EVENING STAR. | "#29070" n2ws avo cossrr SPIRIT OF THE MORNING PRESS The Coustitution treats upon thé?“ Consist- eney” of the Opposition; says, in reply to a misrepresentation of a Washington correspond- ent, that.Howell Cobb, of Houston, who sup- ported Hugh L. White for the Presidency in 1836, is not the present Secretary of the Treas- ury; and gives, with comment, a list of the persons composing the new British Cabinet. The Intelligencer defends, at length, the recent decision of Secretary Cass, to the effect that naturalization in this country would not exempt natives of France from military service in that country, in the caso of those who volun- tarily repair thither. Book Notices. From Messrs. Blanchard & Mohun, “The Art of Extempore Speaking,” hints for the pulpit, the Senate, and the bar; by M. Bantain, Vicar- General and Professor at the Sorbonne, &c., with additions by a member of the New York bar; Charles Scribner, New York, This book not only supplies a desideratwm in the literature of the lan- guage, but ministers toa need peculiarly existing under our representative system of government. It should be at the hand of every public speaker, both professional and political. From the same, ‘- Hours with My Pupil;” or, Educational Addresses, &c.,—the young lady’s guide, and parents and teachers assistant; by Mrs. Lincoln Phelps, late principal of Patapsco Insti- tute, Maryland, and author of ‘‘Lincoln’s Botany,”* &c.; Charles Scribner, New York. The object of this book is “to teach the principles of virtue and piety with the force of truth and the eloquence of Sincerity’’—to teach the women of our country that there is something more worthy of their im- mortal destiny than the study of modes of dress, and the etiquette of fashionable society, and to instill into their minds aspirations for a higher life. We have received from Messrs. ‘Taylor & Mau- ty, (who have the bock for sale.) ‘Ancient Min- eralogy,”’ or, an inquiry respecting primeval substances mentioned by the ancients, with ocea- sional remarks on the uses to which they were applied; by N. F. Meore, LL.D; Harper & Brother, New York. A book indispensable to the modern geologist and metalurgist, as well as inferesting to the general reader. Also, ftom the sume, ‘“The War of the Roses,” or stories of the struggle of York and Lancaster; by J. G. Edgar, author of “History for Boys,” &c; Harper & Brother, New York. A book which minutely traces, as this does, the thrilling incidents of the sanguinary struggle of the rival houses of York and Lancaster, from the plucking of the Roses inthe Temple Gardens, through a peried of thirty years, to the destruction of Rich- ard the Third, will of course be eagerly sought by the student of history, adult as well as juvenile i> The Patapsco€nterprise says that a Texas fever prevai's in Howard county, and names a number of citizens who are about selling out and removing to that State (The Wisconsin Patriot talks of “a queer case of seduction.” We had supposed that most cases of seduction were rather “queer,” and some of them funny. I> The North German Lioyd’s steamship New York sailed from New York on Saturday for Bremen, via Southampton, with 118 Passensers. Among the passengers is Dr. F. James, of Wash- ington city. 17 The steamboat John G. Layton exploded on Thursday last, about forty miles from Savan- nab, Ga. Master James Strobhard was killed, five white and five colored persons were missing, and several of the crew and Passengers severely injured ———_______ UP The *Newport (R. 1.) News says that the harbor of that city, so celebrated both for its ready accessibility at all times. and its security of anchor- age, is gradually filling up. The cause of this the News attributes to the wash of the streets through the sewers, and the throwing overboard of ashes and cinders from the vessels in port. > From the photographers and publishers, Messrs. Bryant & Smith, we have six Photographic (stereoscopic) views of scenes in and about Wash. ington, which, for excellence of execution, are quite equal to the best French stereoscopic views. ‘They cousist of representations of the Patent Ottice, Washington Monument, Jackson Statue, White House, Capitol extension, (east front,) and the Tomb of Washington. They are for sale by Frank- Un Philp. ——_—________ I~ The New York Herald of yesterday morn- ing contains the cards of Mr. H. Halsey and his attorney im reply to that of Mrs. Deane on the pre- vious day. They deny that he was absent from the funeral of his wife, as alleged by Mrs. Deane, and that his whereabouts is now unknown, asalso alleged by her. On the contrary, they state that Mr. Halsey can be seen at any time and place de- sired. They also express dissatisfaction with the want of thoroughness of the coroner's investi ga- tion. irene oe og U> A “National Singing Festival’ is now transpiring in Baltimore, under the auspices of the | Germans. On Monday, they had a march from the New Assembly Rooms, their headquarters, to the Front Street Theatre, the place of holding their exercises. Two military companies preceded the musical societies, and delegates from New York, Philadelphia, Alexandria, eorgetown, D. C., Harrisbary, Newark, N.J.. Richmond, Wast- ington, and