He judged, from what he had seen, that there were many of them whodid not know the swill pail from the milk pail; and that others did not know how to make butter aud cheese, nor how to keep their chtidrea clean. Rufus Choate died there at 2 o’clock on Wednesday morning. Mr. Choate left Boston a few weeks ago for Europe, for the benefit of bis health, but was compelled, by an increase of suf- fering, to stop at Halifax, where he had since re- mained quite feeble. His disease was affection of the heart. Mr. Choate was born in Essex, Mass., in’ 1799, and was therefore nearly sixty years of age. While studying law he spent gearly one year in this ¢ity im the office of the celebrated William Wirt. In 1824. be was admitted to the bar, in the town of Danvers, and afr two or three years, removed to Salem. His success was complete, almost from the period when he entered upon bis profession, and he took rank almost at once, with some of the oldest and ablest men of the Massachusetts bar. Though an earnest poli- tician of the old Whig school, Mr Choate has been but seldom in public life. From the first Mr. Choate was distinguished for a thirst for knowledge, and the love of letters continued with him to the end of his life. When in Uon- gress he literally devoured books, and read more than any fifteen or twenty members of either House of Congress. He slept but little, was al- ways attentive to public business, and found the greatest Pleasure of his life in bis companionship with history, with the public men of past ages, and in the discussion of great public questions, _——$—— eee Naval IntxLvioexce.—The latest news from the home and Facitic squadron, by the Star of the West, is as follows: The steam frigate Roanoke, } repairs is her machinery aye S ye iy on the 34 inst. expecting the arrival ——_ the Japan commissioners.
