(From the New Orleans Delta.] On last Sunday evening the African Church vu St. Paulstreet, First District, was fila to »verlowing with colored folks, who had congre- gated there to witness a marriage ceremony, which had been announced previously. In due time the bridal party arrived in a carriage, and the bride, dressed up in white muslin and white satin sltppers, sj rang out upon the pave- ment and waiked up the aisle, leaning upon the #rm of an elderly colored ‘“‘gemman.’? The bridegroom, in broadcloth, white kid gloves, and patent leather boots, stepped up to the itur with rather a confused look, seeming, as glanced over the crowd, as if he was fearful eing persons present whom he did not wish nvited to the ceremony. At last the old black pestor adjusted his spectacles with the air of an old executioner, and then looked to see that the couple and those in waiting were properly wrranged and sommenced. Tha exhortation o 2 vn the subject of matrimony was was listened to with marked attention, by all except the bridegroom. who seemed somewhat nervously inclined, and looked as if he wished the affair was over. At last the old black patriarch commenced the ceremony of uniting them, and, as a matter of form, nothing else, ssid, in a clear voice, whjch could be heard all over the building—*An if dere is any niggers what objects to this marrige, let dem 3 out now, or forever moor hold dere peace."” There was &® moment of breathless silence, the bride turned half around boldly, while the bride- sTeom twitched the muscles of his face ner- vously, and looked toward the carpet of the chancel. The next moment the congregation was in commotion. A noise was then made near the door. Some exclamations of anger in @ woman's voice, were plainly discernable » and then fairly sweeping along the aisle, with a baby in her arms, came a likely negro woman, fairly tuaming over with excitement. Reaching the railing of the chancel, and holding her baby high up in her arms, she exclaimed, in a voice which frightened the would-be bride almost into hysteries, and caused the bridegroom’s &nees to quake, +I object to dis ere marriage, Mister Preecher; dat man am my husband afore God . The whole colored congregation, the majority of whom were women, here rose to their feet, and the bridegroom, seeing that a storm was brewing, made a bold stroke to save himself. ‘-Whar's de proff?’ whar’s de pruft!’ he exclaimed, fearing to look at the woman, and turning round apparently to the excited audience. The woman held up a small bundle, which oscillated somewhat at the tep in her excited handling of it, and the crowd was satisfied. The bridegroom dared not look buck, but he judged from the countenances of the congregation what the woman was doing. and seeing that the game was up in that quar- fis bride and half bors her lown the aisle towards the door. The Babcl that follow.dean not be described, and some ot the excited old women worked themselves into such a frenzy that they eaught up their ~-old men’s”’ stieks and pursued the conple to the cerriage door with evil intent. Fortu- nately for the bridal party, the Jehu of the vehicle inte which they sprang, lazhed his horses and dashed away just in time to save their bacon. After getting cleverly out of danger, a council of war was held in the car- riage, and the occupants deciding that they had been much aggrieved, coneluded to try another tned, tied the above the buzz of the folks in church; Go ter grabbed hold of poe up town, who, we | <not ard sent them forth r ng— ““T wo souls with but one single thought, ‘Pwo hearts that beat as one.’* — «woe, Meas generally cure i a particle of any medicine is needed.
