Sick of New York —Perhaps for the last quar- ter of acentury no event has cansed such a thrill of horror in this community as the terrible affsir that transpired yesterday afternoon, resulting in the death of Philip Barton Key at the hands of Daniel E. Sickles, of New York city. The en- rounter, which tock place about 2 p. m., om Place.(recently so named.) and resulted ve death of Mr. Key, who received three or more pistel-shote. From the prominence of the par. ties concerned, the greatest excitement was created by the affair. and the streets in the vicinity of the club honse. to whieh the body of deceased was trken. and of Mr. Sickles’s residence on the oppo- t> side of Lafayette Square. was instantly filled y turengs of people. REMOVAL OF THE BoDy. After the inquest was over, the friends of the deceased, about 9 o'clock. m., caused the body to be re ved to his own es S tween Third and Four-and-a-half streets. This morning. a post mortem exawination took place on the bedy by Drs. Coolidye of the United States Army and Robert Stone, which lasted hours. the result completely corroborating ts made by these gentlemen the Coroner yesterday. The deceased leaves four interesting children— Lizzie, Mary, James, and Alice—whose ages vary from four to twelve years. THE ARREST. Mr. Sickles was arrested at Judge Black's resi- | denee by Ofticer J. H. Snit. When the officer male known his business, Mr. Sickles requested to be taken to his residence on the west front of Lafayette Square for the purpose of obtaining some papers, ete. The officer permitted him to do so, accompanying bim to his own door, and when arrived there. Officer Suit fearing that some further violence was premeditated by his prisoner, ex- tracted of him a promise that he would do no vio- lence to any person in his house. He was then permitted to go to his wife's room te obtain the aperé which he desired to get possession of. In he meantime the greatest excitement vailed without. and a large crowd cf persons collected in front of Mr. Sickles’s house. Shortly afterward Capt. Goddard, accompanied by the Mayor, ar- rived at the house and entered. and in a few min- utes the officers with Mr. Sickles came out, en- tered hacks. the Mayor, Marshal Selden and Capt. Goddard accompanying Mr. Sickles in one car. riage. and Officer Suit and Mr. Butterworth fol- lowing in another, and passed down H street in the direction of the City Hall, a large crowd of men and boys following along the side pavements and shouting. Opposite St. “John’s Church Mr. Sickles put Ris head out of the carriage window and smilingly returned the salutation of a friend who stood on the corner, Mr. 8. apparently being perfectly self-possessed. AT THE JAIL. Among others who saw Mr. Sickles after riving at the jail was Deputy Marshal Phillips, who addressed him and regretted the circu! stances in which he was placed. Mr. that no one could regret the occurrence more than himself, but that after learning what he had Larned, the course which he had taken was the only one he could take, and that Mr. Key and himself could not both live in the same world. Capt. Goddard then had an examination of the case. The only evidence taken was that of Mayer Berret, who testified to the death of Mr. Ke Mr.-Butterworth. who stated that just before t shooting he inet Mr. Sickles on Pennsylvania aveune, a little east of the corner ef Lafayette Square, and nearly opposit the State Departinent; that he had a few words of conversation with Mr. Sickles, who left him as Mr. Key came down Madison Place towards the State te Rare, that they met at the corner of Lafayette Square, when Mr. Key extende Mr. Sickles, sayin, his hand to 1°?
