eta THE EVENING STAR. Axox@ TRE stories told of the canvassing in Paris for the seat in the French Academy, made vacant by the death of De Tocqueville, is the following by the Boston Traveller's cor- respondent “4 lady, one of the most beautiful women in Paris, warmly advocated Father Lacordaire’s claims to the vacant seat, intending her elo- quence for the car of an eminent member of rhe Academy, who happened to be in the room. In conclusion, she directly appealed to him to give the friar his vote. He replied: ‘Georgi- ana, Duchess of Devonshire, the most beauti- ful and intellectual woman of her day, took a most aetive part in the canvass for Charles James Fox. In her zeal for the eminent ora- tor, sho even went so far as to solicit in person the votes of the humblest freemen. She was of the greatest service to the Whig party; her winning beauty, her rank, and the splendor of her equipage. made her indeed an irresistible advocute. In the hight of the canvass she appealed to a butcher fur his vote. He said she might have it if she would allow him to kiss her. She accepted his terms. He kissed her. Fox got his vote.’ The advocate of Friar Lacordaire understood the apologue, and, holding out her cheek to the celebrated. but very ugly academician, said: ‘Take your price!’ The bribe was instantly taken. Fi- nally, the Rey. Father secured his triumphant election.” ANGLoPHoBIA Ix Spary.—In a letter to the Times, ‘-A Traveller in Spain” says : “It is searcely possible to give you an idea of the bad feeling towards England pervading all ranks of society in this country. An English- manin Marciaa few days ago asked his way to the cathedral of a Spanish gentleman, who most courteously conducted him. On reach- ing the door the sacristan was not to be found, and the Spaniard kindly offered to go for him, but doubted his coming, as it was past the usual hour. ‘Tell the sacristan,’ said the stranger, ‘that an Englishman does not ask people to work for nothing.’ ‘English! the hitherto courteous Spaniard, ‘Eng! ou? then I shall not stir astep for you. Tho english are all bad. I hate them/all.’ Re- monstrance wasuseless. The debtis the grand offence. They publish their own version of the English claim; they suppress all explana- tions; they call the English government dans, usurers, &c. Then, again. they affirm thatthe English are helping the,Moors with men and money; and I was told lest night, with the utmost gravity, that when they have done with the Moors they intend to give England a les- son: Nearly every newspaper teems with furious leading articles. with sarcastic letters, with raked-up calumnies against the English, and, of course. so much poison uncounteracted must produce its effects.’’ UF The late trazedy in Pittsylvania county, in Virginia, in which the Witchers and their friends, and the Clements and their friends were engavred, and in which three of the Clements’ were killed outright, and several of the other party Wounded, has created, it is said. the greatest excitement in the counties adjacent to that In which it occurr: as well as in the immediate neighborhood of residence of the rties concerned. ‘The i acquittal ofthe Witcher party, howeve that the fanit of commencin the aifray w; the side of their foes Sen a UF The decision of the Lord Chancellor and Lords Justice has confirmed the dec ree of Vice Chancellor Wood, which declared the bequest of the late John Shakspeare to be void. ‘ue de- clared object of the bequest war the formation of ® Shakspeare Museum in the house where Shak- Speare is said to have been born, atStratford-upon Avon.
