In one of the lower districts of the Palmetto State, there once lived a family of six or seven Persons, who were known far and wide as the “ugly family.’ One of them, Jake, was so ibe argo hard favored, that it made one feel as if he had bitten a green persimmon te look at him, and whenever he walked the Streets, the dogs slunk their tails and sneaked of, too seared to bark. The fame of the family spread through the eountry, and at last reached the ears of a Georgian, who for a long time bad held undis- ted possession of the celebrated pen-kuife. nis individual at —— determined to Pay a visit to the ugly family, and endeavor to dis- se of the aforesai So one morning i crossed the Savannah, and about noon, he saw a wagon ahead, and rode up to inquire the whereabouts of the family. “Hello, str: rt” said be toa man walking by the side of the wagon. “Hello, ~ ‘the wagoner. turning round and disclosing a countenance §0 tremendulously plain that the Georgian almost dropped from his horse. oy say,’ said the Georgian, recovering a little from the astonishment, ‘‘are you not ugly Jake’ himself ?’’ é ‘he wagoner shook his head and ‘‘grinned a ghastly smile’’ that made him look like the night-mare personified. “Ill bet you ten dollars that you are the ug- liest man in the State, the Georgian. “Done'’’ said the wagoner, ‘come here.” And going to the back of the wagon, he called, “Wake up, Jake, and put your head out here.’ The Georgian, burning with curiosity, leaned forward as the cover was raised slowly up Suddenly his eyes fell upon a physiognomy so wfully, boundlessly, overpowe! ly ugly, that it seemed to be formed out of the double extract of delirium tremen’. The horse snorted and started back in fright, and threw his rider over his head, but the lat- ter had scarcely touched the ground before be was mounted again. Throwing down the ten dollars and his pen-knife without saving a word. he ‘struck a bee-line’’ for the Savan- nab, looking alternately over each shoulder as long as the wagoner remained in sight. — e+ Derreciatios oF Down-towy Property 1x New Yorx.—The correspondent of the Boston Commercial Bulletin, speaking of the rapid depreciation of down-town real estate in New York, says: Below Wall street, it is safe to as- sert that real estate is not worth one-third what it was ten years ago. For example, the large, old-fashioned dwelling and lot, corner of Morris street, for several —— occupied by Spofford, Tileston & Co., and others, was sold a few days ago for $12.000. The lot alone sold for $100,000 ten years a On the opposite side, and near the same Tocality, a store and lot which a few years ago were valued at $100,000, sold about a week since for $32,000. The old Atlantic Garden property, opposite Bowling Green, embracing two full lots, and running through to Greenwich st., is to be sold on the 24th. Rents in the same portion of the city, have depreciated in proportion. Stores, which formerly rented for $10.000 a year, can now be had for $3,000. On all the side streets leading from Broadway, the change is even greater, the stores fast passing from the peases- session of the larger to that of smaller dealers Of course, what Baggpoen lost here in value, is more than compenSated by the large increase in the value of up-town property, as there is a rfect stam n that direction. Messrs Whitlocks. the est wholesale liquor deal- ers in the city, who, about two years ago, erected # very large building at the corner of Beekman and Nassau streets, have advertised their store to let, and they will move up Broadway—‘following the hotels.”’ Claffin, Mellen & Co., who cecupy Trinity Building, and are the principal owners, have purchased an entire block in Worth street, between Charch and West Broadway, on which to erect their new store. When complete, this will, probably, be the largest store in the world, having a front of 375 feet on Worth street—fif- teen full lots—each of which are 80 feet deep. We hear no more of the “opening of Albany street;’’ and the sleepers in Trinity Church- yard, as well as the patriotic (?) monument erected so recently to commemorate their deeds, will have a new lease of repose 2 How 1t was Doxe 1x Arkansas. —The re- cent brawls in the House at Washington remind us of a story we once heard in Avkuaaan sev- eral years since, which has never been in print. It is no espect to the present enlightened and gen ‘ate of Arkansas to say that in its incipient or territorial days it was rather “rough.’’ It was avery common thing for a man to leave the bosom of his family in sound health in the mornivg and return dead at night. Cuttings, slashings and shootings were of daily occurrence. It was dangerous to be safe. The Legislature was chiefly composed of bullies and blacklegs, and the scenes enacted by them were often very eccentric. A fight arose about something in ‘‘the House” one ye The Hon. Mr. Bange-, of Napoleon, called the Hon. Mr. Slanger, of Helena, a liar. The Hon Sianger retorted with a bullet, which took off the Hon. Banger’s leftear. Both then sj rang into the centre of the hall with drawn bowie knives. The Speaker said “‘ By G—d, we must E have fuir play in this business '"’ and rushed out into the floor with cocked pistol in one hand anda tremendous “‘toothpick’’ in the other, and in tones of thunder commanded the representatives to form a ring. A ring was formed, and the classics of the times, the combatants ‘wentin.’” They cut each other frightfully, and for quite a spell it was difficult to decide who was the better man. But finally Banger, by an adroit thrust, cut off Slanger’s head. and instant death was the result. Mr. Slanger’s remains being removed and order restored. Mr. Banger arose and said, «It is my inful duty to announce to this House the Seath of the Hon. Wm. Blanger, of Helena. He was at draw-poker and faro, and hendied the toothpick beautiful. He was'’nt of no account at legislatin’. He was middlin’ on hosses. He put on too manyscollops. He had no famil: an his brother Bill, the pager tt Red river.
