This question may be worth snswering at present y one is looking wiih in- terest to the commercial stots of sum. A rise or fall in *Consols” is invariabl taken asa sign of commercial prosperity or ad- versity few have a very definite idea of what is meant by “Consols.” We find in the Boston ierald the following explanation of the term “Itis not expected that everybody should know what Consuls are. or if they do, that they beled tantly bear in wind what an im- ment they are in the affairs of Great itain propese to make a single expla- vp as to their importance, by remarking that a permanent fall of one per cent. involves a wes tv hollers of, in round numbers, thirty wiltiens of dollars The national debt of England began with the relinguisiment of the old custom of exturt- ing frow the people and substituting borrowing therefor to meet publ meies. Two matches were made on Tuesday evening, be- tween Flora and the mare Princess, both to wagons—one three miles and repeat, the other two miles and repeat. The time for these in- teresting contests has not been fixed upon, but is to be determined upon to-day. Princess was formerly owned in Chicago, where she was kept fur the purpose of breeding, and had two colts. She was subsequently sold and taken to California, where she was quite successful. Her original vame was Topsy. She has won a good deal of money on the track at New Orleans. In Anne Arundel county, some five or six miles from Baltimore, several farmers have large tracts under cultiva- tion—two have each over one hundred acres, and others nearly as much land. Some idea may be formed of the extent of trade when we state that on the largest fields, from two to three hundred persons are employed in picking fruit, the whole number enga, ed fae this purpose in the height of the scans batug some six or eight hundred men, women and children, whose aver- aze daily Inbor result in picking about sixty quarts each. The usual course of operations is t» have picked and packed in boxes as many ss the hand can gather before two o'clock, p.m. h day; for at that boura steamer of the he goes round to the wharf on the Anne Arundel side of the Patapsco river and takes in daily during the season a full load of boxes of strawberries fur immediate conveyance to Philadelphia. The operations of gathering for the boat having been finished the Banas fall actively to work fur the supply of the Baltimore market. How many thousand quarts are thus daily disposed of we exnnot say. The steamer is generally londed entirely with them. Those for Baltimore are sent to market both by land and ter. The season is now atits height, and after the present week they will rapidly decline.—Balt. American. Tecusicattttes.— Thompson’s ote Reporter thus defines some of the phrases used in stock circles and by news papers - A ‘vil is one who buys stocks on speculation, thinking they will rise, so that he can sell at a profit. It is to his interest to have stocks rise, and he will resort to every means to bring about the desired result. A bear is one who sells stocks on speculation, thinking they will fall, so that he can buy in for less money to fill his contracts. It is to his interest to break down the market, and he will resort to the most desperate means to accom- plish his object. : A corner is when the bears cannot buy or horrow the stock to deliver in fulfillment of th ireontracts. A deposit is earnest money, lodged in the bands of a third party as a guarantee; “3 up,” 10 up,”’ &e., isthe language expressive of a deposit. Overloaded is when the bullscannot take and pay for the stocks they have purehased. Short is when a person or party sells stocks when they have none and expect to buy or bor- row them in time to deliver. Lone is when » person or party has a plenti- ful supply of stocks. A flyer is to buy some stock with a view to tin few days, and either make or lose, k will have it. A wash is a pretended sale, by special agree- ment between the seller and buyer, for the pur- pose of getting a quotation reported. se -—_____ Suicnrty Ivprosaste.—The New York Ex- press tells this strange story of a rag picker: Having by long practice in Paris bceome ac- quainted with the sewers of that city, Leopold Heyer. a German by birth, came to New York. and conceived the brilliant project of exploring the metropolitan sewers for valuables.
