He stated that yesterday, in the vicinity of Massachusetts avenue and Third street, a well known colored individal named Bill * Ford, was creating some disturbance in a crowd of persons, and a gentleman called upon him to quiet the party by taking Ford away. He went to Ford and told him he had better leave there or he would be arrested. Ford pushed him off, and told him to away. Kelly seized him. and Ford commenced striking bim on the head and face. Kelly got him down, and Ford caught his fingers in his mouth. The officer called on the white men around to aid him; they all refused, Ford still biting his fingers.’ With his disen- zaged hand Kelly got his billy out of his pocket tos rike, when one of the waite men seized it Finding no prospect of ip, he retaliated the biting and scratching game, when the darkey got euough, but on rising he managed to eseape Since then, — has been arrested for an assault on Ford, the oath being made by a white man, and the hearing will be had before Justice Fe yuson. Kelly wants to see some of the witnesses. as he thinks be will be able to identify some who refused to ald him. In the scuffle he lost bis watch keys and a gold cross, which were attached to his watch by a guard. Mr. Watter S Hunter, of this city, lectured before a lyceum audience of some sixteen hundred persons, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, a few nights ago. The subject was Western Africa, and from his large experiences upon that coast the speaker was enabled to present his points with the vivid interest of an eye witness. A delineation was given of life on ship-board in the naval ser- vice, and of the incidents of the voyage from New York to Sierra Leone, including a visit to the Cape Verd and to the Canary Islands. Descrip- tions were presented of Liberia, Cape Palmas, Benin, and other portions of the coast of Guinea. The a features of an infantile nationality, as exhibited in Liberia, were brought to view; but the philanthropic urpose of that republic was extolled, and the sel! -denying efforts of Bishop Paine, of the Episcopal Church, were alluded to with earnest commendation. Snch labors were a the true ahtidote for the bitherto ntractable barbarism of that undeveloped conti- nent. We are happy to state that Rev. Washington Roby, the able presiding officer, who was so dangerously ill in Georgetown while on an official visit to the District, has sutticiently recovered to resume his important duties. The churches of the District are choosing their lay delegates to the Conference. Geergetown station will be represented by T. A Newman; Ninth street, Washington, by Rev. U Ward as delegate, Wm. H. Seneil alternate. The itinerant system of this Church will require the change of several able and successful minieters in and about this district, their terms of service hav- ing expired. Rev. As soon as his couvictiion was announced, and before he was called to received the sentence of the Court, he vamosed from the city, leaving his security to pay the bond. This Mr. Labna did not feel inclin todo. A capias was issued by tle Court, and a bail piece was obtained by Mr. L.. who started with Officer Keese for New York. Keese got the assistance of Ofticer O’Brien, of New York, who ‘was soon on the trail of the fugitive} but while he ‘was gone to the residence of Lowenstein, that in- dividual by a window of the Sweeney House, where Keese was sitting. It may not be imprope to state that such juvenile disorderlies assemble and set the city laws at defiance in other portions of this city. It seems, therefore, not only desirable, but absolutely neces- sary, that the police officers should be Prompt, energetic, and untlinching in the execution of the law and the city ordinances prohibiting street dis- orders and other similat nuisances. We tinder stand that in the case and complaint above referred to, it is the determination of the Police justice to issue warrants against all juveniles whose names are handed to him, as they certainly will be, if their evil practices are continued in the streets of the Fifth Police District. We therefore conclude a y i iuveni berate by saying, “Unruly Juveniles, be- Tue Lecture before the Art Association on Thursday night was by Mr. Z Richards, who has been known in this city for the last ten years asa successful teacher. and who is well ualified to illustrate the claim of the teacher to e an artist. The country dealers at this season are not numerous in the market, and the main supply is furnished by the licensed dealers. The butch- ers presented a very attractive range of stalls in their department. The fish shed was not as well supplied as the purchasers could desire. The supply in the fruit and vegetable stands was about the average. The hay market was slimly attended, and the demand there was light. The ‘ices generally are unchanged, a slight fall be- ng noticeable in the price of such articles as in- crease in quantity in the spring. EMT RES A Resoxrtion in regard to a certain Bill now . ing in Congress. Whereas a ed been introduced in the Senate of the United States to prohibit all Corpo- rations in the District of Columbia from issuing notes or bills of any kind for circulation in the erga of Columbia after the first day of April Be it resolved by the Board of Aldermen and Board of Common Council of ‘e Corporation of Georgetown, That the said measure is repugnant to the well known wishes of the people of this town; that, however well intended it may be, it ts founded ‘upon a misapprehension of the true interests of our people; that it would sink us to the feet of the cities which. enjoying the aid and facilities of legit:mate banking, are com- peting with us for the trade and commerce upon which we have mainly subsisted for more than al xty Years, that it would restrict ovr resources, cram industry, depreciate the value of A Property, an pecaaly, decrease our population; thal, ce the ong experience of all the commercial cities of the Union bas taught them that a well regulated bank- ing system is an indispensable auxiliary to their prosperity. we cannot conceive why it is not of equal and imperative importance to us; that we object to it, also, on the ground that while its os- tensible object is to discountenance the circulation of paper imoney, it authorizes and invites the banks of the States to tlood the District with paper money, of the soundness and stability of Jetos ie ow nothing; that we have no ob- nm ie passage of any laws by Congress which would place our banks upon a. basis of greater secur'ty than may be deemed now to exist, but we dread ‘the consequences of a sudden dis. ruption of a system with which we have been so long familiar, and with which we will be satis. fied until a more wholesome and congenial one shall have been substituted by the kind consider- ation and wisdom of Congress. And be it further resolved, That the Mayor be, and is hereby. reatesied to present a copy of this resolution te each House of Congress. as a delibe erate and most respectful expression of the views of this Corporation upon a subject of grave im- portance to the ple of Georgetown.
