Vv x XV. EA ER SPR ES THREE KNOCKS AT QUILCHER’S DOOR. There he is—a tall, raw-boned, large-handed man, scarcely yet in his prime of life—a giant if he were fed—a giant who might dig, forge, or mine, or saw or plane at a ship’s ribs, but made what he is by visible starvation. His hands are bare. his single-breasted clerical looking black coat ia so old and thin as to be no shield against the bitter blast which blows; yet he plods onward with a ready step, and winding his way from a great breadth of leaf less trees to this bleak upland in a solita: part of Windsor Forest, finds what he evi ently seeks—a very ancient holly-tree. Its situa- tion is peculiar, for it stands alone on the edge of a greatelump of brushwood. Its size is enormous. Itmust have been swept by the winds and seen the snows of countless winters, as well as given garnish to the festivals of inany generations; r its leaves are still sreen—its coronals of berries transcendant in their ruddy beauty. Then, after ® moment's pause (to note, as it were, the bearings of this wild and solitary scene,) he retraced his steps more swiftly than he came. Through some al of forests land—along sol- itary country by villages and farms he goes; never resting, never pausing, though he looks more and more cold, hungry, weary and dejected. At last he reaches ilway station little beyond Windsor, and a train coming up, he speeds on his way to London—a third-class passenger with a return-ticket. She’d come up from Barksheer, where her father had been a small farmer; but things going hardly with him, and his wife dying, he left ih in the care of her mother’s sister, and went off to the diggings in Australy. He then per- eeives that he has been followed by a decent- looking man, who, arriving by the same train as himself, has the look of a stranger to Lon- don. He wears a good, but homely dress; he has an English face, but it is bronzed by for- eign suns; his ungloved hands show many a years’ rough work, and they are the more conspicuous, as in the one he carries anew two-handled basket of considerable size, and in the other a small paper trunk, carefully corded.
