[From the Springfield Republican } The separation of Mr. Burch and his wife at Chicago, on the ground of adultery by the lat- ter, attracts much attention on account of the social position of the parties. Mr. Burch is a wea tiy merchant, and bis wife is the adennet daughter of Erastus Corning, of cory 6 rhey have been married twelve years and have two daughters. The wife signed a writtenconfession of her ns, but she now alleges that it was ex- torted from hor by violence. She has returned to the house of her foster parent, who has em- | mg eminent counsel for her defence. Opin- ons differ as to the guilt of the wife, but the general belief at Chicago is that an improper intimacy existed. The London Times in discus- sing the elopement of the young and rich Mrs. Gurney with one of her servant men, attributes her fault to the settlement of her estate u herself, thus leaving her independent of her husband. It states that in a large number of privately arranged separations, recorded by an eminent London lawyer, in the space of forty years, inevery case but one, the wife hada provision independent of her husband, and in almost every case the wife was the wrong-doer. The statistics of the London lawyer may be faithful to facts so far as they go, but they do not touch the secret of the matter atall. If wives having property in their own right are more likely than others to leave their husbands, it only indicates that there are many more who would escape the ties of matrimony if they could, and are only held to their allegiance by hard necers ty. If so, the facts are an argument for separate settlements for wiver, rather than against them, unless we hold that woman should be bound where man is free We do not know the facts, the secret unwrit- ten history in the Burch case. In that of Mrs. Gurney in England, there was a disparity of age, and the husband, absorbed in business, left the wife to seek such companionship as she might. What wonder that a young, educated and capti- vating servant man, eonstantly about her, and giving her daily the graceful attentions so ac- ceptable to the heart of woman, should have found it easy to win herlove. Perhaps her mar- riage had only been a matter of business and vonvenience, like too many aliiances in high life, and her love for the servant was the first awakening of the tender passion within her. So the people of Manchester felt, and sympa- thised with the young lovers, guilty as they were in the sight of law and conventional usage. In u great many of theso cases we should blame the wives less if we knew their secret history. It is their duty to “suffer and be strong,” ‘and many are the wives who ful- fill this Nerd duty, whose secret sorrows the world will never know. Nay, the husband himself is often unconscious of the silent pain which eats out the heart of her he loves, and which he might remove and would if he were aware of it. Many a husband thinks that he Tulfills all the duties of the sacred relation, to whom the wife looks in vain for that intimate sympathy and affection which every woman requires. The life of woman’s heart is love. She instinctively craves it, and is desolate without it. Respect and studied deference will not answer asa substitute for it. There must be in the real sacrament of matrimony a tenderness of love, a fondness, a mutual inter- change of delicate and sensitive regards, which language fails to express, but which every man and woman that has truly loved instinc- tively understands and appreciates. With too many men this manifestation of the tender passion ends with courtship, and mar- riage brings only cold respect and fidelity— better a thousand times of course than unfaith- fulness and estrangement—but not satisfying to the highest demands of the heart. The man, engrossed with business, who comes to his home chiefly for food and rest, does not feel the need of love like the wife, restricted to a narrower circle of cares and occupations, and ‘driven in upon her own thoughts fur solace. What wonder that the woman, thus robbed of the effection she craves, by him from whom it is due, opens her heart to tho sunshine of another's smile, and accepts the delicate at- tentions from ‘he friend, that the husband de- nies or neglects? What wonder if friendship sometimes ripens into love, in such cases, and the wife finds her heart completely gone from her busbard to another before she had sus- pected the danger? We do not helieve, with the London Times, that the fault is generally on the part of tho wives. The original fault often lies with the husband. The neglect of the husband is often the beginning of the evil. The busband is bound not only to love but to “cherish” the wife. If she is left in poverty and desolation of heart te seek elsewhere the love ber nature requires, let not the husband consider himself the innocent and injured party. He may have been faithful, but he should heve been fond, and thus the love of the courtship and the honeymoon would have deepened and strengthened as the true pair “clomb the hill thegither,”’ and there would have been no room there fi interloper. Sa ——— A Bax Scoorep Out By TH D—Moyery PLYING ix THe StREETS.—A little before two o'clock this afternoon, an accident of a singu- lar and exciting description happened at the banking office of Armstrong, Spink & Co., on the northeast corner of East Water and Huron Streets, in Croas’s building. The wind has been blowing a perfect hurricane at times to-day; aod at this time, just as a person was enterin; the banking office, a tremendous gust of win came up, and the door being open, a current of wind rushed in and burst through the win- dows on the Huron-street side, which, forming a vent hole for the wind, it poured in tremen- dously, bursting in the front windows also, and completely gutting the office almost instantly, Sending the money and papers lying on the counters flying down Huron street, hile the large glass windows were broken into a thou- sand pieces, and the curtains flapped from their fixtures and were slit into shreds, while people were rushing out from adjoining stores and shops, on hearing the din and clatter, fear- ful lest some terrible accident was happening. It is impossible to tell how much money was blown away, but probably seven hui dol- lars, besides some valuable business pay rs, &e. Boys and men went scrambling down Huron sireet after such as they could get hold of, and in a few minutes half of the Third Ward almost was out hunting up stra; one, five, or ten dollar bills, as the case might be. Much of the money has been returned by hon- est finders, but still a good deal has been car- ried off by eset faa others who found it, and will probably be salted down by the finders We never saw a place scooped out more in- stantaneously and completely than this was. Almost everything in the office was swept out into the streets, znd the place was made a per- fect wreck. There were five large windows, all of which were smashed to smithereens. A few individuals were flightly cut by the glass, and as the contents of the office were whisked out into the street, some teams passing at the time got frightened and ran away.—Milwau- hie Wisconsin, March 3. - Kirsh ue ee | . The Pope yesterday visited the college, said mass, and administered the communion to the students. Having heard of the honor about to be conferred upon their young countryman, many American Catholics had expressed a desire of also re- ceiving communion from his Holiness—a re- quest which was readily granted. At 8a. m. the Pope arrived, and, attended by a portion of his noble guard and b: relates of the awti-camera, proceeded ‘igh altar, where he soon commenced mass. He was assisted by the Rt. Rev. Dr. Bacon, Bishop, of Portland, Maine, and by the Rt. ir. Goss, Bishop of Liverpool. The time for the communion having approached, the students of the new college knelt around the altar, and from the hands of his Vicar re- ceived the blessed sacrament. students of the Propaganda next enjoyed the same privilege, followed by many of the visi- ters, the majority of whom were Americans.
