Our Massachusetts exchanges contain many very affecting incidents connected with the late terrible calamity at Lawrence. We find the following in the esta Journal : Thomas Nice recognized the body of his wife by a ring she wore on her finger. He had searched anxiously for her body, as she was found in the list of the missing. A charred and misshapen mass brought into the room of the dead, he examined. as he examined all. Upon a bone in the elasped skeleton of the hand, he found 4 ring. pon it was engraved hisown name. It had been presented by him to his wife on their happy bridal day. When he found this sure token, his sad consolation triumphed for a moment over his burning sor- ow. He waved his hand aloft and cried for joy. When he looked again upon the blacken- ed corpse, his loss feel as it seemed with adead- e 1ing weight upon his soul, and all was changed. {fe fell upon his attendants, venting the wildest grief. Nothingcould command his attention besides, and he was borne from the room rav- ing wild a: a maniac, exhibiting a feeling strong as could be pictured by the most extravagant imagination Mrs. barrett, wife of James Barrett. of Law- rence, hud lost a child. She, too, was a fre quent fisitor at the dead-house. Saturday af- ternoon she came, accompanied by a younger daughter, bringing a miniature likeness of the lost. The :miniature represented the features of a young lady of unusual personal attractions. Her lively beauty danced in her youthful, fresh and face; an expression of a nature almost angelic beamed in hereyes. With this the mothe sister came seeking the origi- nal among the dead. The lost one was found, but the fair face was burned away; the lithe and graceful form was now a shapeless trunk, which was recognized only by the fabrics of the dress she wore, a small part of which was not destroyed. The mother threw herself on the remains; she aroused herself and gazed upon the miniature, and from that her eyes again wandered tothe remains of her child. She fainted and was borne away. Those present turned away heart-sick. Those who had stood firm through all until now melted until their sympathy awakened tears that fell like sum- mer rain. Among the missing first reported was James Harty. He came from New York nearly a year ago. accompanied by his only sister—his only relative in America. They had long lived for each.other alone. His form below the head was found to be perfect in death, only the flesh was literally roasted by the fierce heat. His body was recognized by a key and portmonnaie in his pocket; added to this evi- dence his boot was pulled off, and, upon his stocking, was found his initial letters, which had been carefully threaded there by his dear sister, who now sought him, and thus found him in her despair. The trunk of the deceased was taken to the City Hall, and the key found in his pocket fitted the lock. To add to the grief of the sister, while it proved again that the vilest depravity can exist among the most awful scenes, the trunk was broken open by some villain while it remained at the City Hall, and all that was practically valuable, as well as all that was highly prized as sacred mementoes, was stolen from it. An incident is related of a young and beau- tiful girl employed in one of the upper stories of the mill, who, when the crash came, was thrown prostrate upon the floor by a piece of shafting which fell across her neck, preventing her rising. The coupling which connected the shaft prevented the latter from strangling her; and in her comparative ease, and confident of a speedy delivery, she calmly watched the ef- forts made by the rescuers ty extricate her. She would have been saved had the fire been stayed but for afew minutes. But the flames swept over the spot, claiming and obtaining its victim. —_—+- 0 Financial Distre it the Far West. From gentlemen who have recently returned from the West. we receive inelancholy accounts of the state of financial mattersin that region. The effect of inflated, extended, extravagant speculations in wild lands and town lots has re- coiled with great force upon not only the capi- 3 who have invested their money, but upon the enterprising pioneers who, while building up the material interests of the coun- try, used their spare money and their credit in purchasing new Iands and estates. The crash of “oT brought down judgments numberless upon the devoted heads of thousands of indi- viduals of this class in Iowa and Minnesota, and ruined men who would have been rich had they sold out before the crisis. More th ne of the men who were the first to plant civilization in the bowling wilderness. who have built up cities and towns. were of- fered extravagant prices for their property and refused them. Instead of selling out and curing & competency of real capital, they in- volved themselves in debt, and when thee came, which swept away the weak banks and bankers of that region, their property was patched over with judgments, and a large pro- portion of it will have to be sacrificed for less than a quarter of its real value. We have heard of many individual cases of peculiar hardship. One man from New Orleans tnvested $30,000 in St. Paul a few years since, and a few months ago he determined to ‘-real- ize’ upon it. He sold it for eighteen hundred dollars! A gentleman who lives in Minnesota informs us that a few days since he was passing through the streets of St. Paul and saw one of the citi- zens, who had been a large dealer in real estate, chopping down his well curb with an axe. He stopped and inquired the reason of a proceeding so erratic an apparently so rash. ‘Come into the yard and I'll tell you,”’ said the chopper, and he proceeded to state that he had been unable to collect acent of moneys due him, for some time, and borrowing was cut of the question. He had not a stick of wood in bis house to cook his dinner with, and as he objected to starving and freezing, he was sacri- ficing the well curb to his absolute necessities. In Davenpert, Iowa, a gentleman who, with * partner, trausacted the heaviest grain and lumber business done in that section of the country, is now earning his bread by driving an {xpress wagon. The city of Davenport is Tend broke. No watchmen, no g8s, no money in the city treasury to pay for anything. Iowa is, in fact. worse off than Minnesota, where a good crop of wheat was raised for exportation last year. Two good crops will restore the North- West to something like prosperity. But the Pressure it is now undergoing will ruin thou- sands of individuals, and check the general growth of that region for several —Bos- ape ea 4 several years. — Bos AmMAtcAMATION Batt Is New Yorx.—A | ae amalgamation ball came off on Thurs- ay evening at the Assembly Rooms, Prince street. composed entirely of black men and white women, no white inan or black woman being admitted. The News says: “The room was tastefully decorated with banners, flags. &c., and portraits of celebrated Abolitionists, conspicuous among the number, being a beantiful colored photograph of John Brown, surrounded by a wreath of Jaurel. At 1 o'clock the festivities were brought to a close by the arrival of Broadway gamblers and shoulder-hitters with bags of flour and soot concealed about their persons. They com- menced by throwing the flour over the black men and the soot-on the white women. At this junctare the lights were extinguished, and then commuincet & scene which beggars description. Word was then conveyed to Capt. Turnbull, who shortly after arrived with ® posse of policemen of the Eighth precinct Lights being again restored, the Captain or- dered the hall to be cleared, an injunction which was immediately complied with, and thus ended the amalgamation ball which af- forded a rich treat to those who witnessed it.” enteral ne oot {77 The latest Lond: Albert is suffering from a Peed cnet Prince MISCELLANEOUS.
