A Coct 1X TRovBLE —Yesterday afternoon » office of Justice Donn was honored with the bess ence of the Count Edward Hermann Juro- reser“ jetty, who was introduced there by Of- wit Oe King of the police. The Count is a : va of about forty years apparently, about six feet bigh, of 2 singularly military air and man- feet ge gin military style, with black raglan Peeided on the sleeves and back, a double-breast- braless frock coat, Which he wears buttoned to the neck. ® pair of light blue pants; with jeable stripes of green material, very wide, down the side seams, and strapped under his. boots. upon the heels of which appear a be of silver-plated spurs. His face too, is very pot Cyabie, adorned as it is with a moustache be- remning under the nose and stretching over a eed part of each cheek, and a long goatee, thick eva dark. The business of the Count was to wiiie a question which has been started by the direct charge of Mad Rosamond Duchinoix, of ing money under false pretences. *Mad D: noix, in her statement made to the magis- trate. svid that she was induced to take the Count to her house, (La Fayette House, corner of Four- teenth and F streets.) by sympathy; he represent- ing himself asan exile, and asa gentleman of noble family in Moldavia, where he has an estate whieh be is prevented from obtaining. by an unele. His statements to her and others relative to services in the late wars in Europe, serving under Garibaldi, and in the Hungarian army, were so apparently truthfal asto gain credence with all who heard, even of gentlemen who had served there. - His first appearance here was at Willards’ Hotel, where, after a thorough investigation of the papers which he presented, and a brief stay, the proprietors suspected that there was some- thing wrong, and tuey sent him away. German ntlemen who sympathized with him advised in, in view of the limited condition of his finances, to live in a more economical style. Upon the presentation of a number of his letters to Madame Ducbinoix, they were placed in the hands of Mr. A. Shucking for investigation, and that ventieman being acquainted with the languages fh which they were written, inquired fully into the origin of the Count, and concluded that he was an |mpostor, and informing Madame Duchi- noix. she bad him arrested. The letters appended sive some clue as to the man. There is other testimony of importance which will be here to- day. The Count was sent to jail for a further hearing. He is said to have figured extensively at the North under the title of the Count Askowski, Kisfaludy, Chef d’ Escadron, nephew to the late lamented Princess of Struga, in Moldavia, a near relation of Prince Ghika, Major of Cavalry, &c. Mr. Willards, at the Willard Hotel, Washing- ton—Your Well born: Have the Kindness to per- mit me to entrust you with a business and to ask from you informations which are for me of the sreatest importance and which | state to you in the shortest manner. I came personally to New York to transact the business myself, but as I would only find my cousin the Count Darowitz Ballelly’s after two days inquiries, and as the same bas showen him- self disinclined to act with me personally, | am compelled to give the business to a competent son, as | am obliged on account of urgent af- fairs to return mysclf with the steamer Persia, to day to Europe. . tty cousin the Count Herman Edward of Dar- owitz Bailelly’s—formerly major in the Austrian service is already a fugitive since I-50. He en- tered in the poor fe of France in Algier, and he bas by bis taking part in the Crimean and Ita wars, as also by his communications with Kos- <ath, Mazzini, and associates, deprived himself of al! hope of ever being worthy of an amnesty, and to enter in ion again of confiscated estates. On the other hand [ have, in his and my interest, brought it so far, that I have the positive assurance, that if the Count will give In favor of me his cousin a lawful and powerful renunciation act for the session of his estates and that this act if found lxwful would assist me to redeem the confiscated estates. But positive conditions were : First: That he shall forever renounce his estates and citizens rights. Secondly: Never té return to the Imperial and Royal States of Austria. . As he has declared in writing to me that he was disposed to enter in arrangement with me, through the mediation of a business man, [| have resolved tyaddress myself to you on account of having Deen recommended to me bya friend here. | hive written to the Count that he should apply to ya, and that you had been authorized by me to arrange the matter with hii. Now in regard to yourself. sir, 1 propose to you the offer: that if you are successful in causing the renunciation to take place, that I will y vn at h morary fee of five thousand guiden (forins of 50 ceats) in ready cash, and to be paid as soon as th renouncing act has been delivered to me or to oue of the witnesses. To the Count, f offer to pay eat to bim thr se of ain Vienna (Austria) the sum of eighty thousand gulden muutze (florins at 50e) for the act of renunciation, and to pay it ready money. If you conduct this business with energy and sagacity I am sure that you would sncceed as I know the position of my cousin in this moment asthe most favorable for this business. He ts only since 2 or 3 months in America, and finds himself in great strese for money. I send you therefore a bill of exchange for two thousand gulden (florins) which I beg you to deliver to him with the observation that this bill of exchange is destinated for him without any regard to the business being consumated or not. fh the hoppe that my request and my wishes will be realized by all your power, I wish you would ia every respect assist the count with coun- sel and deed and treat him according to his ranq. You must not pay any. attention to fis rude and military character, which is only the consequence of bis education and position. When you know him better you will find him kind and loyal in every respect. Counsel him particularly not to mix bimself with the political fugitives in the country. also not to sworender to vain and chy- merical hoppes to retuen to Europe. A Fatuer’s Grier —Yesterday afternoon, of- ficers Zimmerman and Browers were called upon by a bard working laboring man named Camer, toaid him in recovering his child, who had left her father