THE EVENING STAR. Ovraacs Urox a Youns Gint.—The New Vork News says: “A poor country girl named Mary Burke, was observed on Mondsy morning stand- ing npon the pier foot of Canal street, weeping bitterly, and on being questioned, stated that she wasan orphan from Princeton, N. J., and came to this city on Satnrday to find heraunt, who lives int Amity street. She said, further, that being un- able to find the residence of her aunt, she wan- dered about until dark, and was then accosted at the corner of Canal and West streets by a young man, to whom, in answer to bis queries, sic stated the above facts. He, with much apparent kind- ness, invited her to go home with him to the resi- ie oe een encrea| ing the night. She assented, and after walking with him a short distance, found herself near the pier foot of Canal street, and just as she began to fear that all was not right, he seized her by the waist and dragged her on board a steam tug named Pluto. Here he was joined by two others, and they forced her below deck, and there outraged her repeatedly during the night: In the morning she was put on the pier, and the captain of the steamboat Fairfield, on hearing her story, gave her breakfast and made known the facts to the police. The Pluto was visited, and Alexander G. Palmer and Benj. A. Smith were arrested and recognized by the girl as two of her assailants. Justice Kelly locked them up to await exarmina- tion. The name of the person who dragged her on board the boat is said to be Lee. He has not been arrested. {07 The Norfolk papers state that a number of Jersey farmers and others. who have been raising vegetables near New York city, have determined to sell out there and remove to the Old Dominion.
