SPIRIT OF THE MORNING PRESS. The Constitution says that the main hope of the Opposition for success isin the dissen- sions of the Democratic party, and that this fact should teach Democrats the importance of unity. The Constitution understands that the Brit- ish Government contemplates the establishment of aline of mail packets between Panama and Australia, and suggests the postal and commer- cial advantages that would accrue to our coun- try by our accepting an offer to convey the mails of the United States in case the proposed arrangement is carried into effect. The Intelligencer congratulates the country upon the evident revival of commereial and in- dustrial pursuits throughout the land. -- —— - THE WEEKLY STAR. *This valuable and popular family paper, full of metropolitan news and gossip, aud choiee literary reading, is now on our counter ready for delivery to the public. Embraced in its in- teresting contents are the following articles : A Complete Report of the Sickles Trial for the past week, embracing the opening speech for the de- Sence by Mr. Graham; the anonymous Letter which first bronght the affair toa cr timony of Mrs. Sickles’s dressing maid ond of Miss Ridgeley, a lady friend of the family: the celebrated Key Correspondence of March, 1358: the Confession of Mrs. Sickles; and many other intensely interesting features of the case which the Siar was the very first paper to publish; A Full Account of the quadruple execution at Bal- timore, and the funerals of the deceased; Lavender’s Wedding-Day, an “utterly improbable” and very interesting story; A Report of Hon. Edward Everett’s Lecture at Baltimore on the carly days of Franklin; Operations of the Patent Office; Department News: Eduorials; Washington News and Gossip; Local Intelligence, §¢.; Lats News, foreicn and domestic, by mail and telegraph; And a great variety of chcice literary articles, both prose and poetry, too numerous to mention. This is just the paper, above all others, for citizens and strangers sojourning in the Na- tional Metropolis to send te their friends at a distanee. Price only 3cents per copy, or $1.25 perannum. Postage prepaid by stamps when The Cheapest Paper in America! ! +0 : 7" The Baltimore American says that several barrels of green peas arrived there yesterday morn- ing from Norfolk. 7 Intelligence reached Fort Smith, Arkansas, on the 3st ult.. of the death of the famous Semi- nole Chief, Billy Bowlegs. Suspicion arc enter- ained that he was poisoned. IJ John Cockburn, of New Orleans, has broaght suit against the owners of the late steamer Princess, for damages to the amount of $50,000. for personal injuries received by the explosion of that boat. 7 The North China Herald states that a news- Peper published at Shanghai in Chinese by the missionaries, has attained a circulation of 700. ‘The people buy it week after week, paying cash, and each purchaser reads it aloud. U7" The New York News says that the new ar- rangements made by Mr. Holt, Postmaster-Gener- al, for the transmission of the Southern maii, is working admirably. It pow receives papers as far South as Baltimore, at 1 p. m., instead of 9 P- m., as before. i[7" The New York News complains or the iz- norance and brutality of the police in that city. For instance, a policeman comes across a drunken man asleep in the park, and without taking time to arouse him from his doublestupefaction at once commences the use of his clab, thus unnecessarily and inhumanly bruising his helpiess and bewild- ered victim. | —___ U7" Advices from Tampico to the Ist inst., state | that a revolution had broken out there and was | raging violently. The strife was so desperate | among the parties that passengers for that city | dared not go on shore, but weut to Havana. It is stated that the original intention of Miramon, in case he succeeded in taking Vera Cruz, was to | burnand sack the city, but he had been positively | assured by the allied naval forces in that harbor that nothing of the kiud would be allowed. LF The latest adviecs from Central America , state that Mons. Belly had received his second re- | inforcement of canal operatives, and was to have left for the interior. A dispute had arisen between him and the Nicaraguan government relative to a grant of land, which the Senate refused to ratify. The estimated cost of the canal is $50,000,000, which M. Belly states had been all subscribed Gen. Lamar was said to be on bis way to the Uni- ted States. The Nicaraguan government had of- fered to restore the