TUESDAY..¥2... sis... September 6, 18696 Spirit ofthe Morning Press. ‘The Constitution tells how that the Republicans have loved the Hon. John Bell, of Tennessee, “not wisely, but too well,’’ how'that he tas re- solved to jilt his “sable woers,” how that he has. spoken of them contemptuously, hasadded insult to Injury, and, not content with lacerating their hearts by deserting them when thelr hopes were brightest, bas abused them and their political reli- gion—all as shown by a recent speech of his at Memphis. The Intellegencer publishes and comments favor ably upon a letter of Wm. C. Smedes, of Vicks- burg, Miss , 6 the managers of the recent “« grand jubilee’ of the Opposition, at Memphis, Tenn. oe 5 WASHINGTON NEWS AND GOSSIP. —— Tue Great Stekr.—The pessing occurrence in Europe of most general interest Is donbtless the great London ‘strike.’ wherein sixty thousand artizans and laborers engaged not long since tn building, find themselves out of employment. Up to this time the result has been to deprive about 300,000 of the ei population of their usual means of support. The story of the difficulty between the employers and employed is too long to be toid in detail here. Soflice it, therefore, to say that the employed demand a reduction of the number of working houfs two nine (Instead of ten) anda contiuwance of the rates of wages they were pre- vionsly receiving; which is equivalent toa de- mand of an increase of one-tenth the current wages. ‘The -employed, by means of their organization, determined to make the demand general, but commenced it in the shopsef but a single build- ing-contractors firm employing 1,200 or 1,500 hands. ‘The heavy employers of the city at once organized into an association to resist the demand; and the employed refusing to work in the shops where the strike occurred, the employers made the suspension of yperations general in all the large batiding shops of the city. The controversy is carried on. by means of managing committees on beth sides —eaeh setting forth to an investica- ting committee of Parliament a long list of griev- ances, criminations and recriminations. Millions on millions of dollars have alresdy been lost to the employed and also to the employers by this state of things, and from present appear- ances there is no telling when these heavy sacrifi- ces may cease. The members of the various build- ing trades anions of the city having contributed all they can to the suppow of thetr fellow-crafts- men, and now funds enough for a meagre support of the300,000 workmen and their families involved in the trouble, are being contributed by their fel- low-czaftsmen in other parts of the kingdom. The employers out of the city, at last accounts from England, were preparing to make the cause of the city employers theiss ; suspeuding operations also, thus cutting short the means of their workmen to perpetuate the London strike In the mean while no riots have grown out of this disastrous state of things Yet there is ao telling when riots will grow out of it—serions riots, indeed. The London Leader takes the ground that the employers pay as much wages for ten hours work as they can possibly afford to pay, and that the real origin of the trouble is in the exorbitant tax- ation ef the government to obtain the means uf ving public expenses that should uever have been incurred. Everything the laborer or me- chante must porchase {sso taxed as to cost him far more than he should rightfully pay for it; and therefore his ptherwise ample wages (accerding to the Leader's theory) prove insuflicient. ‘While this may be very true, it is hardly te be expe ‘ed that the root of the evil can be reached ; that Pacliament will consent in reasonable time to lessen the pu; sar burden by decreasing public expenditures and taxation. It is sincerely to be hoped that the present state of aifairs may be speedily brought to an end. Filse, the prosperity of the kingdom can hardly fail do be injured, so general appears to be the de- leruajnation of the antagonist interests involved stand ont, eseb on its own platform, regardless 1 of consequences. We are not competent to express an opinion of ‘ing seen but very meagre accounts of them, the publications in connection with theaffair on this side being for the most part confined to accounts of what the hostile parties have done, rather than of precise ly why they have done it. One consequence bids sh building mechanics and laborers to the United States this 0, we apprebend; such being a common result of a stignation in the English employment mar- the merits of the controversy, b: fair to be a heavy emigration of FE: ket from any cause whatever. it is not to be expected that the employers would consent to give the practical increase of ten per centum of wages in finishing their contracts de before the strike ; as that would destroy all of any profits whatever on them, if not bank- rupt most of them—the employers. Yet it is sin- cerely to be hoped that the end may be the ar- rangement of some important ameliorations of the coudition of labor in England, in all callings, whieh is generally but poorly remunerated, when compared With its remuneration on this side of the the employed are unjastly sufferiny—that their demands for better eireumstances are reasonable aud proper. The aly question in our mind is whether they struck the right “lead” in their movement—in insisting on an Increase of wages, rather than taking means m Atlantic. We doubt not to exact from the Government a decrease of taxa- ton; the remedy of the so well-known organ of their class throughont the Kingdom—The Leader if they obtain the relief they seek, their movement will surely be followed by similar movements of ‘abor employed in other callings there; to end in very general changes throughout Great Britain, and previously, in very general embarrassments M classes engaged in business in England, Scotland, and Wales, which will nifect the United ‘States to a greater or less degree, of course. The rand result will, however, be advantageous to isbor as connected with the profits of the use of capital, @ peiut of so great importance to the real interest of mankind, as that the thinking world will take 1 thought of the tribulation by means of which the result may be worked out. Dealers ia all quarters of the country, taking advantage of this state of things, are getting up each (for sale) bis own superphosphate, mani pu- lated guano, phosphated guano, &c. When these articles were first brought to the notice of the public, they were invariably fairly composted—so honestly made as to givesuch manures theft present reputation. Those making them were few in number, and were easily reached by the few using them, in case of dissatisfaction with their several Preparations. Now, however, the number who are making them is legion. The agricultural perfodicals are loaded down with puffy advertisements of them— each being, of course, represented as far better for the farmer’s use than anything else under the sun. It is doubtlecs true that more or less of them con- tinue to be made well; yet it is quite as true that sharpers, taking advantage of the state of things described above, are putting on the agricultural public thousands on thousands of tons of compara- tively valueless compounds at enormous prices. We advise all having occasion to purchase such fertilizers, to ve cautious of whose they buy; in- forming themselves thoroughly before buying that of any manufacturer, with reference to his cbmracter for fair dealing. Else, a shave in the Purchase is likely to be the result. The farmer shonld in the first place satisfy himself that the manafactarer bas character and position to lose by perpetrating fraud ; and next, that those who have used his compound are capable of judging of its results, and are also satisfied that it does produce results worth paying roundly for. ate Cvttivation oF PoLish Weat tn Texas —A ceeded their most sanguine expectations. en Aaa Di tracts from the public sales. a Adams, RK. 1., and of Fort Independence, Mass.
