Re THE MYSTERIOUS WARNING; Or, the Lady in the Sacque. [coxciepeD.] d The apartment oceupied by Miss Boyd was situated at the back of the Hall. Beneath its windows was a gloomy copse, so wild and tan- gied that the meanest peasant bey would hardly venture within its precincts. Eugenie had a the old oak-panneled room because she loved the song of the forest bird, and the mur- mur of the wind and the trees. Mrs. Irving often said she thought Eugenie must be lonely at night, so far remote from any of the household, but Eugenie remained qu content until the appearance of that phantom of which so many had spoken. In thought she often lingered over the legends of Foresters® Hall It was said an ancestress of the Russell family had cherished a secret love for » gay and gallant knight. and that, when an infuri- ate rival became aware of her love for another, be poisoned her. and ever after her restless spirit roamed about the Hall visible to those whom danger threatened On ealm deliberation, Miss Boyd resolved not to mention tbe fright she had sustained, but wait and watch tho fature coming of her uabidden guest. She argued thus—it was prob- ably ene of the menials, who had, in ae ing amongst some ancient forgotten rubbish, lighted upon the dress. and so thought to prac- tiee on her credulity; and she felt ashamed of her rudeness to Everard, to whom she decided sending an apologetie note, and was about to reach forth her hand to take the pen, when behold, reflected within a large mirror, the form of the spectre appeared, standing close behind her chair. Quick as lightning Eugenie turned her head; no one was there—the shadow bad vanished. More than ever convinced the intruder must be some individual bent upon a frolic, Mi Boyd felt no terror; a sense of insulted digi upheld her; and she commenced a searching investigation to try whether there was not some private outlet. She shook every pannel, bat all were ¢ immovable; she next ex- ned a huge wardrobe, near which the figure had disappeared—it was evident a fixture, being fastened to the flooring by iron clasps. Perplexed and indignant, she rang for her maid, who stovd high in her confidence, fur she bad in various ways (ested her incorrup- ble fidelity. Afver detailing every particular of this inexplicable affair, Eugenie desired her attendant would for the future share the same room as herself. ~'Laws, miss,’ faltered out the damsel, and at the same time growing pale with fright, “I could not sleep here for the world! Why this is the room where the poor lady was murdered so many years agone. Yonder, too, just by that window, is the stain of her blood—it will never come out. I took care to cover it that it might not make you nervous. although I never supposed the ghust would trouble one so good. “Ghost, Martha '” said Euge You to repress such silly ideas; trickery ut work I am convinced. therefore I wish s companion ; as I'd choose to make a stranger « coniidante, I ask you to oblige— sey whether you will « “Tf you are not afraid ly, mis himself to the authorities without a word. His miserable mother, who it was afterwards shown had ed him to commit the fearful act, find- ing son taken, fled to the country, while Everard, not possessing sufficient courage to await the ordeal of a trial, strangled himself in prison. previous to which he penned a full account of bis guilt, de’ is seeing Alice is i to the Hall, ied whee in — dst of friendly chat, infusing a deadly poison in her wine. With his mother’s aid hs conveyed her corpse to the secret vault where they left it to moul- der le sw it would be discovered. After this foul and wicked deed they were un- able to endure the Hall; so giving out that they had sustained a sudden reverse of fortune, they retired to the seclusion of Ashdown Farm On the confession and death of Everard Rus- sell, Bo person would enter Forrester’s Hall, even at midday. All the domestics left, and Mrs. Irving found she could no longer continue in such an abode. To sell it wax an impossi- She therefore had it pulled down; nor is there now one stoue of Forrester’s Hall re- maining. Once more were his addresses renewed to the bright star of his soul, Eugenie; nor was he again pained by a repulae, und very soon the lovely Miss Boyd became the bride of him sho had long fondly regarded. ‘But the lady in the saoque!’’ exclaimed Lilias. with a most provoking quizzical air, as Mr. Montague concluded; *‘ was she never more seen ?”’ “ Not that [ ever hoard,”’ replied Mr. Mon- tague, Gravely, “yet although no ghost-seer myself, [ allow others to enjoy their own delu- sions. With Mrs. Harding [ am well acquaint- @ is. A woman very far from being super- stitious, but constantly asserts that she actually beheld the shadow, that she was wide awake, and consequently not dreaming." “This would make a pretty little subject for & novelist,” said Lilias, laughing merrily ; ‘Major, I am afraid you cannot relate a tale half so interesting ; I should like to see it in print *Well,”’ replied I, “with Mr. Montague’s sanction, I shall be happy to present this story to the public. Perhaps some oue may be found who can throw a light on the subject of appari- tions.”” THE GREAT twee - BILLIARD MATCH AT DETROIT. [From the New York Post, April 13.] As the game of billiards has become a fashion- able and highly respectable amusement, num- resi, beg this city alone many thousand votar- ies, who are more or less proficient in it, and us itis perhaps the most graceful and heathful of popular sports, combining a gentle and v: l exercise of the muscles with scientific and men- tal intrest, we think it worth while to report at length the particulars of the great match played last night at Detroit. ‘The rival players were Michael Phelan, of this city. and John Seereiter, of Detrvit. Phe- lan has long been the most skilful player in the country. and in all the matehes that be bas He is now en- liard tables in ’ said Martha, *-sure- Lought not to hold back; command my services a= you list. for L would go through fire and water in your cause.”’ During several months the faithful girl shared the eouch of her young mistress, without either being disturbed by the mysterious apparition. Engenie had long learned to consider the shade a mere chimera of an over-excited imagination, and won by her aunt’s persuasions, she had de- lighted Everard Russell by naming their bridal day. Time flew rapidly, and the eve of the wedding came. The elock had tolled forth the hour of mid- night, and all beneath the roof of Forrester’s Hall were fast locked in balmy sleep except Eagenie, who lay watching the fantastical fig- ures cast by the flickering fire upon the ceiling. A deep sigh arrested her attention. By her side stuod the ghostly phantom, beckoning with its thin white hand. Slowly, then, it crossed the room, pointing with its finger towards the an- tique, worm-caten wardrobe, which sign it re- — three times, and then faded from her right ee daybreak the trembling Miss Boyd arous- ed Martha. but their united effurts proved in- sufficient to remove the furniture. Panting and weary they relinquished their undertaking, and mature refleetion, Eugenie decided upen ealling the groom, Stephen, who was her d's avowed admirer, and taking him into their con- fidence. He soon appeared with the requi- site implements for removing the iron fas- tenings. but it required a vast amount of labor aud perseverance ere his task was aceomplished. When the wardrobe was displaced Stephen discovered one panel of the wainseot to be hollow. [He essayed various effuris to open it, and was about suggesting to break it dowr, when the quick eye of Eugenie detected the small knob carefully coneealed amid the carved foliage adorning herchamber. She turned it yvements of his invention, and most retired from the ficld usa profes- sional player. His great excellence in the game does not ¢ 80 much in the brilliancy of his shots, aithough he has made some of the most astonishing on record, asin the perfect coolness with which he plays. and in his ability to leave the balls, as it is termed .to leave them after one count in such a position as to secure another count for himself. or, when he cunnot count, to leave them in an awkward state for his adversary. This finesse is, of course, half the game; but the imperturbable confi- dence with which he continues his play, under all circumstances, adverse or propitious, is what gives him his superiority. Most players are thrown off their balance when continually un- successful, but Phelan plays always with equal jon and firmness. John Seerviter is a German, and though a young man, is already the most famous player of the West. He played a match lately with a celebrated player, in Detroit, and won. His runs or counts are often remarkable—bigher, we believe, than any Pholan has ever made. But itis doubtful whether Le has the steadiness of nerve which characterizes the other. The present match was made some weeks i fora purse 3. Atthe same time, outside bets, among the classes of people who allow themselves to engage in gambling, we have little doubt, to five times that amount, have been wagered. A special hall wus pre- ared in Detroit for the exhibition, aud several undred tickets issued, at five dollars each, for the admission of spectators. Ph:ian and Tiemann were the principal players. Before opening the game it was s ted by Mayor Terry, on behalf of Mr. Phelan. that the players did not intend to try what long runs they could mak hing of that kind, but that the exhibition was given, more to sat- isfy the women of Detroit that in the game it self there was nothing to affect the most fasti dious, but on the contrary, that it was a game fully as scientific as ch uiring an acco- rate knowledge of the angles of the table, deli eacy of touch, good gment as regards the lace to strike the balls, and the particular egree of furce by which theyehould be pro- pelled. The exercise was not only excellent for the mental, but also for the physical pow- ers. The audience were much pleased with the Tformance. On Monday night a little preliminary match was played by Dudiey Kavanagh of New York, and Michael Foley of Detroit, for $250 aside, one thousand points. The -hall was well filled by professional aud amateur players, who watched the game with intense inter Both players were in good condition, and handled their cues in a manner at graceful and scientific. After the game had been in progress about half an hour, Foley made a run ofeighty- seven points, while, up to that time, Kavanagh's greatest run was twenty-four. anagh made a run cf one huntred and soventy-seven. which is the greatest single run ever made in America in a public mateh. The greatest ran previously any four-ball ca- rom game, was that made by Seereiter in his mate! th Barney Chrystal. which was oue bandred and twenty. The cl e>rs that greeted the New Yorker at the completion of this un- precedented run were loud and long. Never- theless, he only won by eleven points. The great game, however, commenced last night at seven o'clock. Much doubt was ex- ressed as to the result. although Phelan’s riends felt such an entire trust in his endurance and skill, that they laid heavy wages at con- siderable odds. At the outset of the game, if we may judge by the or reports, Seere- iter appears to have had the advantige. He was ahy-nine points in the lead at the end of the first hour, and he held his place till they had reached the fourth hundred, when Phelan ahead one of his marvellous runs, itis eaid, 157.