steamers Cass-Irisarra and Catharine Maria to the agent of the Joe White | Company, who had refused to receive them. We have news from the Sandwich Islands | dated at Honoluin on the 18th of February. The Jate freahet in Nawanu Val'ey caused much dam- age. A party of excursionists had visited the vol cano at Mauna Loa, and one of them writes: The stream of lava was flowing at the rate of eight milesan hour, sweeping everything in its way. ‘The sides were fifteen feet in height, rising at an angle of ninety-five degrees ; the width was near- ly balfa mile, and came running on with a force irresistible. It was glowing ata red heat, while occasional openings would give an insight to the inner mass, heated to a fervent heat. ‘The British war ship Calypso sailed for the scene of destrac- tion, having the King and the English Consn! on board. The officers of the ship were provided With instruments for taking observations on the moantain, and if practicable would ascend to the ‘Crater. Se Te Tux “Ecno” Cas ix CuARLEsTON, & The eran — of the slaver ‘ Evho,” ar- raigned racy Iu being engaged in the Afri- can slave trade, was in it in the cme c= Frederick, M4... States Circuit Court, in ¢ on Tuesday | Hagerstown, Md. last, before Judze Wayne, of the Circuit Cour | Cumberland, Md. and Magrath, of the District Court > | Grafton, Va. South Carolina. The case was opened by James Conner, Us Distriet Attorney. In addressing the jury, he spoke of the gravity of the case before ther, and urg- ed them to dismiss from their minds everything like bias or prejudice. After having given a brief history of the capture of the Echo, he called their attention to the fact that the constitutionality of ‘the law, for whose violation the prisoners were the discussion of this ‘tragedy’? be- fore the public, inantici| 'y tion of the 1 inquir: now pending, and which, have ncancaly cone to harp upon it fora single day since it occurred, have no pains, and hesitated at no devices, in their attempts to create a Sa feeling of hatred and contempt igen Mr. Sickles, and a tender sort of Fourieristic compassion for Mr. Key in the public mind.’ This does the Star gross injustice. Its explanations and comments on the facts of the case have Trom first to last been direoted solely to the ond of exposing the falsehood of various publications from numerous pens de- signed to suporinduce a prejudgment of the ease ere it could be legally investigated—a prejudgment that, ifsuperinduced, would strike a fatal blow at the supremacy of ‘law in this District. It is aduty of the Star to labor to maintain the supremacy of law here, which it will continue to discharge in this case, as it discharged it in the cases of the killing of Keating, and again of Hume. Since the com. mencement of the trial, we have deemed it pro- per to publish little on the subject except daily reports of its progress, though perfectly aware that hundreds of false statements concerning the case are daily being sent to distant news- papers from this city to affect the result of the trial in fayor of the accused; statements caleu- lated to do this community infinite harm event- ually, as well as to bring into disrepute those of our fellow-citizens who domand the due en- forcement of law in this case as in all others. There has been no partizanship in the course of the Sivr on the case, except in favor of jus- tico, law, and the well-being of the District of Columbia ; and no clamor and misrepresenta- tion of journals that have persistently publish- ed untruths for the benefit of the prisoner, will serve to drive the Star from its sense of duty in this matter. We notice that more or less of those who hi been engaged from the date of the homicide up to this time, in melo-dramatizing the affair for the benefit of the killer, not unfrequently turn the vials of their wrath upon the Star, the highest compliment they could pay to the in- tegrity of its course and the efficiency of its defence of law and justice here. The extent of their hatred and vemon on this account is aptly illustrated by the budget of lies aimed at the Star by some hound who wrote the let- ter published in the New York Times of yes- terday, over the signature of ‘“ Scarabeus,”’ whose—tumble-bug—vomme de plume, aptly illustrates the dirty work in which he is en- gaged. heed Navan Orvers.—The following officers have been ordered to the sloop-of-war Constellation. fitting out at Boston as the fing-ship of Com- modore Inman, of the Afriean Squadron : Cap- tain, Stephen B.