Baltimore. Each Society displayed either 2 banner or flags, and the marshals Properly decorated, and the members carrying appropriate emblems, made an imposing appearance. Over one thousand men were in line, which extended about three fourths of a mile. Upou reaching Front street, the armed escort filed off and salnted the visitors 2s they entered the building. The xrand concert of the festival took place in the eve; | ning, at the theatre. It was considered rather un_ fortunate that a heavy rain should have com- menced falling just about the time the audience assembled. Nevertheless, the audience comprised, at least one thousand persons, a large portion of whom were ladies. At ° O'clock, the curtain arese, and the performance commenced by the Singing of a chorus, entitled the Singer's Prayer. ‘Phe whole of the programme was sung. under the direction of Professor Charles Lenschow, and the concert was regarded as one of the most Successfiil of the season. Today the convention have a | Slidell, of Louisiana, Tae Mission To Paris.—We place little confidence in the rumors that the Hon. John t.to succeed Judge Mason as the American to France, because knowing that he has repeatedly de- clined the position, which, it h@s been long understood, he could have had atany moment since the accession of the present Adiministra- tion. Mr. Slidell has at least éight years longer to serve in the Senate of the United States, a position which no gentleman has of late years given up to accept aught in the way of public employment save the Presidency or a Cabinet portfolio. We regret that Mr. Slidell has declined the President’s solicitations in this connection, because sincerely believing that of all American statesmen he is best fitted to protect the interests of the United States at Paris in the present juncture of European affairs. This opinion we know to be generally held by the public men of the country, all of whom are aware that he isa gentleman of great sagacity, experience, caution and nerve. and that he possesses precisely the attainments most required in an American Minister to France, in these partiemlar times. Inpian Arrains 1x Texas.—Sometime since the State of Texas ceded to the United States certain tracts of country for Indian purposcs, which were afterwards colonized by the Gen- eral Government as Indian Reserves. It seems that in consequence of the Camanche difficul- ties of that region, a general prejudice has been excited against all red men, and the quiet Indians inhabiting these reserves have often been aecused of committing depredations, which were wholly attributable to the ma- rauding Camanches. Notwithstanding the In- dian Office, in conjunction with its agents in that State, has exerted their utmost efforts to remove every possible cause for irritation, they have been unable to prevent a collision, as intelligence has been received at the Indian Office, from the Brazos agency that a serious skirmish had taken place on the 23d ult. = —— Removen.—The declension of Mr. Erasmus J. Middleton, yesterday, to be again a candi- date for the secretaryship of the Board of Alder- men, was a virtual removal—it being known that a caucus had determined to substitute an- other in his stead. Mr. Middleton held the position for twenty-eight years, in all which time no complaint had been made in any quar- ter against the manner in which he has dés. charged any of its duties. A more valuable servant or officer the public never had, as all in Washington know well. We entertain no fa- vor for the custom of frequently changing the incumbents in clerical offices. whether of the Na- tion, State. or City; and more especially do we deprevate the policy of removing such a secreta- ry as Mr. Middleton has been for twenty-eight years past, to the end of making a place for any one else. A certified list of 57,809.16 acres of land in the Newmansville district, approved to the State by the Seeretary of the Interior under the pro- visions of the Sth section of the act of 4th Sep- tember, 1441, has just been transmitted to the Governor of the State of Florida, by the acting Commissioner of the General Land Office. These lands are selected by the State in part satisfaction of the internal-improvement grant by Congress of 500,000 acres, under the act above mentioned, the proceeds from the sale of which land by the State go to make up the trust fund of the State for internal improve- ment purposes. bee eee a Mawr Laxps.—A copy of the original list of Miami reservations under the treaty of June, 1804, has been transmitted by communications of 11th June, 1859, by the acting Commissioner of the General Land Office to the register and receiver of the land office at Lecompton; and those officers have been notified that said list was approved by the Secretary of the Interior on the 16th of April, 1859, amd that from and after that date all the lands in the Miami ces- sion not embraced in said list become a part of the public domain, and consequently liable to settlement under the preémption laws. - Navat Orpers.—Surgeon Samuel Barring- ton has been ordered to the Naval Hospital, in place of Surgeon Pinckney detached and ordered to the San Jacinto.
