Tux German Jepices.— TNE PROCEEDINGS AT ARLINGTOR. i At the time we went to press yesterday, the German societies, with their friends and the visit. ing public generally, were enjoying themselves at Arlington in such good-humored, genial style as 18 not always or often seen where so great a gath- ering of people is thrown together. At the en- trances to the enclosure, the keepers for most part of the day bad their bands full in receiving the new arrivals by omnibuses, boats and | mig pee veyences, and in en taof bright ribbon which each visitor was ex: to fasten to Lis (coat) butten-hole. THE ENCLOSURE. Within the enclosure was presented a scene of exceeding brilliancy of color, picturesqueness of croupings, aad animation of movement. The whirling waltzers upon the pavilion floor attracted at all times an iolerested circle, many deep, of spectators, who, in their turn partaking of the epthusiasm of the occasion, joined in the joyous dance, and net fora moment was the floor anoc- cupied of the musicians allowed a bar's rest. Mary refnsed to admit him, and he her, and called her a number of particularly harsh names. She held the door closed against him, and he took occasion to kick out one of the panels of the door, and threw a number of brick bats against the house. He also pulled 2 razor ont of his pocket, which he did not — but with which threatened to cut out ary’s heart. Callan, step-son of Nicholas Cal- lan, Esq. of this city, who sneeeeded in pulling the top man off his antagonist and dragging him moment the proprictor rushed up with a mith, and Beveridge ‘allan a blow over the face witha siung-Shot. which laid his right cheek open, and rendered hii for a moment senseless. While en- fe mrtetye o to keep off his assailants, Mr. C. was jostled about in a very unceremonious manner by Beveridge and Goldsmith, and some one in the crowd attempted to rob him of his watch. A number of his personal fends who were on the ground, hearing of b took hil situation, rushed im and outof their hands in time to prevent rrence of anything more serious. The hot with which Callan was struck was af- 5 —— up on the spot. Note —Happening to see much of this fracas ourself.we may not inappropetately add further ex- planations upon it. The difticulty commenced in the dancing saloon, crowded as that was with males, females and children. A hoge * fightin man’? of Washington essayed to make a muss there, and one of the agents of the Proprietor un- dertook to remove hiin from the grouuds. In so doing. several young, tmen—not one of whom, we ic, knew aught of the previous occurrences, deed, of the man being forcibly remeved— essayed to rescue the latter from the person remov- ing him ; or. as they evidently sup d. to part two persons who were fighting "Phey had jnst succeeded in separating them, when ‘Beveridge and one or two of ki onging on the prein- ises came up, handled the reseners as severe! as cxplained above. Our iinpression is, that thus there were mistakes on botl sides—on the part of those interfering to take the disturber out of the hands of the man endeavoring to remove him from the nds, and on the part of Beveridge and bis assistants in imayining that the interfer- ence wasas friends and supporters of the disturber, This occurrence should tach the proprietors of the place the necessity of keeping on the premises aregular Virginia police vtlicer, who may have lawfnl anthorit arrest any disturber of the peace there, and to summon any posse he chooses to assist bim in so doing, when that may be neces- sary. We doubt not that the proprietor's purpes> was, ere he became maddened with rage, simply to preserve the peace of the premises. But be svcn *@ent in’? much more after the fashion of the “States Hose’ than after that of an officer of the law. The privilege of using a slung-shot or billy in such a crowd is not one to be lightly ac- corded, nér under zny circumstances to men who are known as successful bruisers. We are anxious to see the Ariizgton Spring well managed, as it bas been this season up to last evening; for, if well managed, itcan hardly fail to add nota little to the substantial comfort of the District of Co- iumbia. But unless its police regulations are only in the hands of responsible police officers, of course those who wonld have assurance of return- ing from 2 pic-nic with an uncracked skull will be loth to venture over there.
