MisiLMert, 26th an ve ee ee Harpex, rae Mcaperer —A letter from Easton to the Phillipsburg Standard gives au account of the writer’s visit to Jacob S. Har- den, now in the Warren county jail for the murder of his wife, for which he is to be exe- cuted in about two weeks from this time. ‘He was perfectly calm, easy and deliberate. I do not see how he could have appeared any differ- ent ifhe had been acquitted, and we were sit- ting in his own father’s house. He was un- willing to say much with regard to the crime of which he is convicted, or his trial. He would listen to my questions, and then anawer such as he pleased; some he declined to answer, on the ground that it might work to his disad- vantage if he should have a new trial. He thinks he ought to have a new trial, butif he does not get it, he firmly believes the Governor will reprieve him a short time beyond the day now fixed for his execution. If no reprieve is granted, ho says it will not only be injustice to him but an outrage upon society. I asked him if he still felt resigned to his fate. He said, “Yes, [ am resigned to my fate, whatever it may be. If I amto die, I am resigned to death. If my sentence is commuted to im- | Pirpescapiat for life, [ am resigned to that f L am pardoned, I am resigned to that; still,’’ he immediately added, “even then my life would be a burden to me, as I have been the subject of all the newspaper doggerels for the last fourteen months.”’. He conversed freely and fluently upon general subjects, and things indirectly connected with his case. He was very lively and merry, and laughed heartily sometimes at remarks and Suggestions of his own about others. I was very far from being even cheerful myself, though I must confess his apparent strange indifference to his dreadful conditions, his easy off band manner, would make me almost forget for a moment that I Was conversing with a man who was doomed to die on the scaffold as a felon, in three weeks. coin employed at the of the Assistant Treasurer, can deteot the che: The ten-dollar piece under this man- agement loses about $5.50 of its gold, and remains equally good for general eirculation. The fact that this is done at all. the opera- tion continued, is proof that it is carried on upon @ large scale; for the exquisitely fine macbinery, and the skill and science necessary to success, could not be profitably employed except in the conduct of an extensive business. The pieces are full weight, and except through the wondertul instinct of here and there a rare expert, they cannot be detected, as they answer all tests that do not involve the breaking or eutting of the coin There must be at this moment a large num- ber of them on deposit in our banks, and in almost every full bag of coins one or more of these, or other similar frauds may be discov- ered, while the number of bad pieces offered at the Sub-Treasury has sometimes amounted to fifty or sixty dollars in a single package of five thousand. The counterfeit and fraudulent silver coins are also increasing. The greasy lead or soft composition quarter dollars any one may detect; and a portion of the lead half dollars are of the same stamp. But more recently a composition piece has been uttered, which rings well, does not feel smooth to the touch, and can only be detected by careful testings. Its exact ingredients are unknown, but the weight is made up by a percentage of platiua. The in- creased abundance of the las med metal has added very much to the facility with which these operations are conducted. Formerly, if & piece offered as gold was of full weight, with no increase of size, the fair inference was that it must be genuine. Platina first came into use about the middle of the last eentury, being found in considerable quantities in South America, and since it has also been discovered in Russia and other parts of the world. In color it nearly resembles zine, but it is heavier than gold, its specific gravaty being 21.5, while gold is only 19.3. To facili- tate the understanding of this subject, we may remark that in addition to these two metals the others usually employed in these coinage ope- rations are—mereury, which weighs 13.5, | 14.4, silver 10.5, copper 9, and zine about 7: that isthe bulk of the metal displaces that number of times of its own weight of water. It is easy to see that as platina is worth so much less than gold, while its specific ravity is grester, it ts certain to be employed in all suc- cessful frauds, where the weight is essential In counterfeits of silver it is sometimes added in small quantities to give both weight and consistency great day’ The wounded se Drunkenness in Londen It is a long time since we have read a more appalling description than that which is found in the London Times of the 19th ult. It relates to a certain a of the northern side of London, and has reference to the vast amount of drunkenness, debauchery and Profanity and other kindred wickedness which reign in that part of the *-Great Metropolis;** and not more thore, we apprehend, than in some other parts, if we may judge from our own obserya- tion, made at frequent visits to that great ¢ and of the scenes which we have beheld in some streets we have a vivid and most painful reminiscence Let us imagine some native of the sober South taking, about 10 o'clock last night, an observant and rambling walk through the streets of London, making his way deviously {om the region north of Holborn, and bent upon witnessing the proceedings of the British Legislature. Here is a record of some performances of the wife of Sir Wm.
