It will doubtless strike the public, as it strikes us, that Alderman Moore's ot the correctness of the version of the proceed- ings of the caucus published in yesterday's Star, would have been much more satisfactory had it embraced a distinct statement of the particulars wherein its accuracy is denied. Now, we have to say that the version in question is that of a gentleman in all respects quite as reliable, as an informant, as Alderman Moore, whose opportunity of knowing precise- ly what then and there oceurred, was also as ample as his. The main point of interest to the Washing- ton public is, however, the accuracy of our version of the caucus voting upon turning Mr. Middleton out of the Secretaryship of the Board of Alderman, which Alderman Moore docs not specifically deny. Yet, though it is not in his power to deny its accuracy in the main, we find that he probably could safely have ventured to deny the enlire accuracy of our account of his own vote; as on two or three of the ballotings, two bianks, rather than one were thrown—the second being that of Mr. Moore, we take it for granted, Having voted on every other ballot to remove Mr. Middleton, it seems to us that the fact that on one only he voted a blank, is but a rickety foundation on which to risk a general and sweeping denial of the ac- curacy of the Star's report of a subject matter of legitimate public interest, insomuch as it was action on the part of the people’s repre sentatives to affect the statws of the Corpora- tion of Washington. We hold that there is no justification whatever for secret action on the part of any such functionaries, to affect in any way their public trust. Apropos.—Alderman Moore, it is true, when the decision of the caucus to turn Mr. Middle- ton out was being consummated, went through the worse than idle ceremony of renominating him: thus endorsing his efficiency during his long service. In view of the fact that Mr. Middicton a few minutes before stated in the reach of his (Alderman M.’s) heariag, to Mr. Dunnington, that after what had occurred in the caucus he could not think of embarrassing those gentlemen who had then and there sus- iained him, by continuing a candidate, he must have regarded that gentleman’s renomination pemeamet = tt Actixe Secoxp Avuprtor.—Wm.
