Cora Stewart, tried yesterday on a charge of keeping a bawdy house, in which they found the defendant guilty in the first count, keeping a bawdy house, and not guilty of keeping a disorderly house. Mr. Rateliife, tor defendant, here brought the testimony of Odlicers Fanning and Eckloff to show that the defendant wave up ion of the house atleged to be occupied by her, before the charge for which she is now convicted was institated. In bringing this proof, it was understood that it was to be considered as testimony in mitigation of the offence. The defendant was sentenced to three months’ impris- « it in the county jail, and a tine of $1 ty MeNerhany was placed on trial on a ‘ of assanit and battery on Deborah Wise. It was the property of Alfred Jones, dealer in feed, hay. &c., and contained besides his five or ab tons of baled hay, several valuable machines, bar- ness, &c. The fire spread so rapidly that the stable and contents. except the horses, were destroyed. The loss by the occurrence, the owner estimates at a little over $2,000, upon which there was no in- surance. There is no doubt that it was the work of incendiaries, inasmuch as several suspicious —— had been seen lurking about the premises fore the occurrence. The fire department turned out with alacrity. and strove to prevent an increase of damage to property; and the firemen deserve cet for their orderly deportinent and. generous exertions. A Covonep Monomaxtac.—Some of our Jus- tices of the Peace are considerably annoyed about this time by the frequent visits of a very old col- ored man, named Polydore Jobnson, who is very desirous to sell his son Edward, a youth of 45 years, well known as a boot-maker in this city. It is evident the old man is not right in his upper story, aud though harmless, he is pretty much of a nuisance. Not only does the old man annoy the Justices, but he also makes an occasional visit to the City Hall, to obtain proofs of Ris title to the boy Edward ; and has also tried to gain an audi- ence of the President, in order to make all things right. He claims that Ned is chased by hii; that Ned has not Uehaved as he should; and that, being old and poor himself, he wants to sell Ned, in order to place him under Proper restraint, and at the same time supply him- self with funds. ' » Grorsrrows, July §, 1559, A somewhat careful examination of ‘the poor and workhouse premises, on Monday satisfied us of the justice of the complaints which for many years have been heard among our citizens, on ac+ count of the enormous annual ex ineurred in the support of this establishment. And, indeed, the fact that the garden farm attac. to this establishment, comprising seventeen ecres of Iand handsomely located for such a Purpose, and sus- ceptible of improvement to almost any extent, and an abundance of good manure always at the disposal of the Corporation, should yield only a few hundred dollars Foon towards its support was a mystery to us until we visited the ises. The apricot, cherry, and other fruit trees are dying out, and yield ‘nothing, for the waut of proper attention; and the shrubbery that once adorned the yards of the main buildings has nearly entirely disappeared. And what is equally strange, notwithstanding there is sufficient gar- bage and vegetable matter about the premises to feed from a dozen to twenty hogs, there is not one to be found on the place. Ina word, there cannot be found to-day on the premises, fit for immediate use, one dollar's worth of anything necessary for the snstenance of the inmates that was not pur- chased out of the Corporation trezsury. Where the public will fix the blame of this ne- glect, we know not. For our own part, we think it justly attaches to those who have from year to year been intrusted with its general supervision— we mean the trustees, who are required by law. and paid for the service, to visit the establishment at least once a moiith, for the purpose of seeing that it is properly managed. that this duty has not been performed, no one can deny who will take the tronble to visit it. The only thing about the premises that bears any marks of care, indus- try and attention, is a small patch of corn, and one tomatoes. Both the exam- ination and exhibition yesterday retiected credit upon the teachers. The programme of the exhi- bition was gone through with in a manner which elicited the praise and admiration of the entire auditory, tna f of the declaimers exhibiting a very superior ree of mind and talent for boys of theirage. The school was very appropriately addressed by the Rev. Dr. Early, President of th Georgetown Coltexe, and the multitude of hand- some book premiums awarded to the pupils by the Rev. Mr. Aschwander, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Aiken; after which, the audience dispersed for their homes, highly pleased with the enter- tainment thus furnishished them by the boys.
