Piccolomin!, was arrested, on the writ of Mr. Hamley. proprietor of the Everett House, who made affidavit that the defendant was abont to leave the country without settling with him an account of board and lodging furnished to the Piccolomini at the Everett House, and that he had moneys in his possession more than suttictent to pay the indebtedness, but refused tudo so. it appears that the whole claim amounts to about $1200, for the board of seven persons for four weeks. The answer returned to #uch inquiries is, in substance, that the United States has no power nal Iaw—the common law of all nations—to compel a foreign government to respect, within its own limits, American read- ings of the rights of such naturalized Ameri- cans, the correctness of which is assented to by no other government than this. The American theory in this matter, it will be remembered, differs entirely from that of each and all the governments of Europe, which do not admit the right of expatriation without the consent of the government claiming the allegiance.
