EVENING STAR. Strader Srony azout a Srinrrvaurst.—A year and a half ago a gentleman named Hume of standing from N Li County, N.Y., was boarding in Rob’ Street, in this city, and s Mr. Morrill and his wife from Newbu . Mass., were inmates of the game house. Massachusetts lady avers that the boarders in this house were much given to holding spiritual circles, and that she was in- daoced to si! per pag: a board, and, through the of Mr. Hume and others, became entranced. While in this state, she understood that she was developed as a writing medium, and alleges that when she awoke she wasin her bedroom, which was on the same floor as the yes where the circle was held, and that the -Yorkers had taken advantage her help- ‘Wéseriess to outrage ber person. Su uently a child was born, which husband refuses to acknowledge. The affdavit implicating the accused was taken in June last, but the arrest, for various reasons, was delayed until last week, when Detective Bennett was sent to Nanda for the accused. Justice Quackenbush, before whom he was taken on Friday last, held him to answer, and set down his examination for Mr. Hume asserts that he is not nor piritualist, and heean prove by most ample testimony that the charge is un- founded, and originated in the fancy of the ac- euser and his wife, who, he says, were vei enthusiastic on the subject of spiritualism. — 1. Y. Tribune. ——$ Ke Some Brooklyn preacvers are being se- vVerely castigated by the religious press. The Christian Intelligencer of last week bas the following: We understand that there is asmail crop of young Beechers growing up in Brook- ye, of the genusape. They wear turned over t collars, draw their hair back so as to show their ears, talk slang and fustian with great volubility of tongue and violence of ges- ture. Wehear there are no less than three pulpits in Brooklyn now supplied with young clerical prodigies, who out-Beecher-Boecher in his extravagances, and have litileof trong sense ext jenna ability. They remind us of what Dr. Romeyn once sai “When the Al- mighty made an ape, a respectable animal was produced; but when man makes an ape of him- self, he is only contemptible.” —<—______..... U™ The citizens of New Ocieaus are urging the erection of a police and fire-alarm telegraph. I} The Shoe and Leather Dealers of New York held their first annual dinner on iast ‘Thursday evening at the Metropolitan Hotel. i~ The Troy Times says that a mania for de- stroying criucline seems to prevail in that city at present. Within a short time, ladies have had their dresses completely ruined by vitriol thown upon them at the entrance to the theatre, and in the lobbies of some of the churches. ~ Edwerd Everett says: ‘For myself, fam no arisfocrat. I do not own a quadcuped iarger than a cat, and she an {udifferent mouser, vor any kind of vehicle, with the exception, possl- bly, of a wheel-barrow."? Common Exrerizyce.—Jobn Wesley sa When | was young I was sure of everything a few years, havi been mistaken a thousand was not half so sure of most things as I was before ; at present [am hardly sure of an thing but what God has revealed to man. i Mr. Jared Smith, of Williamstown,Obio, has just taken ont a patent for a cast iron watch dog, for stores, &c. The affair seems to be go! ten up on the watch principle, for you have o to wind up the tail of tue animal, to make him howl twice every second, all night. AnotHeR Gas Srory.—At a hotel in New York, recently, an oid gentleman came down stairs and inquired of the clerk whether he had any tallow candles. Being informed that be could be supplied with tallow dips, the old ge tleman said: ‘-Then I wish you'd give me some; I want something I can biow out, for I’ve beea blasting away at that cussed jigger in my room tilt P've no wind left.”” Thecierk, by spaemedic fort, Kept his countenance, and ordered up ‘a pound of dips to room No. —.’’ 17 A new illustrator of Shakespeare Las en- tered the field in the person of Lord Chief Jus- tice of the Queen’s Bench, Lord Campbell. Dur- ing & recent vacation in Scotland, he turned b attention again to our great dramatic poet; an reading over his plays consecutively, was struck by the vast numberof legal phrases and 2! lusio they contain, and by the extrems appropriatene: aad accuracy of thetr application, be; noting and remarking upon them, giving them such explanations and elucidations as his vast experience and knowledge of the law enabied him readily to furnish. Ae has since put them into more regular form and erder, and is Printing them in the shape of a familiar letter to Mr. Payne Collier. ARRIVALS AT THE HOTELS.
