Last week the sister of Stephens visited him in his cell, and im- plored him to seek the conselations of religion, but he has rejected ail the advances of the minis- ters cf the Gospel, preferring to die in his epirit- ualist opinions. Stsrexvep.—The last number of the Nationa, Era has a card from Mrs. Bailey, announcing the Suspension of that paper for the present, it nop being a paying concern. It is rumored that the direct cause of its suspension is the failure of the Republican party in the House to give that paper its printing patrcnage. The Washington Re- public will also be discontinued, it is stated, and the attempt made to establish 2 new Republican paper in this city upon the Era and Republic subscription lists. Tae Cnarisstoy Convention.—The Wash- ington correspondents of the New York papers state that the pressure has become so great upon the National Committee for a change from Charles- ton to some other place, for holding the Democrat te Convention, that the Committee hasdetermined to hold a meeting with a view to considering the subject. Lvery section cf the country is com- plaining cf the threatened extortions. Fifty dol- lars per day will be charged for the use of parlors, and everything else in proportion. The National Committee agreed to pay $250 per day for the use ofa public hall. If backed up by the Demecracy of the different sections the Committee will change the place of meeting, perhaps, from Charles‘on to Washington. W hy not? ————_—_—_$ Personal. ~ -***Hon.
