A Tale of the Present Time. rt Lewson was, to all appearance, a prosperous Loadon merchant and citizen, a theroughly shrewd and astonishingly active tnn of business—perfeetly just in his dealings, sononical. almost parsimonions in bis expen- . and of cold, rigid habits and manners— a matter-of-fact man of the world, in short, and Without a particle of what is called sentiment in his composition. A little more than twenty years previously he had arrived, a very young and almost peaniless man, in London, and ac- cepted a situation as warchouseman at a very low salary. in the establishment of Mr. James Kolges, merchant, of Friday street, Cheapside, and a methodical, hard pushing man. Lew- son's eager diligence ly recommended him te his sherp-sizh a eeaphowers and as he proved to be an excellent penman and aceount- ant. Le was svon transferred to the counting- house, and rapidly advanced both as to position and salary. Je was a powerful, gray-eyed, bright-complexiened young fellow when he en- tered ihe e whment, and the five sueceed- ing years searcely changed his personal ap- pearance. His step was as elastic, his spirit as jocund, his glance as merry, his laugh as glec- ful xs before. when 2 change, sudden as it was complete. passed over him; and this, too. at a moment when his fortunes Saas brighter, more pro ng than ever. The managiagelerk and eashier died suddenly; and Lewson, though seurcely five-and-twenty years of age, was im- mediately promoted to the vacant place. at a salary of two hundred and fifty pounds per an- num. I had, a few months before, entered the establishment as junior elerk. and I lodged in the house that he did. in King street—he oceu- pying the front, and I the back attic; and ie ring from the landlady that Mr. Lewson had spoken of leaving, and was, in fact. in search of a suituble house within easy distance of the city, L eoucluded that he was about to chan, his mode of life. My impression was that he had ieft some damsel amidst the sunny glades and leafy woods of his native Somersetshire. who. now that competency had been secured, would speedily appear to share the home he had with energy and thrift provided. I was, it seemed, mistaken. Ou the arrival of the post- letters, one moruing when Mr. Ridges was out, 1 took them, as was customary, to Mr. Lewson, who h»ppened, at that time. to be engaged in a distant partofthe premises. I had not re- turned te my desk more than five minutes, when & warelouseman came running to announce that Mr. Lewson had fallen down in a swoon. I and the other clerks immediately hastened to the spot, and there, sure enough, we found him ou the floor. ghastly pale, trewbling eonvul- sively. and purtially insensible. Indeed. I sometimes fancied that he was absolutely atraid of permitting his atten- tion to flag or be diverted to other thought Ps unflagging zeal and activity met with jest and natural reward. By the time Mr Lewson had attained the age of thirty. he was admitted a partner in the firm: and ultimately, when abundant wealth and inereasing years indisposed Mr. Ridges for further active exer- tion, that gentleman retired from the business, aud Me. A more lovely person cannot be imagined; she guides playfully the most re- doubtable courser. Beizebub, the name of Miss T.’s horse. ix so untameable and ferocious that no rider can mount him, no groom guide or stall him. He has already killed an Eng- lishman, named Thomas Dixon, who undertook to groom him in the stabie. Rarey was pow- erless to tamo this terrible animal. Three persons only can approach Belzebub. the first is Miss T. herself. To her Belzebub isus pliant, gentle and affectionate as a King-Charles iel. He obeys her word without ever exhibiting the least im- patience. Miss T. reeiproeates ail the atfec- tion which her beautiful horse exhibits, and loves him as a friond. The two other persons ean approach Belzebub, are two.young of sixteen and cighteen years, Jenny and Kitty Wilkinson. But Belzebub only sui- fers them. and shows them no attachment. Jenny and Kitty act as grooms to Belzebub; they feed and curry him, and waik him in the morning. Jenny, the youngest of these sisters, aslight-looking child, whose womanly figure is not yet developed, is dressed as a groom, and follows Miss T. every time Miss T. pays visits on horseback. for no other person can hold Belzebub by the bridle when his mistress dismounts. For the rest, Miss T. is » charm- ing young person; and has no need to ride Belzebub to be admired. She is a handsome girl of the happy age, of fresh. brilliant and healthful looks. She has much cleverness and great courage. This young lady. this American. who brings to her husband 8 dower 600,000 francs. will svon marry one of the most intelligent of the Freuch Generals.
