THE EVENING STAR. Tae Wreck of the Steamer Huvgarian. [From the Yarmouth (N. S.) Tribune.] ‘The ill-fated steamebip ts reported to have been seen by a coasting vessel off Liverpo-l about 6 p. m.on Sunday, the i9th ult., apparently steering N.N.W., ich, unless she were at a distance of at least twenty-tive miles from the coast, must have been nearly four points off her true course. At three o'clock on the following morning, a man named Barry Nickerson, residing on Cape Sable, descried, exactly in the direction of the reef known as the “Horse Race.”’ what he took tobe the lights ofa steamer. These lights when first seen were stationary, and remai immovably in the same position, as our informant thinks, for more than half an hour, when they a] red to move very swiftly in a northwesterly direction, and in the course of ten or fifteen minutes became once More stationary. Mr. Henry Nickerson, who re- sides on Fish Island, states that he first saw the light in the porition which the wreck now occu- pies, at four o’clock, and comprebending that some unknown vessel was in distress, aroused his ‘son and a neighbor, crossed in a fishing skiff the inlet which divides the island from Cape Sable, and. in the hope of attracting the attention of the ere xhibited a lighted lantern from the high- ost nt of land that could be found. ‘the lights of the unknown vessel continued to be visible until daybreak, when they disappeared probably in consequence of the fail of the mast to which they were attached. As day dawned the hull of a large steamship was discernible on the “Great Rip,” a dangerous ledge about two miles southwest of Cape Sable, the foremost gone, the mainmast, mizzenmast and sinoke pipe onl rtanding, and the s°a making a constant breac’ overtheship. The riguing of the mainmast bad the appearance, according to the staternents of our tnforman 8, of being crowded with human be- ings, to the number of between fifty and ay = supposition we see no resson to discredit. About halt as hour after sunrise the — was seen to »verboard, the sinoke pi, ‘BY red soon aterestis: and the mlzcensrast fol. peal about tena m. The spectacle described by those who witeessed It as one of territic grandeur—the sea around white with breakers, the doomed sbip rolling heavily, as surge after surge broke against heriron sides, the spray dashing in volumes to tue height of ber masthead, and the billows pour- ing in ceaseless entatacts over decks. The violence of the sea during the morning and ‘the carly part of the day wasso great that no at- tempt could be made to approach the ship. Not even a lifeboat, it is attirmed, could have been got with safety through the breakers which en- vironed the coast. At9a.m. the wreck began to break up, and the surface of the deep was soon strewn with k- ages of ligbt goods, the lading of her upper deci. The ebb trde, aided by a strong westerly wind, rarried these articles for the first few bours in the direction of Baccaro, and into the bays and inlets beyond. The floodtide, for the next few hours, carried whatever was wasted from the wreck in ‘an opposite direction. On Tuesday, the wind having moderated, and the sea being compara- tively smooth, a great number of boais and sev- eral small vessels put off in search of the drifting merchandise. Between four and tive hundred boats, it is computed, were for the first three or four days eugaged in this manner. The bales being generally of a size which precluded their being taken into a boat, were broken open with a few blows of an axe, the contents lifted on board. and the box allowed to go adrift. The quantity of goods thus saved must have been im- mense; but the wide dispersion will render the task of collecting them for sule rather a formid- able undertaking. Several of the mail bags of the Hungarian were picked upon Tuesday. znd one or two others on the following day. These were taken charge of by the magistrates, and have ere nuw been for- warded to Halifax. A boat of about tifteen feet keel, with the oars lashed, drifted into Port Latour, bottom up. Other boats, shattered to eces. bave been seen floating in the vicinity The yunwale of one of them was picked up by Captain Cook, of the schooner Melrose, on Satur- day. One of the masts came ashore at Shag Harbor, and another at Fish Island. The latter spar has still attached to it a portion of the plate iron by which it was cannected with the decks. ‘Phe ouly bodies yet found were that of a man, su: to have n one of the firemen of the sbip, which was found at Shag Harbor, and that of a female child, about two years old, which was washed ashore at Stony Island. inquests were held on bota these ies, and both were decently interred. The report that tue body of a man had been discovered at Cat Point, near Bac- caro, is without foundation, as is, also, we hope, the statement that the corpse of an infant, picked up at sea, was consigned aga‘n to the deep ny the owner of the boat, in his eagerness to secure the tempting prizes with which the surface of the water at the time was covered. e OPERATION OF THE SHOEMAKERS’ STRIKE ON Betcusr Boys —It is snid that the butcher porters of Newburyport have struck for an advance of from two to three cents a basketful for carrying Leme meat and provisions from market. Some of the market men have agreed to the demand. The strike was caused frinelpally by a fear that as the price of boots and shoes had advanced. the porters would be unable to with those articles unless t! wages. Ho 5 &DER.—At Cincinnati, on Wed- nesday, an Irishman named Patrick McHugh, approached his wite whilst she was at a friend’s house, placed his arm around her neck and cut ber throat with arazor. The stroke was given with so much power as to cut away even a part of the vertebrae. The woman died almost instantly MeHugh had recently been tiberated from the penitentiary, where he had served a sentence for a dead!y assault upon his wife. {[J~ The House of Representatives of Louisiana on the 2d instant tibled, by a vote of nearly three to one, a proposition to remove the seat of govern- ment of that State from Baton Rouge to New Orleans. 17 Ersex county, Mass , bas contributed 32 for the Mount Veriion Funds, besides amoun’ poe themselves y received more re. —— through Hon.
