain torrents in the channel of the adjacent stream—certainly not of any lack of thirst assuaging liquids, judging from the array of licen: bottles upon the counter, and the activity of the young Creole behind it. But please to consider your correspondent srrived at the White Sulphur. The visitor to se celebrated springs is impressed with the grandeur of the primeval forests. The moun- tain, short mile tothe east, and so finely shaped, is densely covered with the kingly monarch—oak—reigning in regal splendor, and with almost undisputed sway, and gor- geous in his summer robes of brightest green. And here we note a feature in forest scenery we have never witnessed elsewhere; nor do I remember ever to have seen it in print Stripes or veins of black, some running hori- zontaliy, and others in an oblique direction. from base to apex, woven into the beautiful web of nature by an Almighty hand—are con- spicuous along the entire length of this d: ¢ ick- ed and strayed member of the great range This remarkable, but lovely appearance, dark lines or channels of an otherwise wn- varying foliage of green oaks, is caused by ridges or swells upon the face of the mountain en which the growth is the ‘cloud-seeking pine’’—though here the tree is less towering in its ambition; and the picture is indescrib- ably beautiful. But it is such a weird group- ing of forest drapery of opposite colors that You need the touches of a master hand to en- able your mind to form an adequate concep tion of this strange, but charming view ELLIAMED ete Noste Sextiwents —This is an agreeable world after all. If we would only bring our- selves to look at the subjects that surround us in their true light, we should see beauty whe e we beheld deformity, aad listen to harmony where we heard nothing but discord. To be eure, there is a great deal of vexation and unxfty to meet: we cannot sail on a summer coast forever; yet if we preserve a calm eye and steady hand we can so trim our sails and manage our helm, as to avoid the quicksands, and weather the storms that threaten ship- wreck.
