Sickle>. The misrepresentation of the Patriot in the matter is common, we regret to say, to the Opposition press generally, which have en- deavored to create the impression that the President interfered to prevent a stringent prosecution because the accused had been his personal friend, &c. Nothing could be more untruthful than such an aliegation. That fact will be evident to all who will refleet for an instant on the facts of the trial, than which no other American criminal trial was ever more vigorously prosecuted. The public will re- member that no other American criminal trial was ever conducted on the part of the defence with so heavy an expenditare, and so much outside pressure. So extraordinary were the exertions to clear the accused as that the vigor of the prosceution has been in a great measure overlooked by the country, in the concentra- tion of its observation on the exertions to clear Sickles. The fact that the prosecution was so Vigorous as it was, and that every means to conviet the accused that the Court would per- mit were exercised. will doubtless prove suf- ficieut to satisfy all reasoning people that this partisan charge against the Government is | > wholly untrue, as it surely is. ge “Frise Tres at ovr Hovse.”—The quiet People of Washington who refrain from being parties to such scenes as that described in the Star's report of last night's meeting in the Fourth Ward, will be not a little edified with reference to the tone of municipal pe prev- | alent in these times the country over, by its | perusal. lt exhibits a sort of daguerreotype | picture of the style of political action which | has thrown the municipal affairs of New York | into hands which notoriously plunder that city’s treasury to the extent of millions annunlly, and the affairs of Baltimore into hands whose | fellowship is such that the murderer, ineen- diary, and burglar—gentlemen of extensive rowdy political influence—are surest of tho protection of the suthorities.
