His reason for ent was that they had found on consultation that there were now a dozen more married men than there were places for them, and they consequently have to take places which they would not like, and where. in ail probability, they might not meet a cordial wel- come. Its design is to rake the sewers of calumny, disappointed plunder-seek- ing. personal and political malevolence, &c., in the hope of fishing up some plausible charge or other—the mover evidently knows not what— against the President of the United States. All, on reading it, will instantly be aware that such and such only is its object. Itis the duty of the House to protect the purity of the Government; but not to prostitute the high functions of its office to the end of gratifying such malevolence and propensity for wholesale detraction as evi- dently actuates Mr. John Covode and his aiders and abettors in this movement. If the reader would know the reason why the country is day by day coming more and more to despise the majority of the House as a set of miserable dema- gogues, we peint to such legislation as that on which we are commenting, backed by that ma- jority’s notorious refusal to reform any one of the crying abuses connected with their own privileges and emoluments, which, stinking in the nestrils of common honesty and fair dealing with their trust, tell of the fearful down-hill progress the body is making, and of the damning influence upon the political morals of the eountry such con- duct on the part of a body holding sucha position among the institutions of the land, must neces- sarily exert. a Tue WeatHer.—The following report of the weather for the morning is made from the Amer_ ican Consolidated Telegraph Line to the Smith- sonian Institution. In THE Hovss, after we went to press— Mr. Covode offered a resolution substantially as follows: Appointing a committee of five mem- bers for the purpose of investigating whether the President of the United States or any other officer of the Government has, by money, patronaze, or other improper means, sought to influence the action of Congress or any committees thereof for or against the passage of any law appertaining to the rights of any State or Territory; or been guilty of any other alleged abuses, &c., in connection with public works, &c; and for the purpose aforesaid said committee shall have power to send for persons and papers, and report at any time. - Messrs. Florence, Houston, and others objected to the resolutions, and some confusion ensued. Mr Covode called for the previous question. Adopted. Mr. Reagan, of Texas, introduced a resolution, “which was referred to the Committee on Military Affairs, aprropetating the sum of $5,000,000, out of any money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated, to be placed at the disposal of the President of the United States to pay the expenses of such volunteer forces as he may consider it expedient to the public interest to call into the military service on the southern frontier of the United States to assure the safety of the citizens of the United States residing in that quarter, and to vindicate the laws and insure their faithful exe- cution. Ix THE Hovsg, after the reading of the Journal, Mr. Schwartz asked, but failed to obtain, leave to introduce a resolution instructing the Commit- tee on Mileage to inquire into the expediency of restoring the compensation of Congressmen to what it was formerly, and into the expediency of regulating and reducing mileage. The House resumed the consideration of the bill reported last week, and of which 2 synopsis was then given, of protection to female passengers on board emigrant vessels. Mr. John Cochrane offered two amendments, which were agreed to, providing for the process to be issued against the offenders in English, French, and German languages. passed T= PARLOR OPERA 1s UNTIL MONDay. GEORGETOWN. a Correspondence of The Star. Grorexztown, March 6, 1960. Our new City Councils met last evening, and the’ members weresworn ig by R. R. Crawford, Esq. The Board of Aldermen quickly organized, Mr: Hugh Caperton, Recorder, being president of the board by virtue of his office. In the lower board, there were present Esau Pickrell, Jos. N. Fear- son, Brooke B. Williams, W. L. Dunlop, John M. Stake, J. W. McCobb, Wm. King of Wm., and George Hill. Absent, David English. Two vacancies) Jos. N. Fearson, Esq., being’ called to the chair, the board unanimously elected David English president. Wm. A. King, bya vote of 5 to 3, was chosen clerk of the board, and Thos. Donalson elected messenger. On motion of Wm. King of Wm., the clerk of the board was directed to notify the Mayor of the two vacancies therein; and after some-other busi- ness of little importance the board adjourned. Spring is coming, and those who intend to beautify their premises by planting roses and evergreens will do well to notice Dr. Kidweil’s advertisement in another column. Prof. N. R. Smith, of Baltimore, on Saturday last, performed the operation of cutting for stone upon ason of our worthy and esteemed fellow- citizen, Chas. Rittenhouse, Esq. The little pa- tient, an interesting child only six years old, was completely under the influence of chloroform, and More insensible to pain. The calculus, about the size of a pigeon’s ega, was most skil- fully removed, and the patient at the present time is doing well. Our cit 8 on Friday last received two unex- cted visits. In the afternoon of that day, Mr. ‘om Hyer in a buggy, accompanied by a friend, made his appearance on Bridye street, and being quickly recognized and pointed out by a few knowing ones, attracted the gaze of hundreds, many of whom saw for the first time the powerful frame and defiant, but good-looking, features of the man who mauled Yankee Sullivan. After some slight refreshment, (4 drink or two maybe,) he departed for his qvarters in your city, ceding buggy wheels followed by the adu eyes of “the fancy.” Later in the evening the National Rifles, Capt. Shaetter, of your city, being out for practice micoalt ght, paid us an impromptu but welcome eal. The company numbered about 30 men, who ha ‘ted on Bridge street to go through their novel drill. The Zouave-hke ac tivity and skil- ful evolutions elicited the warm commendations ite enough to witness them. Apropos of the revival of military zeal. Eight or ten ap- plications for membership in our fine company, the Potomac Light Infantry, have been presented since the 22d ult; and it is expected that in a short time a sutticient number will be enrolled to form a battalion, of which, rumor says, Mr. Richard Cox will probably be the Major com- manding. Necessary repairs being completed, water has been let into the canal from tlarper's Ferry to Fisher’s lock, which makes it navigable through- out. The flour (10,000 barrels probably) which has accumulated at Williamsport and other points on the line will reach here in a week or tun days, and coal a week or two afterwards. Messrs.
