(From the London Times. Feb. 6 } Yesterday there were three services as usual at Si. George's Church, the last of them—that at 7 o'clock—being of so A: ‘eros a character, that none whe had the misfortune to be pres- ent will ever forget it. The rioting was most alarming. The violent conduct of the rioters completely eclipsed their efforts on the previ- ous Sunday, the circumstances connected with which have been brought under the notice of both Houses of Parliament. By 6 o'clock the people began to assemble for ‘the evening service. Cannon street road was almost impassable, and when the gates were thrown open there were at least 4,000 people anxiously waiting for admission. The rush was terrific, but no accidents of any kind are reported, owing to the admirable tact with which the police, who were stationed outside, managed the mode of admission. There was no refusal to ‘suspected’? or other persons, and all who presented themselves were lowed to goin, until the church was so de ly packed that it could hold no more. No sooner had the congregation assembled than howling and yelling of the most andacious kind was commenced, and wascontinved with- eut cessation until the priests and choristers walked in procession to their accustomed places in frontof thealtar At this time a perfect storm broke out, cries of fire were raised, in order to cause dismay, and some of the gas lights were simultaneously turned out. Mr. Churchwarden Thompson. upon whom the whole of the constabulary arrangements inside the church devolved, obtained the as- sistance of some of his friends, and forcibl ejected some of the riagleaders among the ri- «ters from the church, leaving them, when t-ey were thrust outside, to be dealt with by the police. At the time for reading the les- sons, the Rev E. Stuart, M. A., incumbent of St. Mary Magdalen, ascended the desk, and was greeted with a terrific shout of “Off, off,” “Paseyite,”” and “No Popery.”’ At this mo- ment, a body of men and boys i began singing ‘Rule Britann “‘Britans never will be slaves,” being taken up. with tremendous energy by persons in other parts of the church. Others mimicked tae reader. whose style is certainly peculiar, and the whole congregation was ina state of the highest possible excitement. Lucifer matches were struck, orange peel thrown about in every direction, and there is reason ty kaow that fireworks were introduced into the church, and would doubtless have been used, had it not been for the energetic and de- te conduet of the churchwarden. G. Lee was again the preacher. and when he ascended the pulpit he was assailed by a perfect hurricane of vituperation and xbuse. The most filthy epithets to which the human tongue could ‘give expression were hurled at him, in addition to the more polite recommendations to “Go down.” and ~ Be off," No Popery,”’ and “Go to Rome.” He grve for his text the words of the prophet Teaiah, -- Watchman, what of the night" bat nothing could be heard by those who were within half a dozon yardsof the pulpit. The gore who had indulged in singing “ Rule tritannia’’ now struck up with great vehe- mence * We won't go home till morning,” upon which Mr. Lee stopped, and regarded them with an expression of unmistakable dis- gust. After a lengthened pause he asked whether he should go on, and received a loud shout in the negative. At the close of the sermon not fifty people left church, and there was every desire to re- ne which was enacted on the pre- vious Sunday evening, of pelting the altar with any articles which could be conveniently peat the hurled aga’ it; but in this Churchwarden Thompson was too rT rs, inasmuch as respect Mr be removed selves in this way, the x people sang songs— >. while fights were The desk were broken some of them the Doxolo; going on in every part oj bannisters of the reading down, but the altar fortunately esexped. the building. At latest accounts they were concentrating at Brescia, which is within aday’s march of the river Minci Austria was actively engaged strengthening her fortifications, as if antic ting a fresh en- counter. The number of Ler troops in Italy or the adjoining provinces was estimated by Austrian officers at 300.000. The Neapolitan army was gradually moving in the direction of the Papal States. The Pope had appointed Mayerboler as generalissimo of his troops—a step that was looked upon as an indication of renewed hostilities. The Austrian Emperor had openly declared that, however it might be with the Duchies of Parma and Modena, he could not think of abandoning the Grand Duke of Tuscany, or Permitting the separation of the Romagna from the remaining States of the Church. It was further stated that Counts Vay and Prouay had returned unsuccessful from Hungary, to which they had been sent for Kossuth has lately disappeared from London. and is supposed to be turning the present dif- ficulties to account. Awerican Brace Soctery.—The stated meet- ing of managers of the American Bible Society was held in the Bible House in New Kerk, on Thursday, Luther Bradish in the chair. The decease of Rev. Dr. Goodrich, a member of the Committee on Versions, was announced, and appropriate resolutions adopted. Seven new societies were recognised, of which four are in Kansas, one in Iowa, one in Ohio, and one in Connecticut. Interesting communica- tions were received from agents and others, and grants of books were made to the Massa. ehbusetts Sunday School Union, and to the Sun- day School Union of the Methodist Episeopal Charch, for their schools, where no auxiliary Bible — is accessible; Testaments in Ha- Waiian and English for Honolulu; several grents Were made for Sunday schools where there are 0 Bible Societies; books also for distribution on Staten Island and in Texas; also books in various languages for distribution by captains of vessels sailing to foreign countries.