and mother to live a life of prostitn- tion. She had been gone several weeks, and it was only recently that he discovered her stopping lace. The officers went to the house of Susan Prince, on Maine avenue, near Four-and-a-half street, and found her there, and conveyed her to the guard-house to await the order of her father. She is a very pretty yirl, small in size, and be. tween 12 and 13 years of age. She has grown astonishingly expert in the use of the vocabulary of common prostitutes, and her language was dis- gusting in the extreme, especially her boasting history of the different houses she had been in since she left her parents. Upon the arrival of her father she was taken to the office of Justice Donn, where her father related how she had fall- en. He isa hard-working man, but being out of employment, he allowed his daughter to support herself by. hiring asa help at various burda honses. She went from one to another, and being withdrawn from parental observation, her degra- dation was bezun. He said that his present wife was her stepmother, but that her treatment was of the kindest description to the children under her charge. The old man turned to his.child and asked, with tears in his eyes, “Sarah. did your father or mother ever treat you unkindly in your life?” The hardened Ai made no reply, but turned her head away with a scornful toss of con- tempt. A warrant was served upon her for steal- ing a bonnet, but under all the circumstances, it was thought best to send ker to the workhouse for ninety days, so that when her father gets to work inthe Spriny, he may send ber to the Mag- dalene House in Philadelphia, or House of Ref- nge in Baltimore, to try to effect a reformation of er. She was committed for wate days. The otficers stated that at the bouse of Sasan Prince there is another child about the sume size, little if any older, and at first they thought she was the girl they wanted. Upon these statements Justice Donn fasned a warrant for the keeper, charging her with keeping a bawdy house. Tue Lecture of Dr. Scudder, last evening. was in relation to the Brabminic Priesthood—caste; their mode of worship. The Brahminic priests are regarded as gods; even the person and ckar- acter of the Braham were sacred, and it was cer- tain death for one of any other tribe even to touch such an one witha blade of grass. Caste was a peculiar, all-pervading and ‘terrible institution, and to treat of it would not only require a whole lecture, but many volumes. He would endeavor to give them as good an impression of it as he could in the limited time allotted to him. It was not in any sense a civil institution; but it wasa religious constitution of society. It claimed a directly Divine origin. The four original castes came from the four different parts of the God Bhirmuda. ‘The Brahmin came out of the mouth, for be was the purest. In bebalf of caste there was claimed a Divine source and phi phical basis! To transyress caste was to disregard and trample under foot the Divine law. and to which transgression a severe penalty was attached. The Brahmin is the leading caste; but each caste claims superiority over an or. Time and preachin had aa yet done nothing to blast out or encroach upon the Brahmin, and they were to-day what they were three thousind years ago. ‘The other three classes, however, were much broken up, and it very much doubted whether the dif- ferent intermediate classes existed atall. He did not hesitate to say that the greatest b-rrier to the rogress of Christianity in India was this horrible nstitution of *-caste’’—greuter than all idolatry. it was a moral. physical, social, and national blight; and not muéb could be sxpected to be accomplished until it was completely laid low.. But it most finally yield to the love of Christ, which nething could withstind. Wasuineton Ant AssociaTion.—The lecture announced to be delivered before this association by the Rev. Dr. Samson last evening was post- poned until Monday evening next at the request of the members and others, who wished to attend without interruption the course of lectures at the Smithsonian, one of which came off last evening. The display of paintings, though not complete yet in consequence of the no: ival of pictures on the way: is highly attractive already. Among those in place we notice some beautiful landscapes by Weber, Richards, Fueschel, and others; a tine historical picture, Franklin before the English Privy Council, by Schuessele; a set of yraphic scenes illustrative of Western character, from the | epee of Bingham; some adusirable little pieces y a Philadelphia artist, Newell; and a great number of fine portraits, including one of striking excellence, wMch has evidently been a work of love with the artist, {.e. the full-length portrait of his wife, by Thos. The contractor for the work at No. 4, was ordered to complete it With the greastest possible dispatch. The New York Coal’ Companies refused to give the least aid unless the canal board would authorize their agent to let the work and permit him to give $30,000 for the repairs at both dams. The board refused to transfer their powers to the agent of the coal companies, preferring to let the work to our own citizens, especally as they have agreed todo itfor one half the amount asked by the New Yorkers.” Tue Perseverance Fire Company, No. 5, have elected the following oiticers for the ensu. ing eleven months :—President, J. Since the fire on Congress street, a few nights nights ago, some of the brick walls left standing were noticed to be slightly out of perpendicular, but no immediate danger was a bended. During the extraordinary high wind which pre- j Yailed last night, however. the sonth wall was blown down,’a portion of it falling upon aad crushing the frame stable immediate! y beneath it. Some of the stablemen were inside at the time, but strange to state escaped without injury, and afterwards succeeded with the help of the roprietor, Mr. Peter Von Essen, and his assis- ints, in extricating all of the horses safely with the exception of one slightly burt. It seems a miracle almost, as in addition to the weight of the superincumbent rains there was added several tons of hay in the loft, but it may partly be ac- counted for by the strength of the rafters which, in falling, lodged inst the side where the horses stood in such a manner as toshield them.
